We're newly relocated to the Pacific Northwest and decided to make this holiday about…read moreexperiences--not gifts. With our college kid home for three weeks, we searched for something fun and different and found Santiam Excursions in Lebanon, Oregon. We chose the Brunch Train and had an absolute blast. From the moment we arrived, the staff was genuinely warm and professional (even on the phone when we called with questions). That kind of thoughtful hospitality feels rare these days, and it set the tone immediately. We were seated in a vintage parlor car at an assigned table with sweet holiday décor, a table number, and a quick orientation from the team. There were also a couple of simple activity sheets at the table--an easy, surprisingly fun way to get us talking and laughing together. The 2.5-hour ride was scenic, mellow, and wonderfully unique, with vintage holiday music in the background. The owner even visited every table to check in--an old-school personal touch that made the experience feel extra special. We'll definitely be back to try their other excursions (especially the Portland/Columbia River options). Helpful hints for first-timers (based on our experience) ...GPS may take you to the wrong side of the tracks. We couldn't cross because the train was blocking access, so we had to drive several blocks to cross over and double back. ...No confirmation email with arrival tips. It would be helpful if they emailed GPS/parking guidance, but don't stress--parking is plentiful near the tracks and station. ...The office opens 30 minutes before departure. When doors open, it's a bit of a rush and not very organized. ...Seating seems to vary by group size. Larger groups (especially with kids) may be placed in a charming car with folding tables/chairs. Smaller adult groups seemed more likely to be seated in the quieter parlor-style cars. ...Bar service comes to you first. After you're seated, a staff member offers drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) before dismissing tables to the buffet. My Bloody Mary was great; my daughter loved her holiday mocktail. Beverages are additional to buffet/train ticket price and staff have mobile devices for your bar tabs (and tips) ...The buffet is a walk through multiple cars. Food is simple--eggs, sausage, pancakes, and basics. More "breakfast" than "brunch," but served hot and the catering staff was friendly. ...Explore the train. You can wander through the cars, including an outdoor car (brisk and fabulous). The bar car was crowded and very warm, so we skipped it, but plenty of guests loved it. A lovely final touch: after breakfast was cleared, staff invited everyone for complimentary hot chocolate back in the meal car. If you're looking for a meaningful, memorable way to connect with the people you love--this is worth it. Highly recommended, and we're rooting for their continued success.

The train ride itself wasn't very scenic, but that is beyond the control of the train management. Seating was very limited for the amount of tickets sold. Fortunately, we brought our own folding chairs and just set them up on the train. Otherwise, we would have ended up sitting on very uncomfortable cheap folding chairs in a boxy metal old cattle car with no windows. For something out of the ordinary to do, I would recommend this train ride. Just bring your own folding chairs.

I needed a brief overnight stay while in Lebanon a couple months ago. My primary interest was to…read morehave a place to lay my head for a few hours as I would be arriving very late and leaving very early the next morning. I decided to call the Shanico Inn because I wanted something inexpensive since I wasn't going to be spending a lot of time in my room and didn't want to pay for a fancier place I wasn't going to be in for long. I called and made my reservation over the phone. The gentleman who answered was polite and answered my questions. I saw the pricing for this place on a couple third party sites and without asking about it, he said the room rates were the same as those sites (so skip the 3rd party sites -- you won't need them to get a better price). I anticipated arriving around 10:30pm or 11pm and was worried someone wouldn't be around to help me get my keys, but he explained the plan and it worked just fine. As it turned out, I arrived around 9pm instead, got my key, and headed to my room on the bottom floor. There is a sign outside that talks about a Jacuzzi tub of some kind. There is a sign inside (where you check in) that states that there is only ONE room with such a tub, so be aware of that. I got to my room and it is fairly spacious. There is a couch and coffee table and the bed is next to that. It has a bathroom that has been remodeled somewhat recently. The overall feel of the room is that it is old. It looks old, anyway, despite the flat screen TV. The colors and the light bulbs give off a very old school vibe, too. That isn't really bad per se, but it would have to be massively modernized and repainted and have new bedding/sheets if they wanted to bring it to the 21st century. Believe other reviewers about the pillows: you only get two. So bring your own. I didn't ask for more, but that's all there is in the room when you go in. From what I could see, the AC worked (I tried it), the fan in the bathroom was a little sketchy, but worked, and everything in the room worked just fine. The bed is really springy. I didn't flop down on it, but if I would have, I would have bounced. It is a little weird to sleep on. If I had brought more of my own pillows (I forgot), it would have been a little easier. Checkout required me to leave my keys in my room and I left with no troubles. For $75, it wasn't too bad. Overall, the front desk is pleasant and helpful. The rooms look old, but everything works in there just fine. The rooms are spacious and clean. My bathroom area was remodeled recently and I think they weren't quite finished with the fan/lighting in the bathroom, but it worked all right as well. The bed wasn't my favorite and I should have brought more pillows. For $75, I'm certainly not going to complain. I got my mission accomplished of a quick rest and was back on the road the next morning. If I had something like this come up again, I would stay at the Shanico Inn again, absolutely.
