The spice levels were adequately low for the majority of Americans it really wasn't overly spiced or hot..., however the combination of spices didn't agree with my digestion and I'm still suffering with the fallout of that even the day after. Maybe I will go back to this restaurant .. maybe not ... There are "safer" dishes to order on the menu with less strong spice.... So there are options I just happened to order the wrong ones. After about 30 minutes of it remaining empty I decided I wasn't interested any more. I went up to the bar to tell the waitress that I wasn't going to wait any longer to please not charge me (I hadn't eaten any thing yet). Instead of standing still she walked all the way across the room (while I was talking to her) and I had to follow her. I was given the rude reply of "Uhhhhhhhhhh...ok" followed by a nasty look. I ate here about 2 years ago when it was called "The Bay leaf" and it was amazing then. It's apparently gotten alot worse.

I'm giving it 5 stars because it's one of the first authentic restaurants around the Villages area…read morethat you would also find outside the bubble. I went for the lunch buffet which had 4 vegetarian options, 4 non vegetarian options, an appetizer, rice, naan and a dessert. It's the perfect way to try their sauces, which do not disappoint. I might agree with the other reviewer about the buffet price. It's a little high at $17.98 to come more often than not and could use some more offerings at that price - like Raita, tamarind sauce, etc. The regular menu is extensive and there's plenty of seating both inside and outside. It's at the left end of the shopping plaza and has a lovely outside seating area which I wasn't expecting. The entrance is also welcoming with fishtail palms swaying in the wind. I wish them much success. It's a winner in my book! Maybe this is the start of more interesting restaurants opening here aside from the horrid Suleiman and FMK monopolies found inside of the bubble.

Update 10 September 2026: This was our second visit to the…read moreBombay Bistro. The restaurant has made considerable changes and improvements since our first visit last year. Serving plates are of permanent material and metallic eating utensils are provided. It was a warm day, but the atmosphere inside was cool and fresh. There was one person receiving and serving customers; he was most friendly and helpful (we were surprised when he mentioned it was nice to see us again; I guess he remembered our visit from last year). Shortly after we were seated, the server brought out a basket of freshly prepared naan-bread. Our previous visit we ordered from the buffet, this time we ordered off the menu. From the menu we ordered a Mango Lassi, hot tea, Aloo Paratha, Chicken Tikka, Goat Curry, a House Green Salad, Raita, and Mango Chutney. (We observed on the way into the restaurant that the buffet service area has been relocated up to the front of the restaurant and it offered more choices than it did on our previous visit). The waiter did caution the table that the Chicken Tikka (from the Tandoori section of the menu) might be dry for our tastes, and he recommended a version with a sauce; we went against his advice and ordered the un-sauced Chicken Tikka. We also chose spice level 4 of 5 for the Goat Curry. I wanted to be able to recreate previously enjoyable goat curry meals (that I had experienced in a restaurant in Maryland), so I needed the lettuce, tomato, and cucumbers that come on the House Green Salad. Well, the server was correct: we should have ordered the sauced version of the Chicken Tikka (rather than Chicken Tikka from the Tandoori section of the menu) - we felt the chicken we received was low on flavor and highly dried out. OK, live and learn, next time we listen to advice :). I thought the goat curry was ideal, nice and spicy by not too spicy - it combined well with the Basmati rice and salad components plus the Raita. The sauce in which the goat was cooked was superlative. I guess our only other dissatisfaction, aside from our unwise choice of going against server's advice, was with the Aloo Paratha (potato stuffed bread); it seemed damp on one side and we felt is seemed more like it was fried instead of cooked in a Tandoor. The Goat curry was very good, maybe even too good in quality - only one bone in the entire dish (I was accustomed to sucking meat off from half a dozen or more bone pieces when I ate this dish in Maryland; this seemed too easy!). The Basmati rice was ideal. Had my first Chai tea: it was surprisingly good ( I had ignorantly been expecting plain black tea from a teabag, this was an entire creation!) Overall our impression was the restaurant is good, we received way too much to eat for two people, but eating at the Bombay Bistro is an experience we are eager to repeat.

Parking in the nearby free…read moregarage was perfect timing since many workers and patients of the nearby UF medical center had already left for the day. Only one other couple was dining in, and there were a lot of take out orders being picked up. The place was well-lit, clean, and had ample space. We were greeted and seated almost immediately. Scout was our waitress and Deepak was the host. Menu has all the Indian cuisine staples that we expected - we ordered 3 orders of garlic naan, fried rice with veggies and egg, chicken tikka masala, aloo gobi (potato & cauliflower side dish ) - all with medium spiciness - with mango lassi and masala Chai tea for drinks. While waiting for our orders, we washed our hands and the single-occupancy restrooms were clean and stocked. The only downside to the facilities in general are the slightly hard chairs / benches as these were possibly made with the intention of not spending too much time in the restaurant or for people with more natural padding in that area . The naan arrived about 10 minutes later, followed by the rest of the food. The naan was excellent - just the way we like it (not too soft, not too crunchy, with enough garlic oil for taste). The basmati rice was cooked just right in the individual bowls and also in the generous portion of the fried rice. It was my first time trying the aloo gobi, and I loved it! I never knew about this dish, and my husband said it was a must try. I also tasted his chicken tikka masala, and it was also made deliciously. The drinks were also great - mango lassi was fresh and not too sweet. Masala Chai tea was exactly how I imagined it would be. Overall, we spent around 1 hour and about $100 on our date here, including generous tip. We are glad to be repeat customers to try more dishes, and of course, enjoy more garlic naan .

It was highly recommended to me by a lot of my Gainesville friends, so I finally went to compare it with Indian Cuisine, Amrit Palace, and Indian Aroma. I can confidently say it's either slightly better, or on par, with Indian Aroma, and significantly better than Amrit/Cuisine. Only slightly better because the array of food you can get here is larger and a bit cheaper, but I do think Indian Aroma's butter chicken is still the best I've ever had. I got the varutharacha chicken curry combo, and it felt like an absolute steal for the amount of food and the price. My entire friend group went non-verbal as we chowed down into our dosas and food, and while I've never had varutharacha curry before, the flavor and savoriness blew my mind. The samosa was thick, crunchy, and filled with delicious veggie interior, and the chicken was soft, juicy, and slid right off the bone. The dosas were crisp, and paired excellently with their sauces. We ripped, we shredded, we came, we conquered, we devoured. The food coma after eating everything was so, so worth it. Service was great, and we were kindly greeted by two workers at the front who got us drinks fast and took our orders as soon as we were ready. They were very friendly, and as the front desk is semi-facing the restaurant, we could catch either of their eye whenever we wanted or needed something and they'd come right over. Overall, love this place, and will be back to try so much more.
