Love this place. We refer to it as the Ortega Family Restaurant. We've eaten here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We've never had an experience that was disappointing. From the burritos, tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas, tortas and the salsa bar you can't go wrong. Delicious margaritas, bottled and tap beers, and great happy hour specials. October 22, 2014 My Wife and l went to Amigos and ordered the Carnitas dinner, Carne Asada dinner and Margaritas. We were very happy with our meals the Carnitas and Carne Asada was very flavorful. Ok only been once (usually go Fiesta Time to satisfy need for Mex), and the fajitas were pretty good - not anything super special - but their service was as good as can be at a cheapish sit down place like this. Had come in right as they were closing (some online source had misrepresented their hours), and was seated cheerfully. This has been my go to restaurant for Mexican food since I moved to Maui three years ago. It's not the best Mexican food I've ever had, but it's comfort food for me. I got there a few minutes before 6pm which is when happy hour ends. It took the server almost 5 minutes to get to me so it was 6:02 when she approached my table. When I asked her about happy hour she told me that I missed it. I let it go but it should have been honored. It was The day after the political presidential elections and they had a basketball game on the smaller screen and news on the larger screen. I checked in nature that nobody was watching so I asked him to put basketball on the main channel. There was no sound on the television and the two guys at the bar were deep in their own conversation. The bus boy told me that the bartender would change it when she had time. She was on her phone and standing around so there was plenty of time. She had no intention of changing the channel which she could have said because I would've left. After I realized she wasn't going to change the channel I wanted to leave but the server got my order wrong and I had to wait another 20 minutes to get my order of tacos. I was there for over an hour for a plate of tacos and one beer. For what it's worth my server was incredibly sweet and wasn't aware that I had even asked for the channel to be changed. I needed a break from the news and in a Mexican restaurant was the last place I thought it would be shoved down my throat. I'm sad to say they've lost a customer because of this. read more

While in town, it is not easy to find a sit down restaurant and also serves food fast and decent for meetings. So Amigo's is a always a good choice for me. The food is decent for it's price. My favorite Mexican food on Maui by far. We dine here all the time! My favorite meal is the steak and cheese chimichanga. My boyfriend swears by their tacos and enchiladas. It has a small dining area that sometimes gets really hot during the day (no AC.) but if you order an ice cold beer or margarita with your meal, you won't even notice. The service is quick and friendly and they have a kamaaina discount. Not to mention their all day specials which totally rock, like Monday's $2.00 tacos. read more

I wish the rankings were broken down by topic. Food and service really should be separate. I've been to this Amigo's for years, and so my opinions are the result of many observations. Pros: - Good location near many other places people need to go. - The food is pretty good given Maui's handicap in this area. For food quality alone, I would give this place a 3.5 - 4 (this is a Maui scale, if this place was in Los Angeles, it would be out of business sadly). Cons: - I've watched the owner be rude to just too many people. It does not offset his good times. My best guess is he is either bipolar, or has massive mood swings. In general he is always good with me. But it just kept happening, and finally he was really rude to someone I was dining with, in a group of 6 of us, and I had to say that was it, I won't be coming back. Quick back of the napkin math shows he will lose between $1-2K per year of my business. And I can no longer suggest the place to any of my friends. - This previous point spills onto the wait staff. Most of the staff really are trying to do a good job, but again, a half dozen or so times I have watched them give just horrible service to people. And, again, in general it has not been directed at me, but I watch some pretty pissed off people, and for good reason. I suspect the owner/manager sets the mood, and this is the result. I hope he gets some personal help, or hands the place over to a well suited manager. Or, perhaps his location provides him enough business and he doesn't care. Hard to tell. read more

Delicious Mexican food. There is a lot parking. The restaurant is clean and spacious. They have a self-serve salsa bar which we enjoyed. They have daily specials too. Our waitress was warm, friendly and very attentive. The only thing that is missing is a restroom inside the restaurant. You must use a key and walk outside in the strip mall if needed. Have eaten here a few times in the month of January 2016. Mind you, I drive down from Upcountry to have food here if I'm not in town for errands. Limited Mexican food options on the mountain. What this should say - Meh. I've experienced better SERVICE. Wait staff sorely lacking in training to refill drinks and check on whether the food is ok. This is at both lunch and dinner meals. They *never* tell you where the salsa bar is, unless you are seated on the side of the adjacent strip mall units where the thing lives. The Kihei location does not have room for a salsa bar, so they bring you salsa with your chips. My tips reflect their lack of follow-up. Food is better better spiced than the location in Kihei, where I ate many times last year. Guacamole is much better in Kahului. Sign above salsa bar says that there's a 50 cent surcharge for To Go food. Seems to be very popular with the Spanish-speaking residents of Maui and most of the servers are bi-lingual. Advice - be a nice yet demanding client. Avoid the chips as my Hispanic friend thinks they're foul. M-F there are specials served at Lunch and Dinner and are worth choosing them for the $ discount. read more

I went to Amigos today for the very first time, our host was very friendly and welcoming. When we got to our table our waitress that was assigned to us didn't have a very welcoming personality. I didn't catch her name but she did have a ponytail about middle age and she was wearing an outfit that did showed her stomach. First she asked us what drinks we wanted told her and she came back with it with chips and dip. When my son asked for a refill she seemed irritated that we asked and spilled water while refilling my son's cup and mind you she didn't even apologize. So we got done with our chips but still had alot of dip left and she never offered us any more chips. When another worker came to bring the first of our food he offered more chips and we said no.. as I was Cleaning up the table ready to pay for our food she stood there and watched as I was filling up the tip part...I felt so embarrassed so I just tipped her ( I wasn't planning on tipping her) I work in a tip industry and I go over and beyond for my tip and I felt Like our waitress kinda looked down on us because we were locals. Oh and as I left she didn't even say thank you. She was the worst waitress I've ever had and tbh she's in the wrong line of work. Everyone else were nice and that's why I gave the 3 stars but if it was just her she wouldn't be getting zip!!! read more

The food remains more or less the same--some of the best Mexican grinds you can get on Maui--but the smallness of this venue and the loud music that's played always gives me a mean headache. Absolutely terrible service. Walked in, a server looked at us, didn't greet us and proceeded to finishing wiping a table and push in chairs. Wasn't busy at all for a Friday night. We sat ourselves and waited about 5 minutes, we went on our phones to look for another restaurant because no one greeted us. Finally a different server comes to our table and gives us menus. So then we decided to give it a chance. She asks for our drink orders and comes back with our drinks and chips. No salsa. We thought it was odd to not get salsa with the chips. We ordered and got our food. Food was good and came out quickly. As we were eating we noticed another couple walk in and immediately get seated, menus and chips with a variety of salsas! I had only an hour and a half to meet up with my Cousin who lives on Maui for the last 29 years. We opted for his fave hangout. Boy were we in for a treat. the Carne Asada tostadas were terrific along with the beans and rice. Cold Dos Equis amber from the tap along with a really tasty salsa bar.
