The organization is abysmal. The owner is self righteous and opinionated. (And not in a good way.) The garbage he passes off as retail goods are of a generally poor quality, and marked up past new prices. (Even for things as simple as a USB cord.) I walked past this shop several times, and finally went in one day. Bob, the owner, is a gentle spirit and made me feel welcome. He showed me some typewriters and I became interested. I enjoy the writing process on a typewriter. I can think while i type with no distractions, no electricity, no hum of a computer fan; when I stop, there's no rebooting or memory storage issues...its all there, just where i left off. Once I have a short story typed out, I simply read it in to Dragon Naturally Speaking and now it's on my computer, ready for editing. Bob spent over two hours helping me try different models, and in the end, I paid cash (no credit cards accepted) for a vintage Royal. I love it. Bob gave me a receipt and a ninety day warranty. Typewriters are bombproof, but since they're old, they need to be set up like a violin. I'd never buy one from eBay for that reason. That's why I tried mine before buying. I think that the customer service at Amherst Typewriter & Computer is great. They have been around in the area for sometime and their prices are fair. Seems as though Eric (below my post) was speaking about David K.'s post. David's post felt seemed a little misleading (or maybe all of the story isn't there for the reader to arrive at their own discerning thoughts/opinions w/o being swayed) Nevertheless, I've been at this shop a couple of times and I'd continue to buy from + bring my desktop/computer to these guys' shop any day. read more

About five months ago I purchased a groovy, blue typewriter from this shop. An aspiring writer and vintage enthusiast, this place was my heaven. The owner was delightful and purely magical, his love for the engineering behind the machines he sells was inspiring. Most gadgets he takes in are broken and unusable, he then transforms them into working memorabilia of the past to be used by people like myself. I would not argue with the no photo taking rule of his. Hey - his business and passion. There is no disagreeing there. I completely recommend even just stopping in to chat with the man. Total scam artists. I went into Amherst typewriter to have a sentimental old typewriter refurbished for a friend. I paid the $39 diagnostic fee and was told I would be called with an estimate. After a month, I hadn't heard anything and called to inquire. I was told that my typewriter had been lost, and that I would be called within a couple of days. After nearly a week, during which I called daily, I was told that my typewriter had been found and was given an estimate of $600 for complete refurbishment, of which $400 would be required as a deposit. After some thought, I called and told the proprietor that I would be in the following day to pick up my machine. The following day, I called again to be sure that my typewriter was accessible. I was assured it was and made the considerable drive to Amherst to pick it up. I produced a receipt, and the woman pointed to a typewriter that was not anything like mine. She accused me of having had someone else go and pick it up despite my having the receipt. I insisted upon looking around the store, which she begrudgingly permitted. I located my typewriter buried under several other typewriters. She backpedaled a bit, saying that she hadn't accused me of doing anything, and that she had had past experiences with dishonest customers. Since my typewriter was still lost when I arrived to pick it up, I can only suppose that the $600 estimate was a fabrication. I was not refunded the $39 diagnostic fee . On bringing that typewriter into another repair shop, I was quoted an estimate of less than $100 for complete overhaul. read more

I was directed to Amherst Typewriter while walking through Amherst looking for a jewelry store to fix my watch--it had been dead in a drawer for over a year. In a quick 10mins. I got the watch battery replaced for $12. The next day, I urgently needed a new Macbook power cord, and they had that too! I might have saved a few dollars by driving to Walmart...but who actually wants to drive to Walmart?? I'm much happier leaving my money with small, main street businesses. Especially ones as interesting as this one. It's worth stopping in! read more

I had a positive interaction with the man working here, whom I presume is the owner. He was friendly and helpful. And I have to give him credit for his salesmanship. And I have to admit to being stupid enough to pay $150 (cash) for a 20 year-old Royal typewriter I could easily have found elsewhere wicked cheap -- like ebay or freecycle. I wanted to support a local business, but didn't intend to give them so much support. Their prices are embarrassingly inflated. The typewriter I purchased is fine, except that I feel duped every time I look at it. I can't recommend this shop. My daughter is 11 yoa. and wants to be a writer. She wanted to experiment what it is like to work on a typewriter. So she took her savings and went to Amherst Typewriter & Computer. She had $54 but the junk she wanted to buy was $150. The owner convinced her to make a down payment with the promise that if she changed her mind they would give her a full refund (we're talking about an 11 year-old here). She changed her mind after I showed her that the same junk is given almost for free on e-bay. So she went to this store and asked for a a full refund. To her surprise, they told her that they wouldn't give her the money back , but a "store credit"...in other words, they took advantage of a child and robbed her off her savings...but it's alright...you can stick the money up your black arses...I hope the $52 that you stole from my child make you wealthier and more prosperous... read more

Abysmally BAD! Brought a typewriter in for repairs. They charged as much as an entire restoration for a cleaning and a few adjustments. When I got it back it still didn't work right. I brought it back in, and every few months I was given a different excuse why it wasn't repaired. Most of the times they couldn't even find it. I had to find it for them, and my contact info was no longer attached. After YEARS of waiting, I finally demanded it back, they had no idea where it was. I found it under a PILE of junk, and they had taken parts off of my family heirloom. When they offered further promises and excuses, I grabbed it and ran. read more

The shop has a large variety of typewriters, mostly manual, as well as an eclectic and often-vintage computer selection. Too bad the prices are outrageous. They want $300 for a standard manual typewriter, twenty dollars for a decade-old rubber-dome keyboard, at least a hundred for a broken Selectric no different than the ones UMass pitches once a week, and forty dollars for a broken laptop from the early 90's. Other people seem to agree, too, as much of the back-area inventory looks dusty. I wondered how the place stayed in business, but then a good friend told me an interesting story. She say she went into the shop, and the proprietor offered to give her a substantial break on the price of a typewriter if she paid in cash. Sorry, but you shouldn't have to haggle in high-street retail, and our suspicion was that he did this as a way to under-report sales for income tax reasons. I hope that's not the case, but it was very shady, and I can't reccomend this place for anything, as there's many other computer repair and sales locations in the valley. For typewriter supplies, believe it or not, Staples or Officemax have the more common ribbon varieties in stock, so even that's not a reason to go here. read more

the person who wrote the review above does not understand the usage of credit cards. if a person buys something with a credit card the business owner has to pay a fee to the credit card company, a certain percentage of the total sale, and that is why he offered the discount. and if Umass is chucking them out go get one of theirs, also you cannot understand the value of the typewriters that were 300 dollars because you probably didn't ask him the story behind it, i'm sure it's rare (he deals with collectors). the person above is an idiot. read more
