I called last week to schedule an appointment for an oil change on my 2018 Ram 3500. The guy that answered the phone quoted $65-125 for an oil change on my diesel truck so I booked an appointment for today. I knew $65 wasn't accurate but $125 was reasonable seeing that Ram charges $130 but couldn't get me in for 3 weeks. I went to the appointment this morning & the guy checking me in told me that it would be $245 for the oil change. I'm not sure what there labor rate is but I've never heard of a $245 oil change. On my way home I stopped at the Marathon gas station next to Ford & they did the oil change in under 10 minutes for $99. They were super nice & did a great job. Obviously you couldn't pay me to go back to America's Auto & Tire ever again! read more

The shop has worked on 2 of my vehicles & also my mom's now. Vehicle #1: Took it in for an estimate and asked for a call to go over repairs needed before I got any work done on the older vehicle. No estimate sent. No phone call. I had to call them to ask about my estimate, and they had already done over $500 in work on the truck, without my approval. And had ordered parts for another fix. Also without my approval. I had to call again to ask for an estimate to be sent. In the estimate it clearly stated to "CHECK & ADVISE WHAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE TO FIX". Since they had it 1/2 done & parts on order I kept it there to finish so I could get my truck back, but expressed my dissatisfaction with lack of communication & them doing such costly work w/o my approval. No recourse offered. No discount offered. No genuine apology. Vehicle #2: Brought in for a backfiring/loss of power issue. Truck has an after model engine fan that has to be turned on/off manually. I went over it w/intake guy. Asked for that to be added to notes. I repeated how important it was to turn on so it won't overheat & turn off so it won't drain battery. I followed a diff tech out and physically showed him the switch. They were all annoyed w/me being so thorough & brushed off my desires to make it clear. When I had to AGAIN CALL MYSELF to see if truck #2 was ready, admin said they fixed the backfiring issue but the truck was overheating so they kept it. They did not turn on the fan as I over-instructed to do & taxed my engine w/an overheat. BTW, the truck still backfires & loses power. Vehicle #3: Mom has spent over $2500 on her car fixes there, they caused a new problem that had to be fixed, and immediately on the drive home, her car that has NEVER had issues w/temp regulation overheated & blew a hose. Suffice to say no family vehicles will ever go to this shop again. read more

I wouldn't trust these people at all - they seem nice but we're going to completely rip me off so I didn't end up working with them. my axel seal needed replacing (the part is $3.99) and they were going to replace my brakes and a bunch of other uncessary parts for $600. thank god I got another opinion and got my van fixed without emptying my bank account. BEWARE - I believe they were trying to take advantage of a young single female from out of town by trying to replace things that did t need replacing. they were nice to my face but ultimately don't seem like an honest, good business. read more

I had a brief but exceptional experience with America's Auto & Tire. Our engine light had come on and we were only in town for a couple of days. We called around a few places and they were backed up for days or weeks. When we called America's, they were also backed up, but offered to check the codes to see what the issue was. They quickly accomplished that, told us that it wasn't an issue, reset it, and didn't charge anything. (I would've paid a lot of money just for the peace of mind!) I had an awesome experience getting my SUBARU OUTBACK SERVICED. I am fairly new to Pagosa Springs and this place has become my new go to shop. Worth driving an hour when you find a mechanic you like. The three things I look for in a mechanic that I didn't find with other auto shops in Pagosa. 1. Customer Service: They were friendly and professional. I have a pregnant wife and we have to be extra careful with Covid. They kept masks on while we were in the waiting room and we observed the mechanic use a lysol wipe on our car. Finally, our doctor had a women start to go into labor and asked if we could come in earlier creating a dilemma for us. My wife graciously got offered a ride to the hospital by an employee! 2. Knowledgeable Mechanic: When a mechanic will take you back in the shop and show you what is wrong, as well as, take the time to explain things it goes a long way. Can't express this one enough. I had mechanics in Pagosa tell me I needed new bearings on both sides and what they didn't know was I already had replaced one side. They didn't really diagnose the problem, they guessed. That's why I called these guys to get a second opinion. Their mechanic showed me why my bearings were good and what the real problem was. Which actually corrected the problem. 3. Cost: I always get a second opinion when it comes to cost. I want to pay fair wages and not get taken to the cleaner. These guys sourced the best price on parts and with labor came in cheaper then two other shops in Pagosa. Way to go. Great Job, keep it up American Auto Care, Durango! read more

We had a great experience! We were passing through Durango on our way to do some jeeping in Ouray/Silverton/Telluride area. Jeep was running a little hot and I suspected the fan clutch was not engaging properly. I called Brittain's and they were willing to fit me in and replace the clutch. New clutch fixed it! While on vacation, my car died and I had it towed to Brittain's. Not unexpectedly, it could not be fixed. so we had Habitat for Humanity pick it up, rented a car and headed home. Brittain's did not charge me or fuss about keeping the car there until it could be picked up. To top it off we had left the license plates on the car. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful, and the shop is clean. I was very pleased with the quality of the repairs they made, and they spent at least an hour more helping me diagnose what turned out to be a defective tire. If I could give a negative review I would. "Incompetency" at its finest! My girlfriend took her vehicle into have a pretty straightforward repair done. Every other shop in town said this would be a $250 to $450 job, however the shoddy workmanship of the so-called "mechanic" all but totaled her vehicle. The mechanic forced a finesse job and denied responsibility for over-reaming the aluminum head. Sex discrimination at its finest! Not only did they want to charge her almost $4,000 for the repair, but they charged her almost $900 to disassemble her vehicle and then refuse to fix the issue they caused. Dealing with these people on the phone is impossible. My girlfriend works 60 hours a week and is unavailable during their hours of operation. She asked me to contact these people and ask what they were going to do to fix the problem. They said they were not going to do anything to fix the problem and then hung up on me. If you want to waste your money go to this shop. Literally anywhere else in town would have done a better job. read more

I brought my car in to Brittains Highland because I had burning oil or maybe grease on my exhaust pipe. The diagnosis was leaky valve cover gaskets (I already knew about this) and a leaky crank seal. Taking the shop's recommendation I got the valve cover gaskets replaced and the leaky crank seal. Because of the location of the crank seal I also got the timing belt, hydraulic tensioner, and waterpump replaced. Upon getting the car back the power steering was messed up. I explained to Rich that I just couldn't accept the coincidence that it works perfect when you bring it in and it dies completely during the time it was in the shop. I think he was fair on this issue as he charged me half of his cost on the part and free labor to fix the problem, but it took a couple of more days to get this figured out and the fact that they tried to pass the car back to me with a huge new problem is dishonest. Although his employees swear they never did anything that could have remotely caused a power steering problem, I think that's where my problem with this shop lies. When things go wrong, they cover it up with a lie. Since the car engine was covered in oil and powersteering fluid I continued to have that burning smell and despite asking if they could clean some of it off, it never happened. After leaving town and a few hours of driving later I realized the problem had not been solved. 1. I was losing oil. 2. I noticed new grease or oil splattered on my exhaust. I look as my receipt and sure enough I don't see a crank oil seal listed in the parts. This is when I call back. Rich tells me that the oil seal was as dry as bone but at the time I didn't ask "so why didn't you replace it like every other shop does during the timing belt change?" I did send three emails with no response. To me, things didn't add up. It's a $7 part that has always been done in the past and after some research, it's been done on every timing belt replacement on all of my family members Subarus. I wasn't even given the option. While he didn't replace the crankseal, I was charged over $30 to add coolant and replace a hose not only that I was never asked about or given the option for, but also didn't fix the coolant leak I was having. Another poor diagnosis or poor repair job In the next few months here is what I've figured out. The reason I had GREASE on my exhaust is a torn boot on the CV joint. This is not even remotely close to a crankshaft oil seal leak. At the time I didn't know anything about cars but now I see it's easy to diagnose because of its "sling" pattern as the axle spins around. What about the oil leak? On the passenger side facing the back of the car there is a cover between the valve cover and the head gasket. I took it to the dealership and believe it or not you don't find it on the parts list but the mechanics said they just seal it up with gasket sealer. I did and the leak there is stopped. On the other hand, I've had two mechanics tell me the head gaskets are leaking. That pisses me off more than just knowing that they're leaking because to replace them includes doing over all the labor that I've just spent with Brittains. I know no one is perfect but hopefully this example drives home the point that it's important to make an accurate and thorough diagnosis! I spent over $900 at Britains Automotive to fix a problem and none of the work or labor was geared towards that because the diagnosis was completely wrong. Once the shop realized that it was only upon prying into the situation that they admitted that with no apology. I was never told this when I picked my car up and they acted as if everything went well. Once things started going wrong on their end they tried to cover it up smooth things over and conceal the real issues. read more

Staff seem disinterested- I called trying to set up an appointment for them to inspect my car a week into the future, and they told me to just bring it by and they could do it then. So I did, and suddenly they were booked through the next week. This repeated itself twice, so I will no longer be going to Brittain's. Perhaps it's just because I drive an older vehicle? I was lucky to find Brittains online and called them first thing in the morning and explained my problem. I was immediately impressed by their friendliness and professionalism over the phone. I was extremely happy with the work they did and the price was very reasonable. My biggist compliment though goes to their friendly, helpful environment.
