Horrible. Haven't been here since high school and it used to be okay, but we saw it was under new management so decided to give it a try. Bad to start- when we walked in we were not greeted at all. The lady at the counter continued and finished her convo she was having with someone before turning to us and saying "how many?". They are very clearly NOT busy so what a great way to welcome in customers. Came for breakfast. We both ordered 2 diff kinds of breakfast burritos- hardly any meat, some egg, minimal cheese, but mostly all bland, mushy, unseasoned potatoes. Gross. I'm not big on oversalting my food but I do like lots of spices and especially on potatoes there should at the very least have some S&P- was completely bland.. I was basically eating a potato burrito with mushy potatoes on the side. Wouldn't recommend and also will not be back. It's a shame because the building is a great size and could really do well with a great chef and better management. Need better breakfast options in this area. read more

My wife and I ate at the American Star Diner on Saturday, December 13, 2025. The diner has recently reopened under new management--and you can definitely tell. We really enjoyed both the service and the food. There are lots of great options on the breakfast menu, and everything we had was well prepared. Nice place with a typical diner vibe and menu. The space is clean and spacious, and there's a soup and salad bar. The service was friendly but very slow, even though it wasn't crowded at 3 p.m. on a Monday--possibly because there was only one server. The food was good. Update from the last experience.. sunday brunch time, two of us dined in, I ordered american breakFest as usual, with two over easy egg and one scrambled egg, This waitress told me i can pick only one but i said i normally order two type and nobody ever gave me a trouble, food like you can see in the picture from previous. Then she just said ok and took the order. When i got the food, i got two scrambled eggs and one over easy , opposite of what i asked for. Again, She checked her order pad (?) and told me she wrote down two scrambled eggs and one over easy.... I think while she was telling me i can pick only one, she took the order wrong. Since then, she didn't come to check on our table til the end, we just asked for check. I know it could be just one egg but i wanted the breakfast the way i ordered! I was there for breakfast with a friend. I ordered two eggs, potatoes, rye toast dry and coffee. The food was warm and the bread came out with butter I have dairy allergy so if I are it I would have gotten very sick. I use my own cream for obvious reasons but the server never asked or brought cream. I also had to ask her for more coffee. I am not sure if I will go back. read more

When my friends took me to AmStar (as they affectionately call it), a couple of them got omelettes, another got lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes, and I got the strawberry stuffed french toast. I wanted protein, so I just got eggs on the side. This french toast was good enough that I wanted to take home the leftovers. It had strawberry flavored cream cheese inside and sweetened strawberries on top. It reminded me of IHOP's strawberry crepes. Both the eggs and bread came out without being over or underdone. Coffee wasn't bad either. It came with free refills (as every diner should). My friends always joke about AmStar being a crappy diner, but I honestly didn't think it was that bad. It has all the essentials you would want from a diner. The interior reminds me of a classic diner with the red and blue neon lights, food court style tables, and floors that remind me of a school hallway. I really like the breakfast here , excellent service and some really great options! I recently tried the cream chipped beef , this is something I never order but it was by far the best cream chipped beef I have ever eaten! The omelettes are great and the 2-2-2 was my go to breakfast for years . They have a breakfast bar so you can get in and out quickly and easily. Great option for breakfast! I also had the salad bar which was also solid , but definitely not where it was pre Covid. Eggs were cooked perfectly at over medium but there was unfortunately egg shells in it. French toast was nothing to write home about, I would recommend to get the pancakes instead. AmStar (friendly local nickname) was a classic diner where you found cheap prices for dishes of american cuisine made of eggs, potatoes, and waffles. Simple but classic. Wasn't expecting much but came out more satisfied than expected. The diner has improved over the years. It used to be open 24/7 but the hours have changed. DINE IN (COVID): American Star Diner is a classic diner, and more! My first visit was during COVID after we moved to the area. Service was great and the menu was extensive including the specials (I recall a pumpkin pancake was on the specials!) we were seated immediately and had our food in what seemed minutes. Diner coffee may not be for everyone but it is actually my favorite. I'm far from a coffee snob. I ordered a version of a western omelet with veggies, ham and cheese - it was exactly what I hoped for. I'm also a huge fan of when omelets are made as a scramble rather than a fold over! Hubs had an all American breakfast with eggs, bacon/sausage and pancakes - SO much food and cooked perfectly. TAKEOUT: I have also ordered from American Star via takeout. A friend and I split the appetizer sampler (mmm mozzarella sticks!). The wings were surprisingly good as well. I opted for a burger and fries - the burger was a great size, was not try and had plenty of toppings. In sum, as someone who grew up in the Tristate area going to diners with family at least once a month, American Star was exactly what I hoped for and then some. This was definitely NOT what I expected. I sat down at the counter for a late Sunday breakfast (I don't do brunch), after a beautiful drive up county. I thought it would be a quiet meal allowing me nourishment and hydration before the turn around trip home. It was not to be. Although my French toast breakfast was served, before I was half way through there was a shout from the kitchen: "FIRE!" Sure enough, at the front left corner by the transformer cabinet I saw billowing dark smoke and shooting flames. It looked like a grease fire, but someone said it was burning mulch from a carelessly tossed cigarette. Either way it was nasty and looked dangerous. Discretion being the better choice than valor, I followed the instructions of the server to get out of the building. I threw down enough to cover breakfast and walked out just as the first fire truck was screaming its arrival. Firemen were already there parked haphazardly and changing into their fire fighting gear. My car was a bit in the way, so I slowly pulled out. Comedically, an old dude volunteer was trying to wave me out of the lot, rotating his arm like a propeller, impatient with me. Unfortunately, he was also standing in my way, so his antics were funny more than helpful. Still, I navigated out of that spot. By the time I drove around to the right exit there were five fire trucks and a few other emergency vehicles making the scene. No one was hurt. American Star Diner may only be a three star Yelp experience, but they delivered a five alarm show. God bless our First Responders. read more

In addition, had 3 cups of coffee. Drank the 1st which was lukewarm. 2nd was room temperature so I sent it back. Got a 3rd, room temp. If it is one thing I love, it's diner's. They are one of, if not my favorite, kinds of restaurants to eat at. This can be me to be a little bit more critical of diner's when I review, but to those I enjoy will give it my highest praise. That being said, I've been coming to American Stat Diner for years now and it has always been consistent good regardless of breakfast, lunch or dinner, night or day. It's not the biggest diner but it holds many tables and booths to seat customer without feeling too cramped. There is a worse variety of items to order from the menu, with breakfast options all day, a decent salad bar and fantastic dessert section too. My personal favorite is of course the Chicken Parmesan (one of my favorite meals) and the portions for all their meals are decent too. Prices seem fair as well. All in all, American Star Diner is a great diner and a staple for my friends, family and I to eat at when we get are in the mood for a good diner. Also, I really like the 'star' tiles on the floor with each states initials in them. I'm not sure if I ever ate at or saw PA, but is is there somewhere. I'll find it one day! read more

Avoid the kid's apple juice. We have been coming to American Star for years for breakfast and it has been pretty good. Although yesterday, we were at breakfast and ordered 2 kids breakfast and 1 adult breakfast. Waitress charged us $7.58 for kids apple juice, which was typically included with their breakfast. When I brought up the extra charge, she didn't seem apologetic and actually said that prices had gone up and that she had given us a refill. I ordered the eggs Benedict and the poached eggs were less than poached (under cooked even for poached). The whole dish was flavorless. I also ordered a side of bacon and it tasted as though they salted it. My daughter ordered the chicken and waffles. Also zero flavor And the chicken was so hard to chew and tasted like cardboard. The coffee was so watered down and orange juice was tinted brown and sour tasting. The late she ordered tasted like there was windex and clorox in it. The The food made us both feel very sick feeling afterwards. My daughter says her intestines are "churning" And 15 minutes later she is in the bathroom. I think I'm next. Omg I feel so sick. We stopped by for breakfast last week; but the restaurant was COLD. We had to wear our jackets. The restaurant temperature had to be in the 60s. It spoiled much of our enjoyment of the meal. My wife and I stopped by the other day for a late lunch. I observed one of the staff wrapping the utensils (knife, spoon, and fork) with a napkin and a strap to hold everything together. As I observed this person, they were doing 3 or 4 other things at the same time. Wiping down tables, seating new guests, and handling money, etc. Each time going straight back to their utensil project. At no time did this person attempt to wash or sanitizer their hands. God knows what filth and bacteria are on every single knife, spoon, and fork issued to every patron. If you're looking for a restaurant with good hygienic practices, this is not your place. This was my first meal of 2018 and I can't complain! I love diners around Philly and this was the first time I visited American Star Diner. We arrived here around 10, 10:30 and the place was pretty empty! However, come 11, 11:30 it really started to fill up quick. This was on a Sunday, so I'm sure church-goers and others were filing in around this time. The diner has a large eating space, so I'm sure there's typically seating available. The food was fantastic! I ordered the Philly Cheese steak Omelette and am I glad I did! I typically don't eat heavier meats for breakfast, but this was perfectly proportioned as far as the steak and egg goes! The omelette was not runny (which I tend to experience at some diners/restaurants) and the hash browns were crispy and moist!
