The "Rachel"
Tracy N.

My nephew was craving a "Rachel" and insisted on Pumpernick's, so we make the trip with my 105 year old grandmother. I have to say the "Rachel" lived up to the hype. Of course you must start with the pickle bar, and grandmom insisted on strawberry ice cream to end the meal. Needless to say it was enough food for the week.

3 layer sandwich

Went on Wednesday, a wait line was present. I waited like 20 minutes. Was seated in a booth. Our waitress was good, but no expressions. We did not wait long for food. Mushroom barley soup is very good, I did request for extra temperature hot for my soup. My soup was as I requested. My husband ordered a 3 layered sandwich. I ordered a side Cesar salad with anchovies. All was good. I recommend it this restaurant.

4/13/24 Cheese blintzes- a MUST!!!

4/13/24 first time at pumpernick's. My sister recommended it bcs they go there all the time. I'm not much of a deli person but their menu was quite extensive- so that was a plus. The server we had was not particularly friendly. It was a very busy day there. That's probably the only thing that wasn't up to par to me. I liked the pickle bar and almost every pickle I tasted. I opted for the key west salad with shrimp in an Asian glaze and sesame dressing. It was good- it had mandarin oranges, black olives, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and roasted peppers. I would have enjoyed the salad a lot more if the peppers were red roasted- it would've made the salad more colorful. It was good. We ordered the cheese blintzes- to go-they were excellent. Choice of cherry blueberry (that's extra) or Sour-cream, or applesauce. They were delicious and so tasty I didn't need to put on any toppings. The cheese was gently sweetened. These were magnificent!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! I would go there JUST for this!! I felt that the prices were pretty high. I can see why though it's a massive building thru have to pay for. Not to mention the food costs through the roof. We know who we can thank for that- right? For us 3 it was 88$ for lunch. Latkes were over 10$ for 3, we ordered 2 salads & they were roughly 19$, (I see why though- shrimp- large very tasty shrimp) one sandwich, 2 sodas, and the blintzes were over 15$ (they up charge you if you want fruit topping). The prices wouldn't keep me away though. I would definitely go back if I were in the area.

Great food and service. Hugh menu. So much to pick from. The on line website is one of the most comprehensive. Needs a bigger parking lot.

This is a tough one. There were a lot of disappointing things about this storied restaurant. I had…read morechicken noodle soup (there is no hot or cold borscht). It was okay. It's broth was good but there wasn't enough chicken or vegetables and there were too many noodles for the broth. It was served in a flat bowl, so the ratios were all wrong. I got a nova sandwich and the portion of salmon in the sandwich was stingy in the extreme. Truthfully I could barely taste the salmon through the lettuce and tomatoes. Its toasted rye was nothing special. They have a "free pickle bar" and I had full sours. They were the real deal though small. The tables and chairs are not at all comfortable, I was thinking of meeting a friend here I don't see how it would be conducive to relaxing. The server was warm. The problem as any Jew knows is, we don't have many Jewish delis we can retreat to in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Because this is our safe spot. I came here in fact after receiving some very sad news, to comfort myself. Not sure if it serves that purpose between the chicken soup, the stingy nova, and the uncomfortable seating.

As soon as I walked through the doors at Amici, the ambiance made me feel transported back to those wonderful places I remember from so long ago. It was a feeling of comfort, familiarity, and cravings for all the deliciousness housed within. The bread counter on the left was the first stop where I picked up a marble rye and some hoagie rolls. The staff were extremely friendly with suggestions and slicing up the loaf we got. Then it was on pick up two small tomato pies, which are a box of tasty goodness. Had to grab a couple of the biggest pickles I've ever seen. And we couldn't get out of the door without grabbing a small selection of cookies. Sadly I didn't get a chance to taste any of their sandwiches but the menu had my mouth watering. They offer a good selection of pastas, sauces, and other products both sweet or savory. All in all, you cannot go wrong making Amici a regular stop of your own.

It's really a rather small shop with one side being the bakery and the other the deli. 10/10 their cannolis. It's hard to find any bakery that stuffs them fresh but they do! I like that that carry items from other bigger Italian markets like Corropolese and Talluto's. This time around I ordered some sandwiches to go and my dad was super impressed with the Italian hoagie I ordered for him. All the sandwiches come with pickles. You do have to pay extra for hot peppers. The staff is nice and the place is always clean, I'd be interested to try more of their sandwiches as they had a pretty decent menu. Definitely a nice spot in the middle of a Lansdale strip mall.

My wife took a slice of bread from each deli and numbered them 1-5. Only my wife was aware of the mapping of the deli to the numbers. I then returned to the room and my wife stepped away. I made the sandwiches and then converted the numbers to letters. #1 becomes letter C, #2 becomes letter A, etc. The mapping of numbers to letters was only known by me. Below are the results in order of worst to best. #5 Original South Philly Jewish Rye (available at Giant Food Markets) cost $6 for a full loaf. This was our least favorite. No flavor and the texture was completely off. The bread was very dry, almost stale. If you are short on time (and money), this will work but my recommendation is head to a deli and get some real NY Jewish Rye. #4 Ben & Irv's Deli in Southamptom cost $5.50 for a half loaf. The texture gets us closer to a true deli rye bread but still dry and light on flavor. #3 Moish and Itzy's in Newtown cost $6.00 for a half loaf. The crust is chewy as it should be and tasted great. The inside is a bit on the dry side. This was just a hair behind the #2 spot. Candidly I would rank this higher but my wife found the dryness unacceptable and I never win an argument with her. #2 Borscht Belt in Newtown cost $10 for a half loaf. This is a softer texture if that is your thing. My wife liked the texture but I like a chewier crust and heartier bread. I don't know that this bread will hold up to a mound of meat or wet toppings. The flavor was terrific. If you don't mind spending $10 for a half loaf of bread, then give it a try. I'm saving for retirement so probably won't return anytime soon. #1 [Top Spot] Manny's Famous Deli in Holland cost $4.50 for a half loaf. Winner winner chicken dinner. This is the fan favorite and a must try for anyone that values a good bread. Manny's offers the gold standard of ryes and at a price that leaves enough money to also buy a deli pickle. Let us know if you would like us to assess another favorite food. Even better, are you convinced you have a favorite? Put your conviction to the test and conduct a blind tasting of your own.

Our not-so-great experience may have been a result of the choices we made, but I'm unsure. When you first enter you are in front of a nicely stocked meat counter, loaded with different deli meats. To the left is a dining area with a sign stating "seat yourself". The place is a bit dated with a nice casual vibe. We were greeted by a server who gave us menus and took our drink orders. Service was top notch. When it came time to order I asked how the pastrami was. Server replied "the best". Ok I'll take a pastrami sandwich, my wife a corned beef. The server also asked if we wanted pickles and tomatoes which I said yes. She quickly brought a little bowl, which I chopped up and we enjoyed. The sandwiches came out and these things could've come from a school cafeteria honestly. A minimal amount of cold, sliced meat along with a small bag of chips was unimpressive. What happened to the warm, thick cut, juicy meat sandwich you could barely get your mouth around that we expected? We looked at each other thinking WTF? No sooner did we notice a sign on the wall "NY style, thick cut pastrami and corned beef NOW AVAILABLE" Now maybe we just don't want to accept responsibility but shouldn't the server have asked if that's what we wanted? Anyway we left hungry and saddened by our $48 experience. Def not worth it.
