This is my second review (the first was 1/27/21) and is for a totally different job. Based on my earlier employ of Abedallah of American Star Construction ("Abedallah") in January to fix my awning, I had him build a deck as an extension to my front porch. The deck was made of Trex(-like) material, and railings were of redwood. Before awarding the job I gathered three estimates from: 1. a casual laborer who barely spoke English, not licensed or bonded. Although his estimate was ultimately only 31% of Abedallah's, admittedly, I had less than full trust he would do anything more than lay a basic deck of questionable quality. 2. a licensed and bonded professional construction company. I had full confidence that the man who looked at my property and the task at hand would do a wonderful job. However, his estimate was ultimately a little more 2.5 times the amount Abedallah asked for! 3. Abedallah. Although he is not licensed or bonded, again he exuded confidence in his work, and at a price midway between the other two. Accordingly, it was not a difficult decision to give him the job. As for the job itself, as I mentioned, it was to be a an approximately 5' x 13' Trex(-like) deck (ultimately he used Home Depot's version of Trex, Fiberon ArmorGuard, which I discovered is of the same quality, but more inexpensively acquired). He visited with me at least twice before the job began, taking measurements and providing me samples of the material to assuage my concerns and answer all my questions. He told me he would do the job himself and would take him two days, and we set up a mid-week date, perhaps a week or 10 days later. On the appointed day, he started the job himself, but a co-worker joined him an hour or two later. Both men went to work tirelessly, and knocked on my door several times during the day for requisite bathroom breaks and such, as well as to confer with me about pertinent details. In fact, Abedallah found that my front porch was actually slanted. He explained that he could either build the deck out from the porch straight and perfect (but with maybe a half-inch lip protruding where it connected with my porch), OR, he could build it even with the porch (which would then mean the deck would be canted downward at a slight angle). Of course this meant that items I placed on the deck (i.e., a plate or glass on the railing) would have a good chance of falling off. I opted for the former where the deck is perfectly straight. The lip is very small and of little consequence. I mention this because another contractor might have simply gone on with the job and not sought my input. Abedallah strove to be clear and transparent, providing me with a choice. This is how he works and you have to respect that. As an extra bonus, I was more than surprised that late in the afternoon, he told me that they would actually finish the deck this same day, great news for convenience and efficiency which benefitted us both. They did in fact stay and work on the deck until darkness set in around 8:30pm. My main regret -- although I had provided them water and drinks during the day -- was that I didn't make a frozen pizza or something for them. Why? They never took a single meal break -- neither lunch OR dinner! I felt bad but thought they would've brought their own food or taken a meal break. All in all, that's real dedication and perseverance above and beyond. The deck turned out PERFECT (SEE photos), and is very complimentary to my Spanish Mediterranean home. Now, with my recent retirement, I get to walk out onto my deck and relax in a rocker with a sandwich and beer, newspaper or book, and watch the world go by while getting fresh air and sun as needed. The deck is on the corner of my house so I get a mild 2-way breeze that is tamped down by the alcove of my porch. Also, since it is an Eastern exposure, the sun shines on it in the morning -- perfect for coffee and a Danish -- and is cool the rest of the day as the noon sun folds back Westward behind my house, swathing the deck in wonderful shade. I feel almost as if another WING has been added to my home. I'm totally loving it and will host my very first Memorial Day BBQ on it tomorrow! To sum up, everything Abedallah said he would do, he did. To me, promptness, trust, and confidence in someone providing a quality product is of the utmost importance, and again, Abedallah and American Star Construction came through. He even reiterated his virtual lifetime guarantee of his work, encouraging me to contact him or them should I need anything or have any questions about the deck. What more can one ask for? I'm certain I will find another project for Abedallah again, and will not hesitate to call on him. I wholeheartedly recommend you give him a call likewise. We hired Abedallah for so many projects in our house: building a noise cancelation wall (on two floors, 4 layers of noise cancelation), building a wall made of shelves, installing cabinets, removing countertops, etc. Every time Abedallah arrived on time, he's fully equipped for so many different kinds of work, also friendly and very reliable. I ordered two new red oak slab doors that I needed installed into existing jambs including morticing for the hinges and installation of the doorknob hardware. I think he trimmed a bit too much off the doors (so there's a bigger-than-you'd-expect gap), one of the cuts tapered off at the end (so the edge wasn't straight). At one point, he asked if I had any wood-filler (never a good sign). Turns out he started to drill a hole there wasn't supposed to be one and needed wood filler to patch it -- in brand new doors! I didn't notice it at first, but one of the hinges made a horrible squeak. He said that it's a new installation and it'll eventually quiet down. It's been a while and it hasn't quieted down. (A hinge squeaks because it's not level.) I tried adjusting it myself and it's better but not perfect. So I'd definitely not use his services again, at least notice doors. read more

Abedallah and his team went above and beyond to help me fix my deck. He gave me a very reasonable quote to repair my two cantilever decks that were in a very poor condition. Due to the pandemic and other contractors delaying the progress of our remodeling, Abedallah had to come out several times and didn't get to finish the job until June. He's the most reliable and responsive out of all the contractors I had to deal with during the past 6 months, for that I am very thankful. If you are looking for someone who won't flake on you, who will tell you exactly how to fix your deck or fence, who will provide excellent quality of work, and who is always patient with your endless questions, save yourself some time from doing hours of additional research and give Abedallah a call. Trust me, I have called 3 other companies around the area and Abedallah is not only the most responsive and punctual to our appointments, but he also offers the most competitive quote. I contacted American Star Construction through Yelp to repair a section of wood fencing that needed repair due to a recent storm. The quoted price was about what others were quoting so I went with them since they were available within my schedule. The owner, Abedellah showed up on time within the appointment window. The total job took about an hour and the repaired fence looks good. When asked about the old wood from the previous fence he said it would be an additional charge to have it hauled away. This came as a surprise to me since I've had previous fence/gate work done and hauling away the old fence was always included with the price. The price he gave me to haul away the old fence was a third the cost of the work done so I declined. Had I known the total cost to repair and remove the old fence would be this high I would not have gone with American Star Construction. It's debatable if the scope of work was clearly explained, but I made an assumption based on previous experience and it proved to be wrong. Owner states he only said materials and labor would be covered. I figured labor and removal of old fence were the same. The repaired fence looks good, but I'm left with the old fence to deal with on my own since the project would now be over budget. If you go with this contractor, make sure you ask all the right questions because my opinion is that they are not forthcoming of all the details. I will not be contacting this company again for any future work - lesson learned. read more

One of few business owners that I have come across who promptly responds to inquiries in an expedited manner. Owner was kind enough to find time on a Sunday and take care of my issues. He further recommended alternative solutions for issues that could have seriously hurt my bottom line, had I ignored. The only downside was it did cost me and I should have taken a quote prior to finishing his services. They were efficient and we liked their workmanship, however, we wished we asked to see the sample of the fence panels because they were not as high quality as we expected. We wanted to convert our under stair area to a doggie room. I reached out to three companies and American Star had the most fair price! Working with me to fit the project within my budget. Abadellah was on time and communicated with me leading up to the installation for ideas. Once the installation began he was very polite and tidy. His craftsmanship is on point. Good competent work, and responsive communication on a smallish job replacing a pergola attached to the house. I take off one star because they said the $150 fee I paid for the estimate would be applied to the final bill for the work. After the work was done they charged the full amount of the estimate, saying the $150 discount was figured into the estimate from the beginning (there is no mention of it in the estimate). I didn't argue because the work was good, and still worth it, but that's sure not the way that should have worked. read more

Our wooden entry gate was warped because of humidity and rain. We couldn't close the door and the door is stuck in the lock area. I called Abedallah to check it and give us an estimate. He showed up quickly and described how he can fix it with a reasonable price. We agreed and he immediately started the job and finished it in about 3 hours. The quality of work is important to him. Yelp auto-requested a quote from American Star when I contacted another vendor (with my consent). American Star reached out to me. Once I gave them my contact information, they wanted $50 to give me a quote. When I looked at there web-site, it states free quote. So giving them one star for misrepresentation. When I messaged him that I will be posting a review, Abedallah got back to me with the following comment "Yes a free Estimate through the phone if you have all the measurements and if you can provide some pictures I can give you a rough quote". They are everything they claim to be - honest, reliable, up front about costs, etc. I needed some wood rot work done prior to getting it painted and I had some very challenging areas that required moving gutters, exhaust pipes, conduit, etc. He was able to figure it all out and did a very professional job in 2 days. These guys are great! Admittedly I'm a rookie when it comes to construction! I know, I know, shame on me. Anyway, we hired a roofing company to replace our roof this year and the first night it rained we had water coming into our home. Naturally I called the roofing company and fired off. The roofer insisted the roof was good but said the wood on the whole side of our home needed replacement to prevent water intrusion. Fast-forward, I called Abedallah out from American Star Construction, he was super honest! Not only did he respond to my yelp request right away (within 5mins) but he also provided me a super cheap price (much lower than the competition) to replace the siding of our home. When he got to my house he tested the wood and to my surprise he said nothing needed to be done. He looked at my leak and provided me the evidence I needed to require the roofer to fix it. He also gave me some helpful tidbits of info about filing a claim through the roofers surety bond to get the inside water damages repaired on their dime. I needed my back stairs, fence, and small deck replaced. American Star contacted me the same day I called and had someone come by to provide an estimate the next day. I didn't want to just accept the first bid so I sought additional estimates. It was difficult to get anything in writing from anybody else and American Star was very competitive in price. After a few weeks I asked if they could still do the job. They came out that same week and finished in two days. The redwood stairs and landing look great!
