Amazing custom American Spoon gift package from Aleana W. Awesome products from Michigan.

I was introduced to American Spoon by a friend who gifted my wife and me with a wonderful assortment of this company's premium jams, salsas, fruit butters, condiments and more. We were immediately impressed with the presentation of our gift basket and how well the shipment was protected from potential damage. American Spoon is a family owned and operated company with several locations in Michigan. If you don't live near a physical location you can still easily order from their online store and have your purchase shipped. Enjoy it yourself or send it to a friend, they have wonderful gift baskets. They source the best local ingredients for their products and prepare everything in small batches. Their products taste amazing and have a lot of character. My wife and I are working our way through our gift box. So far we have only sampled a few items and have found each one truly fabulous. The Chili Jam is spicy and delicious on so many things. We have also enjoyed the Mango Habanero Salsa and the Dried Chili Salsa. We look forward to sampling the rest of the products we received, I know they will be wonderful.

What a cute little store. Best part is that there was a free shipping (to Honolulu!) with the purchase of 6 (or more) things promotion happening. The problem was limiting it to 6! We did pick up a jar of granola for father's day, which was well received and thoroughly enjoyed. Quality locally made products, you cannot go wrong.

The marketing team really missed the mark with this image. Nothing about this photo is appetizing or even remotely appealing. Sorry, folks.

My family received American Spoon's Complete Pancake Breakfast for Christmas. It included a bag of pancake mix, two jars of fruit toppings (sour cherry and blueberry), and a jar of their maple syrup. I hadn't previously heard of the company and didn't know what to expect. It turns out that their pancakes, fruit toppings, and maple syrup are exceptional! We were really impressed and the quality was excellent! Delicious and highly recommended. Unfortunately the promo photo that came with the kit shows a disgusting stack of lopsided pancakes that are drowning in fruit toppings. It's not aesthetically pleasing or even remotely appetizing. The product team did their job very well, but the marketing team blew it with this photo. Not sure how this image slipped by the QC team. Yuck!

I support the local food thing, I do. And generally, I am happy to pay a lot of money for seriously good stuff. And I tried the local sour cherries from a nearby fruit stand. HOLY COW! Tart. Bursting. Delicate. Bright. Beguiling, even? And then I try American Spoons Sour Cherry products, and it just misses, in my book. Too much sugar and too much heat kills the delicacy of the fruit. I mean... I know it's got to be shipped all over the country, and be made in quantity, etc. etc. I just don't see all the fuss or why you would pay the tariff for such a thing. It's like the salt water taffy or maybe even fudge of jam shops (if that makes ANY sense). It is nice that they have a big tasting bar. It was less nice that some of the crackers tasted rancid. But I was glad to be able to sample their products. Jam tasting, as an activity, is WAY underrated.

I heard about Crooked Tree Breadworks on a recent trip to Petoskey and dropped by on my last day in…read morethe area. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to visit until near the end of the day and at that point they had sold out of most of their items, including the famous pepper parmesan rolls. They still had a few items left and we decided to pick up two of them. Kouign Amann ($4.95) - The caramelization of the sugar on this pastry is on point. The bottom has a layer of sugar that has melted into a glaze with extreme caramelization, almost on the verge of being burnt. If it had been left in the oven for a few moments more, it would probably have started to develop an acrid taste. Luckily, it was pulled out at just the right time. Even the sides of this pastry have been graced with sweetness and a top layer of thicker sugar crystals/grains adds an amazing crunch. While the kouign amann may not have as many thin laminated layers as a croissant, there is still an excellent buttery interior which helps balance the outside sweetness. The interior is fluffy and layered well into an even honey comb pattern. This kouign amann exceeded my expectations. (5/5) 3:00 O'clock Baguette ($5.90) - Yikes, this is by far the most expensive baguette I've ever bought. I was kind of dreading it when I first felt the baguette through the bag - it seemed a bit soft and limpy. When I tore into it soon afterwards, I found my concerns to be somewhat unfounded. By somewhat I mean that yes, there is hardly a crust on the baguette, but the interior still exhibits a nice chew and the flavor is very well developed. It's a decent baguette, but nothing outstanding. Perhaps the crust would be better earlier in the day when fresh baked? (4/5) I was definitely surprised by the quality of the baked goods at Crooked Tree Breadworks. I'll have to revisit earlier in the day on my next visit to the area so I can try more of their breads and pastries.
