Cute wooden decorated general store with a large selection of spices and condiments, plus some Michigan based snack brands and an area in back where you can get premade tuna, cherry chicken salad and more, as well as made-to-order sandwiches and naan bread pizzas. The service was friendly and helpful. The prepared and fresh food itself, 3.5 star worthy -- but overall the store gets a 4 star because it's a terrific option for takeout for a picnic at the park a block away. I was shopping with my mom in Downtown Petoskey. We were hungry and stumbled upon this cute little market and deli. They have such a great selection of specialty foods. We ordered sandwiches and a Greek salad. All were so delicious. The salad was fresh and the dressing tasted homemade. The ham sandwich I had was perfectly done on really fresh bread. The people working there were helpful and friendly. Somehow I missed the wine room downstairs so I must go back! There is no place to sit inside but there are a few tables on the porch where you can eat. All of it was great. read more

We have been past this shop multiple times but it is always so full that we skip it, but after reading a few reviews and visiting it ourselves I can now see why...and is worth braving the crowds to go inside! Once in you see how it is the older store of years ago with fun wall to ceiling shelves piled with all kinds of delectable options. They have sauces, jams, pastas, chocolates, dry goods and a whole assortment of hard to find items. It was a delight to spend some time looking through the shelves. The store is on the small side so the aisles are narrow but you do want to peruse each one to see all the amazing items. They have a great menu as well as some seating outside if you choose to stay onsite to eat. It is also great for grabbing something to take to a local park or on your walk around. They have a lot of hot and cold options so something for everyone! I liked that they had both local and international items so we could try new things or favorites. If you're anything like me, you'll walk into Symons General Store and immediately feel a sense of nostalgia... there is so much history and character to this tiny local gem of a business. Symons offers all kinds of gourmet packaged products from novelty candies, Michigan-made food and drink, wine, snacks, etc... but I've now been a couple of times for their deli counter! The sandwiches at Symons are delicious and high quality... I also appreciate that they are willing to customize anything on the menu for you. On a recent trip, I had a wrap with turkey, lettuce, tomato, my husband had a BLAT + Turkey as a sandwich, and they prepared a special "side of turkey" with a few slices of bread for my very picky kids. They don't toast, but it's still fabulous and a fun place to shop or look either way. We go to Petoskey every year and had never been in this shop because it's always flooded with people stopping in. I had thought that it was just a shop for dry goods, but it turns out that they have a delicious menu you can order from in the back corner. Their menu boasted tons of amazing-sounding sandwiches, flatbreads, chips and more. We were looking for a quick bite and were pumped that we could snag a to-go sandwich. My sandwich was huge and loaded up with turkey, cheese, lettuce, avocado and mayo. All of the ingredients were super fresh and everyone in our party loved it. This place also does sell lots of grocery-like goods. From unique pastas to sauces, wines, candies and liquors, you can pick up a few special, boutique items to push your dinner to the next level. We wandered around while we waited for our sandwiches to be made and I was so excited to find patatas bravas sauce, as well as a few other tapas sauces from Spain. I haven't been able to find a spot in Indy with that sauce, so it was surprising to discover it in a small town. There are a handful of seats out front, so we took our food out there to enjoy as we watched the rain pour down. We'll be back! read more

I grew up going to Symons General store. I think I had my first croissant here and would frequently stop by for them after my orthodontist appointments . Now, when I'm home visiting, I stop by for a sandwich or cheese and to roam the aisles of this nostalgic store. I love their Italian sandwich on a wrap- highly recommend. I recently got a breakfast sandwich but was so disappointed, it was cold in the middle (specifically the sausage) so I threw it out. The only reason I'm still giving 4 stars is because I've never had this happen to me in the 15 m+ years I've been going here, it usually serves high quality food and has great service. Yum!! Had a delicious breakfast sandwich before leaving my trip to Petoskey. It was the Lake Street Sanger sub cheddar and add avocado. The store was very cute inside and had lots of local and yummy items for purchase, as well as a wine cellar in the basement. So, there's a business in Harbor Springs that frequently has long lines of people who took a road trip to the area just for the shop's renowned sandwiches. I've had them, and they *are* good, but they do not hold a candle to Symon's. Their menu features perhaps the best sandwiches I've ever had. The Cali Turkey is my favorite but I've also had (and loved) the Shipwreck, Five Dragon, and Italian. Usually ready in ten minutes and served up by friendly staff. The store is also a fun stop for wine and spirits, gourmet grocery and deli items and lots of unique candy. I try to give consumables for gifts, and they have a nice selection of sauces, olive oil, tea, and more. read more

Was up in the area with friends last weekend and we popped into this cute and charming store. The cheese selection and deli looked amazing. I wish I would have gotten a sandwich. They have all kinds of jams, spices, spreads, crackers, etc. You name it, they probably have it. Truly a general store. They also have some old fashioned candy to choose from and take by the ounce. Simon's is a slightly self-conscious but generally successful seller of higher-end condiments, sandwiches and the like. It is, in fact, laid out much like the classic general store with the general merchandise in the front on shelves along narrow aisles, meats & cheeses in the back, and jars and jars of candy by the cash registers. The candy may be the best part - it's the fun bulk kind that you measure out in scoops and pay for by the ounce. No tubs of Halloween-sized Snickers here! This is probably one of our favorite gourmet markets in the north west. The old general store vibe is on point. Creaky wood floors, wooden fixtures and counters merchandised with jars of gourmet treats savory and sweet. You step in and smell so many delicious things... glad weight can't be gained through the nose lol they have a cheese and deli counter and gourmet olives... to go snacks. But the biggest thing that drags us in every time are the shelved product. Oils, sauces, chocolates, coffee, beer and liquor and truffle items (I'm a sucker for all things truffle) basically if your a home cook or foodie you will LOVE this place. They offer small business, local and kitschy brands. More than edibles too... candles, soaps and grooming supplies. Eclectic spread. Fair/typical pricing and honestly great for stocking stuffers.... yes I'm already thinking Christmas thoughts.... the service isn't up to par however ... Ordered a california turkey sandwich (turkey, pesto, goat cheese) after a run and maybe because i was starving or maybe because the sandwich was awesome, i devoured the sandwich in under a minute. Cute little store with random grocery type items: saw some asian sauces and spices and one row over, some stacy pita chips. The cheese selection looked awesome and if there more time, i would have spent more time at this cute little shop. A gourmet food store and old timey general store combined in one. They have a heck of a cheese case too. Wine, yep got that too. Fancy mustards, honeys, jams, snacks, candy. Oh my gosh this is such a white milennial kind of store but I LOVED this place! SO cute and old, and the selection was so fun to look through! It's like the one room schoolhouse version of Plum Market. We were in there for awhile just looking at all of the interesting things they had! My girlfriend and I were in town for a weekend getaway. Looking for a quick place for lunch we can across Simon's General Store.. A quaint market that also has a small deli in the back, we both ordered the Italian Sandwich, grilled, on Wheat bread. We sat outside and watched the foot traffic while we ate our lunch on an old whiskey barrel, sitting on a barstools. The sandwiches were large and fantastic, my girlfriend only ate half. We ordered two sandwiches and after one bite threw them out. The ciabatta roll was stale cold and hard. The sandwhich was dripping with pesto ( too much ) the mozzarella had no taste and in the middle of tomato season a very mediocre tomato. Stale bread is not acceptable. The so called sour dough bread is nothing more then processed bread from a bag. Do not waste your money on sandwhices from this place they are poor quality. read more
