It was really hard choosing between solar companies; all of them seem to be priced very closely, and all of them have a full range of reviews from "they were awesome, everything was amazing!" down to "they burned my house down." I would say that at the end, I'm happy I went with American Array Solar and Roofing with my project; it took longer than I expected to complete and the communication was a bit spotty, but at the end of the day, I have a working solar system at the originally quoted price. To start, Anthony in sales was great, he was able to pull in everyone needed to make the initial plan. My project is bit non-standard because of my tile roof but we were able to determine that wouldn't be a problem. Things started to break down a bit during the engineering process; after the lengthy discussion I had with Anthony about my roof, including sending photos of what kind of tiles they'd need to replace the ones that inevitably break, the engineer's design that the installers showed up with was based on a standard shingled roof. The installers were pros though; they showed up several hours late but ended up finishing the panel mounting after working into the night. I'm not sure what went wrong after that (whether it was the city inspector's schedule or the installer's schedule) but I didn't hear anything for several months, and Anthony had to help me chase down an update. When the installers came for the final inspection, the city inspector pointed out they needed a second grounding rod, and while they weren't prepared for that they went to Home Depot and got that installed and approved the same day. So, in conclusion, everything ended up being installed according to the original spec and price, just taking longer than I expected.

During the installation of panels on my new home, their team drilled 20+ holes through my living room ceiling, which resulted in dust and debris falling directly into my living room and all over my furniture. The lack of care for my property was shocking. Their communication and professionalism have been even worse. They have shown up to my house unannounced at least four separate times, and on occasions when I wasn't home, workers entered my property anyway. On one particularly frustrating day while I was at work, they called me over 15 times back-to-back to say inspectors were at my house -- despite never scheduling the visit with me. Yet when I try to reach them, no one answers the phone or follows up. This company's operational discipline and customer respect are seriously lacking. What should have been a straightforward solar installation has turned into a stressful, messy experience. I deeply regret choosing Southwest Solar and would strongly encourage anyone considering them to proceed with extreme caution.

I really appreciate the direct accountability and quick resolution. I'm leaving my original review below for transparency, but their prompt response today restored my confidence in their management. I originally had a positive experience with California Solar Electric during my 10.12 kW solar and Powerwall 3 installation last year. Unfortunately, their post-install customer support and business ethics are nonexistent. I referred a friend who completed their installation months ago. I was explicitly promised a $500 referral bonus for this. After months of waiting, I tried following up multiple times privately to give them a chance to make it right, but I am now being completely ignored. It's a shame because I have several neighbors here in Fountain Valley who are currently shopping around for solar and battery storage. I was planning to refer them here, but I cannot recommend a company that fails to honor its own written agreements and ducks communication. Buyer beware: the installation team does good work, but do not trust a word management says about referral incentives or post-sale promises. Still waiting for my $500.

Spencer from DLS Development gave a great pitch, plus the quote was one of the lowest we received from almost all roofing companies. They reached out over a month later to check in and offer an additional discount. Pros: The workers did an excellent job and worked from nearly sunup to sundown. They had a few questions, which I could answer (or get my husband to answer) when I was around. It took about 4 days for them to tear off the old shingles and install the new ones. And it was hot out there! They did the work quickly, professionally, and efficiently! One of the crew members performed a walk-through with my husband once they finished, and my husband was very pleased with the finished product. I feel very grateful looking at my roof now, since the old one was very old. Cons Once we signed the contract and paid the initial deposit, we were told that the permit for our house needed to be pulled and that it would take about a week. Almost two weeks later, I asked the project manager if she had pulled the permit and when the project could begin. She then let me know the roofers would begin the following week. I guess I hoped that the project manager would have reached out to me first to let me know that the permit situation was complete and that they would begin the roofing process. You need to take initiative and find out what's happening, since I've never had a roof replaced before. Next, the project manager informed us they discovered and replaced rotted wood. The project manager sent us a change order for the additional amount, yet the contract did not list any extra charge for rotted wood. Additionally, they had already replaced the "rotted wood" before we signed anything, and they had no clear photos showing any rotted wood. It took a lot of emails and texts back and forth before we reached a resolution we were happy with. Still, it was a headache and frustrating for several days; we had to deal with uncertainty and explanations. Finally, the project manager never confirmed when the inspector for the last inspection would actually come to our house to collect my signature on a form. We didn't know whether we needed to be at home, leave the document out somewhere, or when the process would officially end. I received an email from the project manager asking me to reply and attach the form with my signature, as the inspector had come around but could not collect it because I was not there. I replied to the email with the form and asked the project manager if I needed to do anything else. Only when I reached out again to the general DLS development general email was I told what day the inspector would come around again to collect the form. We're thrilled with the roof and the quality of work, but it would've been less of a headache to have a lot of this information up front without having to keep asking, since I'm unfamiliar with the roof process. I also had to email the general DLS development email, as the project manager was not responding to some questions and concerns as quickly as I would've liked. I know she probably had a million things going on, but it felt like I got a response much quicker once I emailed through the general company email. This was not a cheap project, and I feel like this company lacks clear communication, but their workers and work are absolutely outstanding.

I finally chose Mega Power and I am glad everything went faster than I expected. The day that I received and signed the contract with Mega Power to the day that it's on for use is about a month and a half. Mega Power took care of all of SMUD requirements, Elk Grove city permit, and inspection. Here is what I think about Mega Power: Reasonable price, you do not have to wait too long for the job to be done, and the panels and electrical wiring were done professionally. I highly recommend Mega Power.

We live in Oakland, California…read more After soliciting bids through EnergySage from multiple companies, we got so turned off by commission-inspired sales tactics from other companies (NB many on the site have commission-based sales teams that promise the world at great prices, but then when it's contract time, everything changes drastically due to the disconnect between those promises and the reality of each site--this happened to us and our neighbor with Solar Optimum), we were on the verge of abandoning this project, when I decided to give German (pronounced gair-mon, but he also goes by Gary) and his company Mega Power a try. He apparently let go of his sales team years ago for these reasons (I see problems too from earlier Yelp reviews). What an amazingly refreshing difference! This is not a multi-tier sales organization. German owns the company, provides honest bids, and came to our home for an on-site inspection before providing his actual bid. He also worked directly with his team on our installation. That does mean that he can be personally busy, but he always got back to me and I admittedly can be kinda demanding, especially with endless questions as I try to wrap my mind around new things. We went with LG Neon Panels, SolarEdge Inverters, 2 LG Chem batteries, and the StorEdge multimode inverter so our system can operate when the grid is down (thanks PG&E). German worked with me to be sure our system works as desired (despite a lot of misinformation, including from the manufacturers who are still working out this cutting-edge technology). And their installation was beautiful! We have a very clean aesthetic and these guys were really impressive--even painting various pipes and what not to match our house. They also upgraded our panel to 200 amps, installed the critical load subpanel, and pulled all the permits, worked with PG&E to change the power line to our house as part of the panel upgrade, etc. I definitely recommend German.
