American Airlines operates their American Eagle brand out of Gerald R. Ford International Airport. They only have one small ticket counter in the far right hand side of the main terminal. I had a flight out of Grand Rapids to Chicago O'Hare International Airport - scheduled for 7:30 pm. They recommended to me to try to get to Chicago on an earlier flight due to all of the flight delays from the storms moving across the midwest. They got me into a great aisle seat on an earlier flight. While it remains to be seen what time my earlier flight actually departs - thank you ladies at the American Eagle ticket counter for being thoughtful and pro-active! read more

Every single time I fly American something is wrong. Standing here at the airport, American is telling us out departure time is 2:52. The plane just pulled up (2:32) and hasn't even let anyone off yet now (2:37pm). This is after an hour and a half delay. American assured the plane would depart by 2:52.. it's now 2:42 and kids still getting off. 2:43 pilot gets off.. I bet we aren't leaving at 2:52.. By far the worst customer service I've ever received. We got to the airport in plenty of time. We noticed a long line at the desk that was moving painfully slow. We had already checked in online and just needed to check a couple bags. We went to the kiosk and it allowed my husband to check a bag, but not me. When we asked the ticket agent, she shooed us to the back of the customer service line instead of just adding the checked bag to my husband's flight. We had already waited in a kiosk line for 20 minutes and then had to sit in the main line for over an hour and ended up missing our flight. The ticket agents did nothing to help us rebook or even apologize for the delay. We missed a day of our vacation because these employees were beyond inept at their job. Zero urgency. Zero awareness of what was going on. Zero empathy or people skills. We have avoided American Airlines at all costs before this because this is the type of customer service we've read about. The only reason we had a flight booked with them was because we were with a group and the travel agent booked us. Never again. read more

I am usually not one to leave reviews about things and I didn't even have yelp until now, but I downloaded it just because of this. DONT fly american out of this airport unless u want to wait in line at the baggage drop off for over an hour to then have to carry all of your checked baggage to the gate. They had two workers at the desk that were on the phone the entire time where it got to the point where I was about to carry my bags onto the tarmac and load my bags myself. I also probably could've just taken the train to get to my destination instead because despite "being outside of the checked bag window," my plane was still delayed by an hour which means i'm also going to miss my next flight at the layover destination. Nice employees in the Oregon airport.. But their baggage policies are absolutely ridiculous. On the website, the baggage rules posted are not specific enough. I had purchased a regular economy ticket. I was prepared to pay around 50 to 70 for my 2 checked bags. Upon getting to the counter the clerk tells me that I do not have access to any overhead bins. So i have to check my carry on also. Apparently the ticket I had purchased meant that I didn't get a carry on. I was not informed at all about this on the wrbsite. So you can only imagine my surprise when the total for 3 checked bags was over 200! I will never be flying with them again. read more

Legacy airlines are going out of business for good reason. Medical emergency forced us to reschedule flights to the next day. Had to cancel 2 flight journey GRR to LAX and rebook GRR to ORD only. After a credit they still charged an additional $600 just for a one hour flight! No availability to LAX so we paid a separate carrier to get to LAX. This airline receives tax breaks and subsidies from us, and they still can't get it together! read more

I normally don't fly American and this past trip confirmed why. 80 minutes on the tarmac leaving Grand Rapids and now sitting on the tarmac upon arrival. They are saying 30 minutes to get us to the gate because the have a skeleton crew. Not impressed at all. If this is what we have to deal with now maybe I'll drive for the next trip. This is the absolute WORST airline. Pay the extra money for a safer and more comfortable flight. I flew from Chicago to Grand Rapids in a thunder storm last year. The turbulence was so bad that we were flying up and out of our seats. Our seatbelts kept us from going very far, but you get the idea. The flight attendant was holding on for dear life, and meanwhile the captain said not ONE WORD. Our flight should have been canceled or delayed in order to ensure safety of all on board, but instead American Airlines decided to put profits ahead of their patrons. My son booked his ticket home for Christmas himself on American Airlines through my Travelocity account. He didn't know he had to change the name in the booking. He got to the airport. American refused to change the name because it was booked through Travelocity. They sold him a ticket for a flight 14 hours later and charged him a surcharge for buying the ticket at the airport. Then, when the plane landed in Charlotte (on route to Grand Rapids) it sat on the tarmac after landing just long enough so that he missed his connecting flight, the last flight of the evening. The flight attendants made absolutely no attempt to aid him, none. They rebooked him for the next morning, leaving him stranded in the airport. He asked for a hotel or meals but they said it wasn't their fault. They gave him nothing. I remember the days when the airlines actually treated people with respect. But really, with all the lip service about being safe with covid, stranding a kid coming home from college in an airport for 14 hours on one end and then over night in the connection seems egregiously dangerous and downright cruel. Booked our flights for travel to New Orleans 12/28 for our daughters wedding dress & venue viewings. AA staff took upon them selves, in the day of departure, not once but twice cx'd our flights, never speaking to us by phone. We missed out in the once in a life time event of the wedding dress viewing on that Friday and again after our daughter rescheduled, on Saturday. Plus two of the wedding venues. We tried to understand the reasoning of weather. But we became aware that the 2nd flight was cx due to pilot/staff was not available. However our luggage went on the flight to Chicago, the very night that we too should have flown out on Friday evening after they rescheduled our Friday morning flight. AA staff could only find acceptable compensation of apologizing for any inconveniences they may have caused. Our daughters very important day of planning events for her wedding has a value. Some of which is priceless and will never be gotten back! We lost out on a non refundable expensive nights stay in a condo & two days of important, valuable events for our daughters up coming wedding. While our luggage was in Chicago and we had to spend the time that we did have with our daughter undoing the mess that AA staff contributed too. And the customer service reps could only find in their guidelines, simple words of apology. Words are cheap and actions speak loudly! We the paying customers putting forth the high costs to fly, picking our seating and depend on our air carrier to get us to our destination that we paid for without delay or any misfortune. AA has forgotten about the fact that we the paying customers help pay their staff their daily wages. This very staff that contributed to our awful experience with the once in a life time events. AA has forgotten about the value of their customers who paid for and depended on a air service to be completely rendered pain free and it was not! And they only found an apology of words for compensation of what they robbed us from. They still had our money received for services paid for that were far below acceptable. So future flying customers beware! Best to fly with Delta or another air carrier that still have a higher value on their paying customers. As they will work harder with their customer service and do right by you. While thus far AA do not. Actions do speak louder than words! We the paying customers deserve to be compensated for the service that AA staff completely interrupted and forcing us to accept the lowered standards and a few words of apology. They Took my bag into American valet .and yelled at me when I went to go retrieve my belongings no one is helpful only one guy when I was getting in the plane helped load my luggage The planes are out of date. Small and cramped. I've. Never flown this air line before I'm used to jet blue. Honestly the worst flight I've ever had. The lady didn't even ask my name. Told me she would bring me my luggage she's said in her words it will be the one left over. And I'm like but you don't even know who I am .I'm typing this as they are making me wait outside gate b8. Stick with Delta!! We had a flight at 3:37pm, it was canceled "due to weather" and pushed to 8:58pm, then that was one was canceled "due to weather". Plenty of other airlines were flying out with no trouble but out flight just kept getting bumped. Our flight gets canceled again and we have to get an over priced hotel to sleep in by the airport until our new flight at 5:40am. We get up at 3:30am in the morning to get to our flight on time, go through security and board the plane.....now I sit here as they have already completely turned off the plane because of a gauge not working. The plane did not reset and so we sit waiting for maintenance to come fix our plane. The pilot chuckles and says we may have to deboard if another plane needs to move into our place. We sit, patiently waiting, to return to Atlanta where our experience with American Airlines was equally as terrible. I will stick with Delta moving forward. read more

If I could give it negative stars I would. First the check-in counter took forever. My bag for my flight in was 70 lbs and I wasn't charged due to being in the military. My flight out from here my bag was 65 lbs and I was told it had to be 50 lbs so we unload 15 lbs and strap the stuff to our carry on bags (same weight on the plane) and they charged me $25 for my checked bag. This is why I hate American Airlines and the Gerald R Ford airport. I will be surprised if my bag makes it to California. Good luck to all who fly this airline at this airport. read more

If it were possible to give a business negative stars, I would do it. My journey started at Orange County Airport in Orange County, California. I was traveling with my partner and our 5 month old baby. Our plane was delayed a half hour due to weather conditions affecting the inbound plane. That's fine, it happens. So we got put on the next available flight to Dallas, which was not too bad of a wait. We land in Dallas, had to go from terminal A to B which you can only get to by shuttle, and missed our connector to Grand Rapids by 1 minute. 10 people from our plane, and 32 people total (we found out later) missed this connector because the pilot refused to wait 10 minutes. I have waited in Detroit for 30 minutes for one person before, on a different airline. So we go to the customer service line, wait in line an hour to talk to an agent and surprise!!!! No more flights out of Dallas for Grand Rapids that day. A flippant customer service rep directed us to a Holiday Inn. What happened to their One World Alliance partnership with other airlines? It didn't seem to matter that we had an infant with us. He wasn't willing to book us on another airline to get us out of there. What we did get is a lot of attitude and an I don't give a shit attitude. Well, we can't go anywhere without our car seat. So we were told to go back to another gate and talk to a gate agent there. So we took the shuttle to a different part of the airport only to wait in another hour long line to be told that we had to go to yet another location to find our car seat. We spoke to 9 different people each one contradicting what the last person said. By this time, several hours had gone by. So we are now waiting outside for the shuttle (no car seat) and we wait for an hour and half. We try calling three times, no one picks up. It is pouring raining and humid. We are now stuck at the airport. It is 10 at night, I am running out of diapers and my infant hasn't slept most of the day. We end up at our gate, spreading a blanket out under the airport chairs and putting my baby on the filthy airport floor to try to get her to sleep. Our plane didn't leave till almost 1 pm the next day. I was so traumatized by the day, I was in tears at one in the morning looking at my precious baby on the floor. The bottom line is, no one at AA gave a goddamn about ANYTHING. Not one person went the extra mile for us, or even cared about our baby. It was completely disgusting. They lost me as a customer forever. It is unforgivable to treat a baby this way. Think long and hard before you book with these losers. read more
