Never having been in an Amazon Fresh store, I have now shopped at the Encino Amazon Fresh 3 times since it opened. I was a long time customer of the Ralphs that had been in this location. After Ralphs closed, seemed like it took FOREVER for Amazon Fresh to open, so I had high expectations to see what they had done to remodel the store.
After three shopping experiences there, I have to say that my first impression remains: this Amazon Fresh store is soulless. What used to be a pleasant shopping experience in a well stocked, friendly neighborhood store where the employees had worked for years and you would run into friends and neighbors, now just feels like a store I'll go into only when necessary and for limited items. To do a major shopping trip to stock my kitchen and pantry, I'll continue going to Ralphs at Hazeltine.
The store itself is very plain and stark - almost Costco warehouse-like. Produce department is at the entrance. Because of the "self-pay via a phone app as you shop," all produce is priced by the piece or is prepackaged, so no produce is weighed. As a result, the items sold the produce department feels very over packaged. I chose to shop the old fashioned way, knowing I'd have to unload my items for someone else to ring up. Produce seemed fresh.
Once I started to stroll through the aisles to get to know the store layout and see what brands they carry, I was really disappointed. Many shelves are empty and the brand selections are significantly more limited than what the former Ralphs carried. Prices seem high, and the in house brands (Whole Foods 365 and Plenty) have very limited selections. Do not shop here if you are someone who wants to compare brands and prices, or if you're looking for a good selection of in-house, lower cost brands.
I had been hoping to put together a picnic meal for a night at the Hollywood Bowl, so I made may to the salad bar/hot bar area. Again, the self-serve items are priced by the size of the container, not weight. I selected a couple of salads - one did not have enough left to fill my container. I told an employee there was no more of the particular salad, he nodded and disappeared. While I stood waiting at the salad bar, he returned, and started working on something else. I let a few minutes pass, then asked him again if he could refill the salad. He grunted an acknowledgment, disappeared into the back and returned to say there was no more.
My takeaway from my Amazon Fresh experiences is that the store is designed for people looking for basic prepared foods, or those who want to buy milk and do an Amazon return in the same building. If you are someone who loves cooking as I do, this is not the place to shop. The overall selection at the store is not great. Employees don't go out of their way to help customers. The entire experience was just "meh." When I asked the checker why the shelves seemed so empty, he told me the grand opening promotional coupons ($20 off if you spend $40) have been driving sales faster than they can restock shelves. I can't help but wonder what will happen to sales at this store once those coupons disappear. I'll keep driving a bit farther from my home to shop at Ralphs where I can count on stocked shelves, an excellent selection of products and brands, and employees who seem to care. read more
