I'm trying to shop more sustainably and repair or reuse things instead of automatically tossing them into the trash or donating them where I can't guarantee they don't end up in a landfill in another country. After finding some secondhand merino wool sweaters (naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and don't have to wash frequently!) and forgetting to put them in a mesh laundry bags before tossing them into the washing machine on delicate, I found myself the owner of lovely merino wool sweaters, each with a new hole in them. I went online to search sweater repair and found this local independent business. Give Sue a call, schedule an appointment, and bring your sweaters here for a consultation. She'll be honest about what she can or can't do, the estimated time for repair (She's popular because she's one of the few with the skill and competence), and the price you pay in cash on pick up. She called me when they were ready (which was around the estimated time) and showed me each repair. You can't really tell unless you're looking for the repairs up close. You can flip the item inside out to look for the where she has taken yarn from the sweater to use to reweave the hole - NOT mending with thread. See the photos I uploaded for an idea of the quality of the work. It's not cheap, but I felt worth it to do my part for the land and support a small business. I had a very thin merino wool cardigan that had several pinpoint moth holes and she told me she could repair it, but it would be quite costly so was it worth it? I'm thinking of using it to try out the "visible mending" with roots in the Japanese tradition of sachiko. Also, she said she wouldn't be able to help with a velvet dress with a few pinpoint moth holes. So, I need to take care of a moth problem in my closet. read more

A cashmere cardigan had about a thumb-sized hole in a place you couldn't hide. Amazing Reweaving was able to completely fix it! You can't even see where the hole was from the front unless you hold it up to the light and even then you'd only see two slightly denser areas where she had to add the yarns from the back. It looks perfect and has given my cardigan continued life. Reweaving is a pretty specialized skill and not everyone can do it well but she did a truly amazing job at a very reasonable price and I was without my cardigan for just a week. I have used Amazing Reweaving's services for a few years now. I manage a custom tailor shop and we send her customer garments worth up to about $5k each sometimes. Sue's work is of exceptional quality and her prices are very reasonable. I think the best one we sent her was a pocket mostly torn off a jacket by a client's dog -- several holes, real ugly. Now, reweaving is not MAGIC, but I had to be within 2 feet of that coat to tell there had ever been any work done to it, and this was with a large-scale patterned fabric! In addition to her high quality of finished work, Sue will tell you when repairs simply aren't going to turn out well for whatever reason. To my mind this is equally as valuable. Trust Sue with you garments. Ship them to her if you have to -- I do (send her a return tag also). This is, after all, not work that needs to be done locally, it is meticulous, niche-type work that needs to be done by the most skillful person available. I had a small hole in my tux pants and took them to my cleaners/alteration place to repair. When I picked them up, they had done a terrible job and made a mess of the hole. I went to another alteration place that gave me Sue's information at Amazing Reweaving. I called her. Disappointed!! I took my two vintage St. John sweaters with small holes, located in very visible areas, to be repaired. The price was $87.00 cash for both which seemed reasonable. However, when the sweaters were repaired and ready I could not believe how poor the workmanship was. I informed her that the repairs were so visible that I will reluctantly donate them to Goodwill. She then informed me that she had previously alerted me that the repairs may not be perfect. Had I understood this warning I would not have left the sweaters with her. She has a very thick accent. She then informed me that the two items would look better after dry cleaning. I had them dry cleaned and no change. I debated whether to post this review, however, when I went back to Yelp to look at the two (2) "five star" reviews that were posted, I noticed something that had not previously caught my eye located at the bottom of the Amazing Reweaving Yelp page. SIX REVIEWS NOT RECOMMENDED BY YELP . Had I read the deleted reviews by Yelp I would never have taken my sweaters to this company. BEST WEAVING PLACE IN HOUSTON!!!! This place was recommended to me by our local alteration shop in Pearland to repair small hole in my suit's sleeve, but since Bellaire was never conveniently on my way, I thought that all French weaving shops would be similar and I dropped the jacket off at some other place downtown Houston. What a mistake it was - even though I was promised weaving technique I ended up with an ordinary patch. Discouraged by this negative experience, I was about to throw my suit way, but decided to give the lady in Bellaire a try. When she saw my jacket she quickly determined the mistakes the other place made and said that she can repair my piece. When I returned to pick it up, I had to really look closely to see where the repair was done, needless to say I was happy with her work and I recommend her shop to anyone who needs weaving services. read more
