I followed Rachel Saxon from another salon to AMAZ for Hair and I think we both might have found our "forever home." ;) After almost two of years of dealing with an amateur colorist at a nearby large salon (er ub :/), particularly when it comes to my crazy bright pinks and reds, I found Rachel! Yay! Gone are the days of super fast fading and bleeding, and continuous damage to my hair (the first time I saw Rachel, we had to cut 6 inches off my long hair)! Rachel is a true pro. This gal knows what she's doing and her fun personality is just icing. And no worries...she can do "normal" just as well! This quant salon, located in Rosedale, is [literally] a hidden gem (can be a bit hard to find of first visit), has a beautiful lounge area, lots of natural lighting, sells amazing hair care products (including the full line of Kerastase), and uses only the best products in house (including Wella color). It really is amAz-ing! The salon owner, Ava, has been in the industry for years and could not possibly be more sweet or adorable. You can just feel the warmth flow throughout the salon she has created. No gossip, bickering atmosphere here! Simply serene. Makes each appointment even that much more enjoyable. There are some things that I'm afraid to purchase a Groupon for- Lasik (only got one pair of eyes), dental work (my best friend is a dentist), or waxing services (ouch). But hair? Hair always grows back, so I thought it'd be safe to get highlights done while saving a ton of money. I read reviews about how talented Rachel is, but she was fully booked the weekend I was in town, so I decided to go with another stylist (who shall remain unnamed, but if it's any indication, she left the salon 2 wks after my appointment). Big mistake. Big. HUGE. I did not walk outta there feeling like Julia Roberts post-makeover in Pretty Woman. I asked for blond balayage highlights, which I knew would be difficult to achieve without several repeat sessions because of my dark hair. What I got was brassy, orangey streaks that were awkwardly placed, instead of the natural sun-kissed highlights I was looking for. I made no attempt to conceal my anger, and she did tone the color a bit, but after 5 hours in the salon chair, I still left dissatisfied. Rachel offered to rebook me for a complimentary color correction, and I really appreciated that she wanted to make things right. 3 months later, I FINALLY got the chance to return and fix my hair with Rachel, who was the stylist I'd originally wanted to see anyway. She and Sophia (the receptionist) were SO lovely and fun. Over a heart-to-heart chat sesh lasting a few hours, we really got to know some intimate things about each other- Tinder nightmares, family history, future dreams. They even ordered lunch for me because I was there for a while, and God knows I get a little hangry without being fed. Rachel trimmed off my split ends and worked with me on getting the color as close as possible to the photos I brought in. I'll still need a few more treatments to get my hair blonder (I just wanna know if they have more fun, okay?), but I was happy with the results. read more

I've been going to see Deklynd for the past few years. For anyone with curly hair, you must go to Deklynd. You will not have a Christmas tree on your head within two weeks. He really knows what he's doing and understands how to cut curly hair. Outside of wonderful haircuts, this is a very pleasant place to go. Nice interior and everyone's friendly. You know you've found a cool place to get your hair done: A) When they wrap your head up in a shower cap to save you from the torrential downpour of rain that would otherwise destroy your new do! And B) Then they take your picture on their cell phone in said shower cap for posterity. Yeah, that's my kinda place. Deklynd and his trusty sidekick, Griffin, rock the joint and your hair. They are lots of fun and I love them. Super cuts (not supercuts, no offense to the cheapskates) and beautiful highlights. Yeah, it's pricey but honey, you're worth it. And I've never left with wet locks...can't say that for every salon in town. You'd think that was a no brainer..hmm, not so much. Just watch out for some of the regs who think that chair literally has their name on it. Going to Ava for 12 years isn't enough of a positive recommendation. People (still) regularly stop me in random public places and compliment my hair. I don't know how, but the cut has longevity --it looks good from the minute I leave the salon until I come back ten weeks later. It is a great benefit to have bang trims included in between full cuts too and that extends the life of my cut. The products and salon treatments from Kerastase are some of the best treatments I have ever used. The salon has a comfortable, be yourself feel. Only a few stylists (no more than 4 at any one time) helps to ensure that you are recognized and treated like a valuable client by everyone in the salon. Cost is "boutique pricing" but the service is very comprehensive where you walk out totally polished for the day. Really great central location too! read more

I love this salon and Rachel and Sophia are amazing. I've always wanted to try something new with my hair but fear of the unknown and internet horror stories held me back. When I finally decided to do so, I'm glad I came across amaz for hair on groupon. I know, I know, for someone who is afraid of a big hair change why would I be on groupon... I love good deals also :D I'm glad I tried out groupon, otherwise I would have never came here. Seeing as this was my first time doing something to my hair other than my annual haircut or occasional conditioning treatments, I requested a consultation before my actual appointment which both Rachel and Sophia had no problem with. I met with Rachel and told her my concerns: virgin hair, afraid the balayage treatment would fry my hair if it was too close to the roots, didn't want a drastic hair color, etc. She was completely understanding and receptive to all my concerns and assures me it would be fine. The day of the appointment, I was nervous (I know it's just hair but I'm deeply attached to it) and had a few moments of hesitation and second guessing throughout the process but the end result was great. Rachel knows what she is doing, I have thick wavy hair and she painted the streaks at the right places, didn't go up to the roots as that was my biggest and main fear, and at the end, I I had beautiful bronze/light brown streaks. Also, she is one of the few stylists who dried and styled my hair in under 30 minutes...normally I sit in the chair for a couple hours while they dry and style my hair. I loved the final product and have referred many of my friends to them. I wish I could go to them more often but it's a little pricey as all salons but if I ever am considering another change or new look, I will be back here. read more

I've tried a lot of different stylist, and I can definitely say that I've found one that I can stick with! Rachel was amazing! She did a great job on my balayage. I left feeling beautiful, which is exactly how you want to feel leaving a salon. She wasn't pushy about products (i ended up purchasing a shampoo), gave great advice, and didn't harp on me for dying my own hair (it's easy... hahaha). Wow, just wow! I love Ava and her staff so much. I have been seeing Ava for about seven years now, and she is truly a hair expert. My mom offices upstairs from her salon and recommended Ava to me because my hair is super fine, and Ava has a tremendous amount of experience working with different beauty issues. Ava has so many recommendations for how to make my hair look more full. The way she cuts it is so flattering and so much better than any other stylist I have ever seen. She also did my hair and makeup for my wedding and used hair extensions. It was so beautiful - even better than I anticipated. My makeup lasted all day. It looked great in photos and was still in good shape at the end of the night. Ava recommended vitamins for my hair that are the only thing (other than pregnancy for nine months!) that have improved the thickness of my hair. I've just had the best! My hair looks and feels great- and I have difficult combination dry/oily frizzy curls. Ava at Amaz has introduced me to a product line that suits my difficult hair (you gorgeous straight hair girls make it look easy); products that work on me-so far so good Kerastase... I really really wanted to like this place and my stylist but it just didn't work out I purchased a Groupon for balayage, haircut, and I also added on a base color The balayage - she destroyed my hair The base color - was dull and boring and $80 to cover about an inch of roots - I had to get my color done again immediately after The haircut - the worst I've had in my life My stylist told me she would give me subtle layers, what I ended up with is nothing close to subtle She gave me the choppiest layers, the bottom layer is about 4-5 inches longer then the next layer. I've been growing out my hair for years and I think I'm going to have to chop it all off and start over because of this terrible haircut I purchased this Groupon because of all the great reviews this place got, I wish I could have added a good one All in all it was tremendous waste of time and money :( read more

I went to Amaz for Hair yesterday afternoon for the first time ever. I was Becca's very FIRST customer (at this salon!). I will wear that badge of honor proudly! :-) Becca has taken care of my head of hair for over 10 months or so -- yes, I followed her to Amaz. I'm not a stalker, just SMART! Over this time frame, she has cut my hair, permed my hair, colored my hair and done balayage hair painting on my hair, not to mention always giving great advice on products, styling, etc.. Becca is an artist, on many levels, and my VERY favorite hair stylist in Austin. I can guarantee that in Becca's care, you will walk out of the salon holding your head high, strutting with a little more confidence, and noticing your cheeks are hurting from the smile on your face. I would be remiss if I didn't mention what a comfortable and friendly salon Amaz for Hair is. The owner, Ava, is lovely, welcoming and extremely in tune with her customers and their comfort. I will be calling her soon to set up my next appointment. I asked for dark brown with no red in it, and definitely Framesi. I've been going to Katrina since I moved to Austin 9 years ago. Not only is she cool and funny, she does great hair no matter what I've asked her to do. Lots of times I don't ask for anything in particular, I just tell her to do "whatever" and I always leave with my hair looking fabulous. She's a good and careful colorist, and her cuts grow out gracefully until the next appointment. I would recommend her to anyone, regardless of whether they're adventurous or conservative, because I've been both over the years. I'd follow her anywhere (and I have!) If you're looking for someone who is calm and knowledgeable, who won't push you into a look you aren't comfortable with but can offer an expert consultation if you're looking to make a change, or someone you can trust if you've made enough decisions for the day, you'll love Katrina. Was in thr chair for over 3 hours for an all over color and a hair cut. My hair is completly uneven and she had to keep going shorter to fix it. The color is more black than brown and i thought she was extremely unprofessional. I will def never be back. read more

You know you're with the best when your haircut grows out and has still retained great shape. Also when the grays start to show and the roots are barely noticeable because the highlights were done so well the gray just blends. I've been going to Colleen for 3 years now and love her! I've followed her from her previous salon to Amaz for Hair. I highly recommend her. She really listens to what you want, and works hard to deliver. I don't like to go too often, so she suggested an enzyme treatment that works very well, and allows a natural grow out, so I only go every four months or so. It's perfect for my hectic mom-life. The salon itself is cute, and centrally located. My only complaint is that the washing station is cramped, and the drying station is awkwardly placed so you have to keep shifting anytime someone tries to go through a doorway. I can't remember if they have wine, but they should if they don't. I would follow Colleen anywhere, and would advise anyone to go to her. read more

Jessica Santillan is THE BEST stylist I have ever had. She is very professional and very experienced. She has always given me exactly what I want every time I sit in her chair. I came to her four years ago because my hair had been ruined by an idiot as VC and she transformed my fried damaged blonde hair into beautiful healthy blonde hair. She is the only stylist I have come across that really knows how to treat blondes. She takes such care when dying my hair that I leave with the beautiful blonde color that I love and my hair looks healthy. She is not only FABULOUS at what she does but she is a really great person. Got my hair done here last month. The staff was AMAZING! Such nice, personable, beautiful people. I was recommended by my best friend to this place, and hadn't had my hair done for so long. When I explained what I wanted, they literally said "this will be so fun!" She did everything exactly how I wanted plus more. Very easy to make an appointment- I got one the same day that I called. I went to McKalla at Amaz for a cut. I have had good hair cuts before, but I have not had good service to go along with the cut. I always felt sort of ignored, treated like I didn't know anything about my own hair, pressured to get services that I really couldn't afford to get done. I left Amaz with exactly what I wanted, feeling good, and weeks later, I still love my hair. I can't stop touching it when it's down, I take the time to style it on the weekends, instead of letting it air dry. She highlighted my hair in such a way that there is no obvious root line, and the color enhances my natural color. Both Ava and Brenda are skilled at cutting hair, so it grows out beautifully. I almost never write reviews but the time, I feel like it is needed. I had a horrible experience with Rachel, the so called " master of color". She was very rude, aggressive, did not care one bit about customer satisfaction and her pricing was a rip off with very poor results. I was supposed to get partial highlights and while I was explaining what I wanted, she rushed to mix the colors and said" well it's too late I mixed the colors and we'll find out how this will turn". She was extremely rough with my hair, almost seemed like she was pulling it on purpose. While washing my hair, she was doing it in such a forceful manner and totally not gentle, and managed to get the color in my eyes. Extremely unprofessional and very sloppy. My hair looked exactly the same before and after, just wasted $170 out the window and ruined my mood that day. read more

I originally found Colleen through her previous salon Elan. I went in wanting to make my hair blonde "like it used to be" before those pesky gray hairs. Colleen took lots of time to make sure we were on the same page and tried several different processes to get it right. Despite the challenges, she remained patient and pleasant and got me looking great! She gave me a great haircut too! My review (for wedding/special event hair) is about a year late, but this should in no way be construed as any less than a glowing endorsement! Ava and Brenda did such a fantastic job on the hair for my three bridesmaids, my mother and myself; juggling all of us was no easy feat. In addition, they did everything on site at the hotel downtown, for far less than other salons were going to charge me. Because theirs is a small salon, this meant they basically gave up half a day of business. Their professionalism, preparation and attention to detail were excellent - we all have very different hair and neuroses, yet everyone looked equally fantastic. Ava's technique is sophisticated and classy; no fear of "prom night" looks with her. She spent significant time with me before the wedding reviewing my preferences and trying out different looks. Not to mention, in perhaps one of the more challenging situations she has had for a wedding, my future husband was hospitalized early on our wedding day, which made for lots of tension as Ava and Brenda went about their work. Ava's sweet demeanor and encouraging words really helped me look and feel better. She graciously rearranged her schedule to do my hair again, a week later, so that my husband and I could retake our wedding photos. When I get rich, I will have Ava do my hair for EVERY occasion! read more
