Bombay Frankies - Crispy butter chicken Frankie with egg wash

TLDR: Surprisingly spicy Indian street food in the maze that is The Kanata Centrum. Tasty Frankie…read moreRolls, very flavourful. Bombay Frankies is a chain that started in Newmarket, ON. It's a partnership between famous chef Vikram Vij and Eat Up Canada Inc. All the recipes were created by Chef Vij. This location in Kanata is currently the only location in Ottawa. There are several locations in the GTA. I'm rarely out in Kanata anymore, but my husband and I were out there so I pulled out my UberEats app in search of nearby deals and Bombay Frankies popped up with a BOGO (buy one get one free) deal. Bombay Frankies had been on my list of places to try, so I was in luck. I got the Masala Chicken Frankie ($12.99 - with the deal we got 2 for this price). It was cubes of chicken, onion, tomatoes, and cucumbers covered in a tangy and spicy sauce, wrapped in a paratha. I was pleasantly surprised by how spicy the wrap was. It had a good amount of kick. The wrap had excellent flavour, but was a bit too wet and messy to eat for me. I also found the paratha a bit greasy. Service was very friendly and welcoming. The man who gave me my order saw me taking pictures of the restaurant and asked me if it was my first time there. I said yes, I was excited to give them a try. He encouraged me to write a review on Google, lol. It's a fast food type restaurant. There's seating to eat in. They have a Freestyle fountain drink dispenser where you can mix flavours. I was given a coupon to fill out a survey for a free fountain drink next time. They also have cans of Thumbs Up and they sell mango lassi too. This location is in the Kanata Centrum. I hate this plaza. It's a tangled maze with sub-plazas within the larger complex. There is free parking though. (73)

Was going to a Sens game with my dad ( Go Sens Go) and stopped here beforehand for dinner…read more I have had very good Frankies in my life and this almost meets expectations for sure. Sauce is good, overall great tasting but wasn't anything mind blowing. Had a bowl and frankie. I think the bowl is better value and tastier/more filling. Would get the bowl again. A little on the expensive side for the frankie, I think the bowl is average at 12$. Staff is new so can't be too hard on them, they were very helpful. Nice large restaurant, clean bathrooms. Will definitely be back.

They specialize in take out of authentic food from the southernmost state of India called Kerala …read more The cuisine is predominantly based on spices and coconut . Coconut is used in various forms like grated , milked and toasted in various dishes . Quickly to pros and cons 1. Authentic malabar cuisine : remember guys this is where black pepper used to be exported to all over the world , the spice capital . The taste is authentic 2. Parking : strip mall , ample space , located next to Zola's 3. Readiness : most dishes will be turned around in under 30 mins Cons 1. No dine in , they do have space for it and if they start they'll sure be a tough competition for rest who offer similar fare 2. No desserts : malabar had option of innumerable snacks and desserts , all they sell is fried fritters made of coconut and jaggery All in all this is a great introduction for you to authentic cuisine .

Malabar House just opened their own space in December 2018. I overheard the owner talking to…read moreanother customer and said they used to operate out of a convenience store. I believe it was the Kash n Karry in Kanata, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyway, now they have their own restaurant in a strip mall in Bells Corners. They serve South Indian food and it's pretty good. Coming from Toronto, I've been spoiled by the likes of Babu (2 locations) and the Samosa King where you can get 5 samosas for $1 and lunch specials for $4.99 or less and everything is delicious. Since this is Ottawa though, the prices at Malabar are a bit higher, but still very reasonable. The lunch specials are about $9.99 and samosas are about $1.50 each. I got the 3 meat and 2 veg lunch special for $9.99. I believe the selection changes daily. The day that I went the meat curries were mutton, fish, and butter chicken. The vegetarian curries were mixed vegetables, and a plantain and bean curry. The curries came with basmati rice. I also got a bottle of water for $1. The mutton curry was my favourite. It was the spiciest of the lot, and very flavorful. I liked that it was boneless and lean. The butter chicken was lean boneless chicken breast and very creamy. The fish curry was also mild, but a bit spicier than the butter chicken. I liked that it didn't taste fishy. It was made with flakey white fish and I was happy that there were no bones! The vegetable curry had potatoes, peas, green beans, and carrots. It was very mild, but still had good flavour. The beans and plantain dish was a first for me. It was interesting, much drier than the other dishes and less flavourful to me. It was not bad, just not my favourite of the bunch. The rice was nice and fluffy. Service was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is mostly for takeout, but they do have 3 tables which seat 4 people each, so you can eat in if you want, which is what I did. The place looks very utilitarian, no real decor to speak of, so it's not like a date night destination, lol, but the food is good. When I was done I was given a small sample of dessert to try. It was a sweet lentil soup. I love South Indian snacks or short eats, so I decided to get a chicken roll to go, but they only had mutton rolls, samosas and fish cutlets in the display cabinet. I was told that they were frying up a new batch of chicken cutlets, so I decided to wait and get one of those. I think it was $1.50. It smelled so good that it didn't make it home because I ate it in the car, lol. It's basically potatoes, chicken and spices rolled in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. It was super oily/greasy, but tasted good, although I wouldn't have minded more chicken, but for the price, I can't complain too much. I'm looking forward to coming back to try the rolls, vadas, bondas and other treats. There was a couple there when I was there and they ordered some vadas but they were disappointed when the vadas arrived as they were not the type of vada they were expecting. They got the smooth fluffy vadas that look like donuts, but I think they were expecting the dense crunchy textured vada that look like hockey pucks (sorry, I don't know the correct name for the different types of vada), anyway the owner told them those are only made on Saturdays. They have milk hoppers too! They're called Appam on the menu :) The place is in a strip mall in Bells Corners, so lots of free parking. Same strip mall as the Scottish and Irish store and the Nepean Optometric Clinic.
