If you are in Fall River and looking to stock up on tasty Portuguese foods you can go to Portugalia if you want trendy, but go to Amaral's if you want delicious things at a great price without the fuss. The rotisserie chicken that they have on Saturdays is delicious, even my picky eating five year old was all about it. I also love their marinade that they have at their meat counter, it's like a piri piri/chorizo sauce. You can buy meat already marinating in it or a container of it for undere $2. You just have to ask at the meat counter. I also like to stock up on my Azores butter here. The cheese counter is a lovely sight. My aunt loves the St Jorge cheese. They cut it right off of the wheel for you. I'm obsessed with the fresh cheese that they carry from Manny's Dairy Farm. The large container generally does not last the weekend once my husband and I dig into it. Like fresh mozzarella, but better. The piece de resistance for me is their Portuguese corn bread-- broa. If you've never had it, it's a corn and rye bread (not at all like Southern cornbread). When you are headed to the checkout here they have it towards the front. I don't know if it's like this everyday, but on Saturday mornings it is literally still hot when you grab one. Super fresh and super delicious. It's the perfect compliment to that fresh cheese! I've been coming here since forever due to how close I live to this amazing store. When I was younger my grandma (babcia) and I would walk the block to get to amarals and buy lots of bread rolls. At this point in my life they are like family to me and my family. I know they work hard even at five in the morning because I can smell the chicken being cooked. My brother is best friends with the workers there and they are amazing to us. It is my favorite place to go to for a therapy shopping session. The memories I have made here will stick with me forever. Yes my family and the owner family are relatively close in friendship even without that aspect I would still love this place. I make it a point to come every once in a while sometimes with a little friend in training and everyone loves everyone. One really rude experience! I've been going to Amaral's Central Market for several years. I live about an hour away and when I'm in the area I would make a point to stop in and stock up on Portuguese essentials. The store is great but on my most recent visit, one of their employees Julio at the cheese/meat counter was extremely rude and kept arguing with me about where I was standing in line. There was no one in line when I got to the cheese counter he completely ignored me and started to wait on people who came after me. I will never go back there just because of the way he treated me. The selection of meats here is really nice and the prices are half of what you would pay at stop and shop. They have a good variety of fruits and veggies here and a nice dairy section. They also have a great alcohol selection in the store. Would definitely shop here again ! read more

I had the same experience at the meat counter as another reviewer, same person, same argument, where I was standing in line. I guess I didn't look the right nationality so I was ignorantly ignored and he knew it. There was no problem taking care of the man in front of me, who was obviously also not in the right place. Frankly, it's not the customer, it's the employee who needs to go. This establishment is losing business because of his ignorance and bad attitude. Read some of your reviews. This is the way grocery stores used to be.... Amarals is a small full service grocery store located on a side like street. You would really never expect to find a grocery store down this street, but it's an extremely busy little grocery store. It really has everything from a full service meat counter to fresh baked goods on the weekend. It serves primarily the Portuguese community who shop there for all their specialty items. We have only gone to Amarals on the weekend and the parking lot is always crazy busy and lots of people shopping inside. Amarals has the best chourico in New England, they sell it shrink wrapped whole, chopped or patties. It is also available at their meat counter. It's worth the trip!! read more

Amaral's is my go-to place for things Portuguese.... the chourice (spicy and not-so-) and the morcela are the real thing. Fabulous Azorean cheeses, even pork tenderloins, all at unheard-of prices compared to what you find when you live in the Newport area. Red wines from the Alentejo of Portugal at $7/bottle for a really nice wine, what's not to like! As an 'merican speaking only english I feel like a foreigner....but the staff is super helpful and super-friendly (typical among the Portugeuse!) ... this is the real thing for a Portuguese market.
