Fill a container with olives from big beautiful tubs. Order salted fish from the cold room with the fishmongers. And good luck finding a bigger variety of sardines. As if selecting a cart full of nosh for your Saturday night is not a big enough task here, you also have Ginormous pastries and breads in their bakery, as well as butcher fresh meats and seafood. Worked in Somerset today & knew I had to make a couple of Portuguese stops on my way home First stop -- @barceloscafe in Fall River! We made the trek to this large Portuguese marketplace and what a gem! They had a large wine and liquor section, cheeses, cookware, spices, dried goods, and prepared foods. They had a whole room of salted fish as well. There's a small cafe with coffee and sandwiches. We took home some Portuguese egg tarts which were so flakey and crispy with a creamy custard. Delicious! There's a whole lot section for tinned fish. We thoroughly enjoyed. Plenty of parking. Would check the hours before going as Sunday has shorter hours. read more

This is a Portuguese marketplace. Parking is ok. They have a really good wine selection. Also, hot food available to buy. Fresh seafood. A lot of the stuff I find to be overpriced unfortunately. They do have a little cafe inside that you can buy coffee and sweets at. Everyone I've talked to there was friendly. They do have wine tastings once in a while too. This store is quite a gem. If you have any interest in Portuguese items of any kind, I can't recommend this place enough. The selection of Portuguese wines is extensive, and most Saturdays they offer a tasting that allows you to sample some incredible offerings. The prepared foods are great including the cod (bacalhau gomes sã) which was featured on New York Times 23 best dishes of 2023, a great Portuguese cheese selection and their stuffed quahogs are one of my favorites. I haven't even covered the various items in the store like tinned fishes from Portugal, Portuguese olive oils, spices, chocolates...you get the idea. This is a very nice and clean establishment in Fall River. They have everything a Portuguese would need for cooking - meat and seafood, and dry goods, many imported - I purchased my octopus there but also I love their barrel goods. My sons love Corn nuts (they have original and BBQ flavor) and roasted sunflower seeds by the pound. These barrel goods always seem fresh and I have not been disappointed. Additionally, around. November of each year they get a shipment of chestnuts from Portugal that are so fresh and delicious. They do have a cafe and things look enticing but I have not tried it out but it always is full. What a cute shop! I wasn't sure if this would be more of a grocery store or a specialty food store, but it was somewhere in between. They have an amazing selection of Portuguese delicacies, including meats and cheeses and the staff is super knowledgeable. The selection of sardines is insane! I also loved the dry goods area, which had lots of dried fruits and nuts. This isn't the type of place you'd visit for your everyday grocery needs. I always love stopping by Portugalia when I'm in town. I usually come to stock up and bring things back to Maryland for my family and I, including cheese and cod fish. I love that there is a little cafe, so you can grab some baked goods and coffee before or after you shop. They have a pretty great wine selection, and had wine tasting, which was perfect. I grabbed a bottle of Alberino, which was delicious. They have so many different things inside, and an amazing selection. Parking is okay, but on busy days, their parking lot gets pretty full, so just go prepared. I will say that some things are a bit overpriced, but they do have a good variety of things that you might not be able to get elsewhere; so its worth the visit. read more

I love Portugalia Marketplace! My family usually goes to Fall River once a month to stock up on their sweet bread and Portuguese groceries. Since I recently moved, I was finally able to join in! Portugalia is certainly the trendy Portuguese grocery store in Fall River and I'm a fan. We started off in the wine section. They were doing a wine tasting and the lovely gentleman pouring the wine was pouring heavy. I got to sample six wines and I enjoyed hearing the story behind each wine. I was looking for a certain wine brand and Andre the employee manning the wine area was extremely knowledgeable and told me all about my options within the brand I was asking about. He was helping other folks pick out a great wine to go with their dinner as well. I think this is a great touch to have someone super knowledgeable at wine to help you make your decisions. They also have liquor as well. My cousin bought a pastel de nata liquor which is fun! Tinned fish is so trendy now, but they've been on this rend for awhile. If you are trying to try out some different tinned fish, it is options galore there. I bought a very beautifully packaged tin of sardines, who knew?! They also have an entire room devoted to salt cod. It's a sight to behold. The have a solid frozen fish/shellfish section and plenty other pantry staples. My friend recently got me into U-Cal (essentially Portuguese Yoohoo) and I picked a case up here. They also have a lovely selection of artisan chocolate and coffee. The prices are high, but it's what you would expect to pay for any fancy chocolate/coffee elsewhere as well. We ended our visit with a trip to their cafe. We had galãos and a rice cake. We stopped off at Portugalia Marketplace to try some of their cooked food offerings to go, They also have some sort of cafe; however, I did not check out what they serve there. This place is usually packed, so that should tell you something! They have a marketplace, huge wine selection, and hot food to go. We started with the Portuguese soup, which was hot and delicious. These guys know their stuff! It tasted homemade! Soaked up the juice with a fresh made pop roll. This would be the perfect lunch just by itself! I went with the octopus plate, because it is impossible to find these days! It was served with potatoes, and was so tender and delicious. I am guessing it was some sort of wine based stew. My wife had the shrimp Mozambique, and I will say that it is the best that I have ever had! I would definitely have to order that the next time! This is a clean, fun marketplace. I absolutely love this place. They have a wide array of options as well as having super nice staff. They have everything from fresh bread to really fresh seafood, as well as escargot. Not impressed with this marketplace. One of our family friends is from Europe and told us this place is a must try and I see it all over social media, but it's not nearly as good as the hype. Luckily, there was a wine/liquor sampling. If it wasn't for this, it would have been a waste of time. The market is way smaller than I thought and the food selection is underwhelming. There should be way more pastries and other foods you can eat there. The only food I ended up getting was from the cafe in the corner. I bought a Slice of carrot cake for $5 but I have to say it was delicious! Very moist and the frosting was excellent. The espresso ($1.50) was too watery, much better overseas. Their wine selection was pretty good and there was a good amount of poor wines around $10. The pastel de nata's did not look appetizing and seemed dull in color. Most of the prices are just completely inflated. Hard to find items that are priced correctly. read more

I've never been to Portugal but now I've been close... This large establishment is fantastic if you want to sample Portuguese specialties! I arrived straight from the Boston airport as this was our first destination! We needed some sandwich fixings for dinner, snacks and picnics for the week! Why not try something we've never had before?! The staff and shoppers were almost all Portuguese and happy to help me. We got chorizo and salpicao as recommended by a kind shopper. Add some Portuguese cheese and then on to the bread! Garlic baguettes! Fruit and nut bread! Cinnamon bread! Coconut bread! These were the four I selected but they had more! I had to get custard tarts because another lady said she always enjoys them in Portugal! I have to agree! They were incredibly flakey and delicious! A few veggies and some mayo and we are set! We ate sandwiches last night and enjoyed the new flavors! Before I left, I saw they had a coffee shop inside so I got us a quadruple espresso and a quadruple latte. Both were delicious! Throw in two small chorizo and cheese pressed sandwiches on Portuguese bread and we ready for the rest of the road trip! The sandwiches were hot, crunchy and tasty! One more thing. Went to Portugalia Marketplace for a quick lunch and Portuguese coffee. It was absolutely delicious. Had a pressed chourico and St. George's Cheese sandwich on a fresh Portuguese roll with a Pastel de Nata (egg custard cup) for dessert with my coffee. I will absolutely be going again. I love the store and the decor too. It's like walking into Portugal for a little while. Now for the staff in the cafe, 2 of the workers were not very helpful or very nice. When asking for suggestions and a question they were both short like they couldn't be bothered and never did answer the question. Seeing this transpired another cafe worker stepped in and took over the order and was super helpful and attentive which rescued the service and we appreciated her doing that. The other 2 just went and started filling up cups and dispensers mumbling under their breaths that they didn't want to be working. It definitely showed in their service. Wanted to like this place but honestly this was the first and probably last time I'll go. It's 90% pantry items (lots of canned fish, pate, pasta, etc) and 10% frozen pre-packaged seafood (octopus, fish, etc). I wouldn't even put the vegetable section in a percentage. They open at 8am and I went at 9am and the veggies were all gone. The olives looked interesting but had a lot of white scoby bits floating all over them. They have a large variety of Portuguese baked goods, delicious looking breads, and cookies (I bought some), a deli with assorted smoked meats, and cooked foods to take home. They have a giant room devoted solely to salt cod (Bacalao or Bacalhoada, Portuguese salt cod stew is one of my favorite dinners ). As a self-proclaimed Lusophile, I was thrilled to visit Portugalia. Prior to visiting, I'd had a great online ordering experience in 2020, when I ordered my beloved Saloio and Sumol. And I'd also had a fantastic email experience with Michael, who looked into whether they carried/could carry my all-time favorite wine (Quintas das Arcas Conde Villar Vinho Verde Rose). They don't/can't, but he researched that for me and I was so, so appreciative. Portugalia carries the important things--wine, port, bread, cheese, olives, olive oil, bacalhau, textiles/ceramics--along with other Portuguese sundries and a small produce section. The wine section is impressive, but so is the dedicated bacalhau room. They didn't have the queijo Sao Bento (ovelha curado) I wanted, but the cheese I did get was good. The bread was fantastic, but I forgot to look for queijadas. The service in the wine section was superb. And I love that the aisle endcaps are decorated in azulejos. Picked up some conservas for my father, which he loved, and I can't wait to try my wine. This large market has plenty of parking, which is great, and was busy on a late Saturday morning. Wow. The place is fantastic. Different types of Bacalhau has it's own temp and humidity controlled room. Freshly prepared Pastéis de Bacalhau were fabulous. Cheeses were great. Portuguese Bread was authentic. Chouriço and Linguiça are to be expected here. But Alheira and Farinheira sausages, which are somewhat obscure, are stocked as well. For cooking hardware they have the crowd pleasing Assador de Barro which is an alcohol fueled ceramic gratin dish that you cook your sausages on.
