Um WOW. I wasn't planning to eat here, but I was trying to find another place my friend had recommended and it was shown a couple blocks away from the ferry. It wasn't, since it was AT the ferry, but I was too tired and frustrated to walk back there. Thankfully, Amano had caught my eye and I walked in to look at the menu. I opted to sit at the bar, but halfway through my meal I turned around and saw that they have seating at their open kitchen! Wish I had sat there, but still thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The bartending staff were all female! Yeah! Anyway, I was going to have a light meal, but was swayed by the staff to get their pasta, as it is there specialty. I opted for the squid ink pasta with clams. So good!! The clams were amazing and the pasta texture was wonderful. I also ordered a couple of clams, which were delicious, fresh and briny without being salty. I was also convinced to get their house made strawberry gelato. Good, but not amazing. I wish I had more time in town as I am told they are a full service bakery and they serve breakfast starting at 7:30. Given how amazing dinner was, I'm sure breakfast would be wonderful. Apparently this is a bakery? I had no idea when I rocked up after the sun had gone down and people were starting to appear for the dinner and drinks hour. For a bakery, this place can be quite poppin' in the night time. It looks chic and modern with dried flowers hanging from the ceiling. There's a concrete elegant feel to it, with a bar smack center to the side, and wide pretty windows for and passerby's to gaze through. Is this someplace you want to spend your evening meal at? Maybe. I was here for a pre-New Years eve cocktail. Again, maybe not the smartest decision I've made in a while. It was crowded, the bar had stools, and right next to it was two high tables with people dining. There was not a lot of space to breathe, in such a tight area. Thank goodness to that couple who got up and allowed us to have two bar seats, this made it a little better. It's just that with such a tiny space, the more people who came in to order a drink, they just squished everyone else with arms going over shoulders to reach their drinks and exchange payment methods. With the cocktails, there are seven to choose from. The Espresso martini good, no comparison to Melbourne one's (heck- it's nicknamed the Melbourne milkshake for a reason.) The one I ordered the Gin Amaretto Sour, it was 'aight. At $17 per person, that's a-okay in my books. It's a pretty place in Briotmart. Ideal for brunch or lunch or any eating time. I went with the scampi order which was tasty but I should have asked for an extra egg on the side cause I thought the meal with one egg wasn't enough to satisfy my breakfast appetite. My wife went for the avocado and toast and says that it's good, I'll take her word for it this time. The long black was one of the best coffees we tasted so far in our New Zealand trip, highly recommend getting coffee here! The menu provided an array of options categorized by their fish veggies or meat offerings listing from starters to mains, which was really interesting . The wine selection and tap beer was excellent and the service attentive upon seating. It could appear many people were waiting but it would be with the wait so book early. The duck was an excellent stand out as a main as were the many starter salad dishes which you can easily share. Overall the dishes were excellent and looking around, fellow guests appeared to be enjoying the experience. My first impression was 'wow'! The interior design is unique, with mass dried flowers on the ceiling and exposed wooden beams with a marble floor. I'm not too sure what my expectations were but I left feeling satisfied. I ordered the strawberry smoothie and coppa/potato hash/chilli/poached egg for breakfast. The smoothie was light and fluffy and the only downside was that I wanted more!! The breakfast was incredibly flavoured - there were a variety of delicious herbs in the dish and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was slightly too salty but it wasn't dramatic enough to influence my palate. Their toilets are kitted out with fancy soap and hand towels. I'm glad I was slightly dressed up, as I doubt you would feel comfortable walking in here in your trackpants. The service was pretty good, staff were friendly and we didn't have to wait long for our meals. I definitely recommend the breakfast and I look forward to coming back and trying the dinner menu. I love how the staff spend their spare time picking herbs rather than just standing there!! The bakery area was also really awesome - I ordered a sweet hazelnut donut to take home. Details by dishes below: - Seared swordfish - cold dish of lightly seared swordfish with acidic refreshing accompaniments. This was a hit and miss on our table. I personally quite like the dish for its freshness which provides a good balance to the other dishes we ordered. But other people felt like it was too mild / boring. - Crayfish pasta - chunky pieces of crayfish filled ravioli with savory sauce. I quite like this dish though I would like the pasta slightly more cooked and the sauce to seep in a bit more into the crayfish (now fees a bit separated). Nonetheless a solid dish. - Oyster Fritter - an interesting take on oyster by deep-frying with egg. A yummy fun dish - Grilled eggplant - a side dish - eggplant grilled perfectly and seasoned with olive oil. A nice side though perhaps a bit oily. - Seared Lamb Chop - very well-cooked though could have used a bit more fragrant and tenderness. The accompanying yogurt sauce provides a refreshing accompaniment. Overall, a successful dish. -Budino (dessert) - raspberry provides a good twist to this classically chocolate dessert. Good but probably not as good as the food. Solid wine, beer and cocktail selection. Good spot for all occasions - dates, meetups with friends, family gatherings Venue is converted from an old warehouse but is glamorously renovated into a cool modern coffee shop + bar + restaurant with signature bouquets of dry flower from the ceiling. Heads up bakery lovers, there's a new joint in town! Introducing the latest venture from the talented Hip Group - Amano bakery. Located in Britomart, you can now get your daily fix of artisan breads, sandwiches, sweet treats, pizza by the slice and salads. I visited Amano last week for lunch and was excited to try out their offerings. Walking in, I loved everything about this new bakery - the well-stocked small space, the heavenly smell of freshly baked bread, the clever design and hanging wheat feature (look up when you step inside), the friendly and welcoming manager I chatted to while I was there and the staff member who didn't mind explaining each offering and the ingredients used, as I seriously couldn't decide on just one thing! So, I ordered a slice of pizza, a salad and a choux pastry bun. The pizza by the slice was high on my list - it is not like traditional pizza, as it is made by slowly fermenting the dough, and is more in the style of focaccia bread. The salami, provolone and oregano was a winner and made me salivating for more! Their takeaway salads also looked appetising and the combination of iceberg lettuce, poached egg, mozzarella, pancetta and walnuts caught my eye, mainly because of how badly I wanted to pierce the yolk! The ingredients all worked well together and it tasted great. For dessert, I was eyeing up one of their choux pastry buns. With a decadent chocolate like mousse filling, covered in choux pastry and topped with rich chocolate ganache, I couldn't fault it. I've since been back this week to try their breakfast offerings, and one of their doughnuts. While their savoury offerings are abundant, I couldn't go past one of their yoghurt cups - three different combinations, including one topped with granola, giant hazelnuts and feijoas. I also chose a vanilla creme doughnut, which I thought lacked flavour and presentation (compared to other doughnuts around). However, I loved the yoghurt cup! It was creamy, crunchy and sweet - my ideal breakfast. And if the above is not enough to tempt you, here's a taste of what you may also find at Amano: - Handcrafted loaves and buns (I like the sound of the kumara sourdough); - A takeaway breakfast station featuring three types of porridge and your choice of sliced breads with a variety of toppings; - Croissants, croque monsieurs and savoury buns; - Fresh sandwiches including a pork and pancetta meatball and provolone cheese number which I am yet to try; - Delectable sweet treats such as friands, tarts and a range of pastries; and - All Press coffee, with the option of fresh buffalo milk or homemade macadamia nut milk, plus cold pressed juices. And the best thing about all this delicious food is that it is handmade onsite, fresh every day. Always a bonus!!! I am so happy that Amano has opened. Wow, what wonderful food and beautiful interior! I had a delicious solo dinner here after a full day on the Coromandel Peninsula. No gluten free pasta here, so I ordered the grilled lamb with roasted beets and beer leaves. This had a garlicky pesto dabbed on top. Also had the roasted baby yams with goat cheese and chilis. Service was laid back and friendly. It was noisy, due to the gorgeous marble slab and poured floor plus the many patrons, but not over-loud in an obnoxious way. My biggest regret is that I didn't find this restaurant until my last morning in Auckland. So I could only have breakfast. Nothing typical about it. They combine Italian flavors with traditional breakfast fare. I had poached eggs with prosciutto and toast potatoes and it was - dare I say - the best breakfast I've ever had. This isn't a breakfast you'd find in Italy. It's something unquestionably unique and delicious. Great service too. They change the menu every day or two for lunch and dinner. Get in quick, I expect that before long this will become the go to for Britomart types and very soon it will be hard to get a table. First week opening and we were sitting at the Bar for lunch. Impressive that such a large space can be filled to the gills on a Friday lunchtime and unlike other restaurant/bars nearby the noise level managed to be kept to a tolerable level. I ordered a soda to start, as I did have to go back to work, but judging by the amount of Cocktails ordered clearly that was not the case for a large portion of the clientele. On to the food I ordered the Octopus salad, delish served grilled with crisp cucumber and a dressing to die for and a side serving of tomatoes (again perfectly dressed). Only down side was that the plate broke (honestly when I had eaten 80% of the meal) but the professional service of Amano saw this quickly rectified by offering a whole new dish. Running out of time to eat said dish again the professional team where quite happy to let me box it up and take away. I will be back, im already planning the work Christmas lunch to be held at Amano. read more
