This is a great Polish restaurant in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. The staff is 1st generation and cooks like its their home kitchen. The golabki (stuffed cabbage) is great, along with all of their soups and any dish with salmon in it. The food is hearty and filling, but not too overwhelming. The staff is warm and very friendly. They even have live music on Friday and Saturday nights sometimes. Great local pianists and violinists come in and set a great atmosphere for dates, family occasions, or just a nice dinner before a night out on Main Street. read more

In Ann Arbor for only a day, my boyfriend and I decided to duck into Amadeus for his birthday dinner. We shared the Amadeus Placek as an appetizer which we thoroughly enjoyed. For dinner I had the Vegetarian Plate and he the Hungarian Pancakes. Though the waitress we had seemed a little distant, the experience was overall lovely. An man softly played acoustic guitar in the background (which I'm usually not a fan of) and we were able to toast some wine and people watch out the window. I have already sent friends visiting Ann Arbor to Amadeus and all have enjoyed it. I will definitely return the next time I visit! read more

It was one of those experiences where I was like, "ooh, that was pretty good... wait, how much is it?" There just seemed to be a disconnect. The ambiance is very much like a mock Viennese cafe - cafe tables, informal decor, no tablecloths, and even a dessert case in the back (like a bakery). So $23 for my entrée seemed a much, especially since I didn't expect to pay close to $50 for my meal. I had the Hungarian Pancakes because I wanted potato pancakes and paprykash (thanks to When Harry Met Sally). It was pretty good, and a little heavier than expected. Real snooty waiters!! We waited about 10 mins to get their attention. We felt VERY not welcomed. We sat on the outside table very dissapointed. The place wasn't even busy! It just felt like they were racists only cater to European people. We had no other choice but leaving the place unattended. Never had this feeling in restaurant in the whole United States. This is five stars because of the combination of excellent food and affordable prices. The pierogie selection is yummy and perfectly prepared. The other appetizers and entrees are authentic Eastern European fare--always tasty. I had the dill pickle soup for the first time earlier this week and I can't get it out of my mind: light yet filling, not too salty with lots of fresh dill balancing the carrots and potatoes. The desserts are outstanding--maybe the best in town. We shared the lemon cake and it was a combination of cheese cake, a lemon layer with a crunchy cake layer. I love Amadeus! It has a great atmosphere, and there was an amazing pianist. I got the pierogi plate, and it was really good! For dessert, we got a chocolate ginger cake, a Constanza and a chocolate gateau. The staff were very nice. Went for the Valentine's day special, Neat, quaint, but they couldn't seat us until 45 minutes after our reservation. The food took a long time to get out as well. Had some good borscht to start things off. I had cheese, potato and mushroom perogis. The cheese ones were a little too rich (and actually sweet) for my taste. The potato were like Mrs. T's out of the freezer section. The mushroom were quite good. On any other night, service and seating are probably fine. If you're after real authentic polish food, you'll have to drive out to Hamtramck. read more

I went here for lunch today right after it opened. I was pretty unsure about what to order, but ended up with the Hungarian Pancakes. I was not disappointed! First some fresh, warm rolls came out. Then the entree came out shortly after. The goulash was tasty and the pancakes were soft. It came with a side salad and kapusta salad, which was also very tasty. Also tried the house cheese cake and Amadeus coffee. The cheese cake was a little thicker than I expected but tasted nice, not too sweet. Atmosphere is very cute and definitely sets this place apart from other local restaurants... I would like to take any visitors to Ann Arbor here in the future. read more

I really, really, really wish Yelp had a 3.5 star feature at a time like this. Amadeus is a super cute and unique spot but my experience was a little rocky. Here's why: - I came with a large group of family members at 4:00pm on a Saturday. Anyone in Ann Arbor knows this is the perfect "dead time" because the Big House is still full. - The waitress was a little abrasive. I'm not sure if it was her first time serving a large table but she was short with us. She also didn't bring out all the food at once, so half the table ate their appetizer-size food and then had to sit awkwardly waiting for everyone else to get entrees. - There was only one other table in the restaurant besides us, and despite that the service was painfully slow. They were already out of one entree option - at 4pm on a Saturday? After appetizers and entrees it took over an hour and a half for dinner. Even at home-cooking style restaurants in NYC this kind of time is unheard of. But despite this, the food was damn solid. These recipes are straight from my Polish grandma's kitchen in the old country. Delicious potato pancakes, fluffy cheese pierogi and schnitzel were top notch and almost as good as I've had at home. Even though the service was not great, I would go back for the food alone - maybe on a non-weekend night with fewer people. read more

Tried this place out for the first time because many of the other restaurants around were at an hour wait. Thinking with the name the fare of food would be German or Austrian it actually was Polish. We went around 630 and the place was bare, and not very busy so we were seated right away. I ordered the Bitke meal and my boyfriend ordered Viennese pork cutlet. We did not get our meal until 730 and we ordered right away when we got in! Then after we were done it took another 20 minutes to get our check! We didn't leave the restaurant until closer to 820! There were two waitresses and again the place was not overly busy. We were not even offered dessert prior to getting our check. read more

I had been craving some Polish food for a while but I was not interested in driving all the way in to Stabtramck, so I decided to try this adorable little place in downtown Ann Arbor. And it is adorable and cozy with hand-carved chotchkies all around. In the center stands an old piano and when we walked in, one of the patrons had taken it upon himself to start playing and singing. I was kind of in love at that point...and then the relationship soured a bit. I guess if I had to describe the food in this place in one word, it would be 'adequate'. Not disgusting but not amazing either. The ogorkowa, salad, and bread basket were probably my favorite parts of the meal. The ogorkowa was creamy yet light and filled with pickle flavor as it should be. The side salad was freshly prepared (i.e. not out of a bag), and the bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and faintly tasted of garlic. For an appetizer, we ordered the Krakow pancake, which is a potato pancake with kielbasa. The potato cake was bland and greasy not crispy. The kielbasa....I want to know where the proprietor gets his kielbasa from because it tastes closer to Eckrich than any smoked fare I've had at any halfway competent meat market. I was sad and I wished I would've changed my order but it was kind of too late. I ordered the Polish Platter and my boyfriend had the Bitki with Kopytka. The Polish Platter came with more mediocre kielbasa (which was made better by the mustard that came with it), a pierogi, an oh so small scoop of bigos, and a golabek. I chose a potato farmers cheese pierogi and it came boiled not pan-fried and crispy which was another disappointment. The bigos had promise but it was literally a tablespoon hidden under the rest of the food and I felt like I didn't get enough of a taste to appreciate it. The golabek...the ground pork inside was reminiscent of my Polish grandmother's meatballs, but the roll itself was bland, I've had and made better. My boyfriend's pork was pretty good, but the star of his plate were his creamy potato dumplings. I could eat many of those. The dessert was also okay. We ordered the Constanza, or white and dark chocolate mousse on top of an orange liqueur soaked sponge cake. The mousse was good but the sponge was nonexistent...a very thin layer and I was hoping for more. That could sum up the whole experience: hoping for more. It was fine, but for the price, I don't believe there were enough high points to bring me back to this place. I guess I will have to make my way to Stabtramck after all. read more

A diamond in the rough. I have always found the kielbasa, pierogi, goulash, and golabki to be tasty. Personally, polish food has always been something of a comfort food. The waitresses are always super nice and offer recommendations. Never been unhappy with a meal I've ordered. You should definitely try the apple pie vodka. On weekends they have someone play classical guitar or piano. There is definitely nothing like this place in Ann Arbor. read more

Very pleasant little place with tons of little Eastern-European decorative items like carved wood figures or tinsel castles. These stand all around, on the walls, dangling from the hems of the window curtains, and on little shelves. The garnished potato pancakes are like a huge pancake sandwich. Most of the foods we tried were enjoyable. When we have been there at dinner time, live classical piano music in the background was a nice touch. For Sunday brunch they offer several variations on the potato pancakes: with scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, salmon roe, beef goulash, chicken paprikash. Also one or two other choices. I am partial to brunch served neatly on a plate: NOT gorge-yourself buffets. So I find this appealing. read more

My family is 100% Polish so I am very picky when it comes to my Polish food. I this place. The decor and ambience makes you feel like you are in an old school European restaurant. The price is a little higher over an average Polish place, but the quality and presentation is worth every extra penny. The dill soup was mind blowing. Went with the Polish platter and washed it down with a cold Polish beer. We've been to Amadeus several times over the years and recently returned for a visit this winter. I hovered between a 3 and a 4 on this one. I really like the food here. Paprikash, pierogies, all so tasty. It is fairly heavy and not inexpensive, but we've always had great food. The interior of the restaurant is charming in an old world sort of a way. I love the way the light from inside the restaurant illuminates the street. The restaurant can be quiet at times. They offer Sunday brunch which I've never tried but looks really good. Parking is convenient - there is a structure right across Washington but it does fill up. read more

Some of the best Eastern European food I have eaten anywhere. The ambiance is lovely and tastefully done with about 12-14 tables inside and some outdoor patio seating as well. Robin was passionate about providing the best dining experience possible even being initially a bit short handed. She was attentive, knowledgeable and offered some great recommendations. She is clearly invested in her job and it shows. Our table of three had two appetizers- the pierogi sample plate and the kielbasa plate. The sausage is made for them by a local butcher to their recipe and is exceptional and bursting with flavor. The pierogi were tender with a flavorful stuffing of cheese and potato. The wonderful homemade rolls were served in a basket and were fresh from the oven. I ordered the Goulash and it was incredible - actually, the best I have ever eaten. Big chunks of quality beef that literally melts in your mouth. The beef appeared to be braised then slow cooked in a rich sauce with hints of tomato, pepper, onion, paprika and other spices. It was served, at my request, over the homemade dumplings rather than the more traditional wide noodles. The dumplings were cooked perfectly and had some bite to them without being undercooked. During dinner I had a glass of the house Pinot Grigio which was very reasonably priced and quite good for a house wine. I topped dinner off with a dessert called the Castanza. It was an orange liqueur sponge cake with layers of dark and white chocolate mousse. The presentation of each plate was artistic and appealing without being overly pretentious. I am thankful I still have two nights here in Ann Arbor for my conference. Tonight was the first time I have been to Amadeus, it will not be my last. read more

After eating at several pleasant brew pubs in town that apparently are all owned by same conglomerate, my husband and I and grad student daughter decided to give this place a try. It was empty when we arrived on a Thursday evening, another family just leaving. The waiter helped us decide what to order. He was right on in descriptions. All of our expectations were exceeded. Great place for Eastern European cuisine! We went for lunch on a Saturday. The place is small so large groups might pose a problem or longer wait; it's what happens. My husband and I ordered the dill pickle soup and beet soup, both flavorful. I enjoyed the dill pickle soup more. For main dishes I ordered the Budapest pancakes and my husband ordered the straight chicken paprikash. Potato pancakes were nice, crisp, textured right and the flavor was excellent; not just mushed potatoes. The chicken paprikash was wonderful! Creamy, filling and the pepper flavor throughout is paired perfectly with the white wine cream base. We splurged and ordered dessert as well. Napoleon and Sacher torte both yum yum! If you like rich, full and comfort flavors this is the place for you if you have never tried Hungarian/Russian/Polish traditional dishes. We will be returning. All things said our check was very reasonable and we have spent more with less flavor and experience at other big name places. read more

My wife was starving and said let's go here on Sunday. We had gone to Plymouth for the Art Fair, but it was ridiculously crowded, so we went to A2. It was not much of a fancy store front, but when you walked through the door, it was like you walked back in time. We were greeted by a great piano with a picture of Mozart, and a space that was soooooo historically inviting and genuine. Lots of history and antique mirrors everywhere. We were met by two women customers on their way out who told us, "Everything was amazing. You're in for a really great experience!" They were not wrong. We had a lovely meal. Everything was delicious, right sized, and presented properly, whether cold or warm. Michael was our waiter, and he was great! He managed a very large table near us with a very happy, but roisterous family group with grace and style. Very accomadative, but not at all interfering in our meal. I usually tip 15%, but I gave him 20% because he earned it. My wife had dill soup which she said was awesome, then had a stuffed cabbage, and a kielbasa, with a salad. I had a smaller dish 'kielbasa placek', which had 6 slices of kielbasa, with a great potato pancake, covered with onions, red & green peppers, and sour cream, along with a smaller salad. Perfect for someone with not a great big appetite. Parking is in a public structure across the street, at $1.20 per hour--we paid 2.40, very reasonable! We'll be coming back soon, even though we came from Troy. Worth it!!!!! read more

A couple weeks ago, I visited a friend in Ypsilanti, MI (I'm from Chicago), and we went to Amadeus for dinner. It was fabulous, and both of us were very happy with the food AND the service. Our joke was, why do they call it Amadeus, if it is Russian/Hungarian/etc.? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was Austrian, wasn't he? : ) My friend is vegan, and focused on potato dishes. I had mostly vegetarian, but with a highly recommended potato dish with smoked salmon. Ver-r-r-ry yum-my!!! We took our time and enjoyed special coffee at the end. Anyway, it's a small place, so definitely make reservations. Very reasonable, especially compared to Chicago, public parking is right across the street. read more

I love this place. It is cozy, romantic, and has very good food. It remembers me my grandmother's place, and it is here in downtown Ann Arbor. I like very much to go there for Amadeus Placek. Just the place w. just the menu for a midweek night w. single digit temps: comfort food cooked w. restraint, flavor and skill. Enjoy at your own leisurely pace in a soothing and charming environment. We were both in the mood for that. Our 7:30 reservation was not only honored but, despite being a party of two, we were seated at one of the two fourtops in the bay windows flanking the entryway. Prettily decorated w. rustic holiday decor and, thanks to the heavy velvet curtains at the entry, very comfortable temperature-wise and private. Our small bread basket was deceptively deep & we barely finished the petite rolls. They were soft & oily as is found at many places that should know better. Our house salads were correct as to portion size & absolutely immaculate as to crispness and freshness. The mild creamy dressing was served in a petite pitcher on the side (we didn't even have to request this). My companion selected a bottle of Lan Rioja 2005. Properly presented for tasting, from the first swirl this red was already opening up like a velvety rose & only got better as the meal progressed. I will definitely seek out this wine at a purveyor's. As an appetizer we split a platter of 10 pierogis - 2 each of five flavors (potato, mushroom, potato w. cheese, sauerkraut and cheese) All the flavors - even the sauerkraut - were subtle and mild, meltingly tender, properly kissed w. soft bread crumbs & a little dollop of sour cream. I confess my love of Amadeus' chicken paprikash but was reluctant to the same dish again and again. Imagine my delight when I spotted an entree featuring this beloved classic over (4) lightly seasoned semi crisp potato pancakes. The combined textures were very appealing, the cold artichoke salid (w. rotini pasta) a delicious counterpoint. This being his first visit my companion opted for the combination Polish plate. Like my own entree, everything was flavorful, served at just the right temperature, and nicely presented especially given how much food occupied the plates. The cabbage roll, the kielbasa, the golabki, the single pierogi - like a grandma's kitchen. We feasted & recovered by savoring the rest of the wine. Our becomingly sweet & gracious waitress timed her arrivals nicely and never rushed us. We left at 11 pm, the last diners, thoroughly and charmingly well fed w. what is really the best (and only?) Austrian Viennese cooking in the city. One star was subtracted (and in my mind a half star would be more like it) because the pierogis arrived way after the salad course and landed at the same time as our entrees. I believe this was a pacing issue in the kitchen as our waitress was attentive and the establishment was perhaps 25% full. The high quality and filling portions were right where they should be for the prices of dining downtown establishments. Most of all, if your palate is tired of being assaulted by salty, cheesy, and over the top sauce drenched "gourmet" food, in scanty portions, you should try Amadeus. They don't need over the top descriptions to "sell" you on their authenticity. The servers don't have to narrate the origins of every dish. They are confident of their flavors and quality, and let the foods speak for themselves. Dessert is a whole different universe of temptation, and, w. the hot chocolate and Viennese coffee worth, a trip in itself. Ah, but that will be another review. read more

I seldom leave review for restaurants because I usually can tell and understand they sometimes too busy to take care of all customers and I would like to enjoy the good food and atmosphere. Life is too short to be wasted like that. So normally if I don't leave comments that means that restaurant was good and acceptable. However, I was kinda disappointed with my choice to have brunch there by just judging by exterior appearances. I had so looked forward to trying it for awhile but too busy to go. Finally got a chance to have it and its way lower than I expected. First, they gave us a really tiny spot even though there was not crowded and still many tables available. We kindly asked the host if we could sit by the window and she said fist said '"that's for four people but you're only two." Well we got that and were able to understand it if she stopped talking here. But the thing is she arrogantly said another thing which was "Well that table was by the window and was REALLY freezing if you don't mind" Anyway, 30 mins later, our food was served but they didn't give us any silverware and napkins and never noticed it until we asked for it. At no point during our meal were we asked if everything was okay. At the end, they didn't even say good bye to us. The ambience was lovely and decoration looked really old world but the food, service and attitude are totally lacking and need to be improved. read more
