The staff were friendly, despite losing our order in the system and needing to have it parroted back to them so we could pay. Avoid.

Arrived at around 6 on Friday night, the drive up went ok although I'm sure the satnav screwed us as per usual. Annoyingly the onsite parking at the hotel was full, both front and back, after circling the place like parking space eating vultures we gave up and parked at a free car park along the road behind the Co-op. It didn't look all that secure but we had no problems, other than a wee walk to the hotel, which probably was similar in length to the walk to the back car park. The hotel is quite big and has lots of rooms on different levels even on the same floor. Potential difficulty for older people with heavy bags I suppose. The hotel was nice, not dated, but not new, the room was nice and clean if a little small, though it did have a fairly large T.V. The spa part lied and said it had a steam room, which it didn't but it did have a sauna. Some of the signs were misleading, like the one to the pool which we couldn't actually access, instead you had to go through the bar and then the ballroom. We breakfasted here twice and had dinner once. The food was good but the service was a little slow on two out the three occasions. All this moaning, then why a 4 star review I hear you ask? Simple, the staff, they were absolutely great really accommodating, helpful, friendly and cheerful, they really helped to make this a good experience. We also booked hot stone massages at late notice which and they were as accommodating as they could be in this respect. If I was up this way I would be happy to come here again, however, had the staff not been so great then it was probably more of a 3 star kinda place.

The food was very good and the service, although a little slow, was impeccable. The beautiful restaurant is like a room in a stately home with artistically painted wall panels. There are some other sitting rooms and a nice bar with a real fire. Incidentally, the bar is open 24 hours for residents at the time of writing. Unfortunately, the accomodation was disappointing to say the least. On arrival, we found that we would not be staying in the Country House building, but instead, in the "Sportsman's Lodge". Okay, we thought, ' still sounds good. However, when we drove a minute or two down the road, we discovered that the "Sportsman's Lodge" was, in fact, about 20 little Butlins style cabins with no WiFi. Sparcely furnished and worn, and the mattress was so soft and thin, that we "bottomed-out" on it. Each cabin had it's own bathroom, but it was a big let down compared to where we thought we would be staying.. That said, it wasn't crazy expensive (~UKP 140), so I guess we got what we paid for, and the (extra cost) dinner and breakfast in that beautiful restaurant partially made up for it. Beautiful grounds too, but the bait and switch on the accomodation was definitely disappointing. None of the pictures on the (third party) website showed the exterior of the "Sportsman's Lodge", just the beautiful Country House.

From the moment you walk in the front door you know you're staying somewhere special. We stayed for two nights, on the Friday and Saturday night, and after our disappointing stay at the Dunkeld Hilton, this cheered us up. We didn't stay in the main hotel building but were lodged in the "Riverside Suites". The room was perfect and had a door leading out on to a small covered balcony overlooking their fishing beat on the river Tay. The balcony had a table and a couple of chairs so you could sit and take in the view and fresh air. We arrived a bit too late for lunch so opted for afternoon tea in the drawing room which is this big old room with those lumpy comfy chairs you'd expect of a pile such as this. On the first night we opted to dine in starting with aperitifs in the bar. The barman knocked up a couple of mean bloody mary's to get our appetites going. The restaurant is top notch and I found my three courses of scallops, chicken (really regretted not having the fillet steak after I spotted it on another diner's plate) and desert exquisite. The saucing and presentation were outstanding. As you would expect from an establishment such as the Ballathie their wine list is pretty extensive and they also have a decent selection of "new world" wines. We opted for a bottle of Angus The Bull to go with our dinner which was excellent. All in all I couldn't find a fault with the Ballathie, it would have been nice to stay in the main building, but we weren't disappointed with the river side suites. I'll definitely be back.

Their Conservatory restaurant is light and airy, perched over a wee garden and stream, and offers locally sourced, homemade fare. It was the perfect spot for five hungry travelers who were pure done in. For the first morsels of food to pass anyone's lips in Caledonia, we ordered the intriguing Haggis Pakoras and some Cullen Skink. Out came several crisp, golden puffs of haggis, bound in an Indian-spiced chickpea batter and served with spicy tomato sauce and raita; and bowls of milky white leek, potato and smoked haddock soup with freshly baked soda bread. Even through the edge of hunger the delicate details of both dishes were readily apparent. For lunch we ordered a full sampling of BoC's local fare: a Tayside Venison Burger with local blue cheese and caramelized onion; a Minted Lamb Burger with onion marmalade; the Ploughman's Platter with Scottish cheddar, house-made chutney and crusty ciabatta; and a Brie and Ham panini. BoC's chips and crisps are all made in-house and presented the perfect pairing to the perfectly sized (lunch portions!) burgers and sammies. The $ to £ exchange ain't so hot right now, so prices here (as all over the UK) can hit the wallet hard. $15 for a Ploughman's Platter. $20 for a burger. What are you gonna do? The setting, food and warm Scottish hospitality make Bridge of Cally an exceptional rest for any traveler.

We did really like it - it is inexpensive - we paid £35 pppn and for that we got a very acceptable room with a good bathroom and a really great breakfast. Loads of choice for breakfast with range of healthy and unhealthy options. Dinner in the conservatory was just what we wanted - they focus mainly on good, solid, well cooked pub food staples - I had fish and chips which was really good - light crispy batter and plenty of fish. They also have a more adventurous specials menu that changes daily - that had things like sea bass, veal and tuna steak. The area around here is beautiful - you are just on edge of the Cairngorms and if you like walking, skiing or golf this would be great place to start out. We drove from here to inverness via scenic route and it really is breath taking country side. Final mention goes to the lovely young chap who checked us in, served us diner and breakfast and then checked us out again. He couldn't have been nicer - not sure if he family or just works there but is a real asset. Frendly, cosy little Inn in beutiful part of Scotland. Laura
