Went in friday night 6/19, called an order in to pick-up & takeout. I know friday nights is busy but first off the guy answering the phone didn't know english or the menu. 15 mins later i'm at the counter to pick it up. It took 15 mins for the Spanish gentleman to package the lady in front of me's food bu picking things out of the other dinners snd putting in the lady's bag . I pay, go home no gravy on chicken fried steak, no roll, no salad, my wife's bbq plat ha no bread snd no beans. What a disappointment. . Go back 7/4 call in 2 handheld breakfast burritos bacon and green They charged my wife over $24.00 Added $7.00 for smothered green because it was green sauce instead of chopped green. You gotta be kidding me! Think i've spent enough money at that place for a while. New owners & new staff snd people on the register on Friday nite who don't speak english snd just throwing crap in a bag! The service was very good. The wait staff was friendly and offered recommendations on the menu. I had the brisket and it was delicious. The restaurant is decorated with rustic tables and chairs that were made by the original owner. It's definitely a restaurant we'll visit again. read more

We were very hungry when we stopped in for breakfast, which can sometimes make you enjoy even a crappy meal! Not this time! I had red beef enchiladas, wife had a chicken breast sandwich. Enchiladas were filled with old beef. Tasted old and stale, like it was cheap beef that had been warmed up in a microwave. Corn tortillas were cheap store bought that were covered in oil, limp and white. They had just been dunked in oil and loosely wrapped around some crappy hamburger meat. This was our second time visiting Alto Cafe and first time since new ownership. The food this time was great!! The service, could be better, the young man who sat us and asked us what we wanted did not know what pastries they were serving and just seemed like he did not know what was on the menu. He brought our drinks and food out very quickly though. The restaurant is still inviting and clean with plenty of seating inside, the patio and at their bar area. We ordered cappuccino, chicken fried chicken with eggs and tried the pistachio croissant. Th chicken was crispy and flavorful, the eggs were cooked to a perfect over-medium, the croissant was heated up a little too much so it was very hot but after it cooled it was flaky and buttery. Since that visit we went back a couple other times for lunch and they stayed consistent, which is really hard to find nowadays. Definitely recommend if you're in the Ruidoso area. read more

Always try to eat here at least once when we're in Riudoso. Great traditional breakfast! Eggs cooked as ordered, good hash browns. This is not a dog friendly restaurant. We tried to call before we went over there but the line continuously rang busy. I saw they had a patio so I went inside. It asks you to wait to be seated which is fine but awkward because it's a big open room and everyone else is sitting. There is no hostess station. It took awhile for someone to greet me but it was from across the restaurant loudly asking "1!?" I walked over to where the person was and said I had a question. I asked if the patio was open because we had our Yorkie with us. She said no, it's only in here and you'll have to order to go. I said thank you and turned around and left. No you're welcome, good bye, nothing. Rude. Took our money elsewhere at Village Buttery where they greeted us as soon as we sat down with a bowl of water for our pup. I just left Alto Cafe. This is usually my go to for breakfast. But this time let's just say it was an off day for Alto Cafe. The service was the worst it has ever been. The two young brunettes at the register around 11:50am were completely checked out. They wouldn't even acknowledge my presence as I was trying to pay. No one else was up there but them and myself. I hope the person responsible for hiring individuals and training will make sure the friendly environment that makes Alto Cafe so special doesn't go down the drain. Our waitress wasn't much better. And another problem was the overcooked small rock hard biscuits. This is not their usual. I hope the next time I visit I'm treated like an equal human being and not less than. read more

Well, we were able to get in, get seated, and then wait over 40 minutes for our food. I'm thinking maybe breakfast is a better bet here? I ordered a grilled Turkey sandwich - with no cheese... BUT- had 2 Kraft singles slapped to it when it came out and some charred bread . When you're hungry and have already waited over 40 minutes, you just take it and go. Yeah... not the best. The ones that got the catfish said it was good- but the dessert was a box mix with some tubbed icing. SERVICE-Our waitress was sweet, and I felt bad she had to wait on the kitchen for so long. Been here several times. Last time had fried catfish. It tasted like leftovers, kind of rubbery. Today we had sliced brisket plate and enchilada plate. The sliced brisket was very dry. We came in about 2:45 pm yesterday for a late lunch, not knowing that they close at 3 pm during the week (I hate to be one of those people, especially having worked in the food industry before). It was mostly filled with older folks at the time, and we were promptly seated. Service was quick and portions were huge. Our table got two clubs ($9, one with fries added on for $1.95), a chef salad, and a chicken fried steak. Our friend said the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes was just okay with not a lot of seasoning. The clubs seemed to be some of the top items per reviews, and it did not disappoint. My sister-in-law's dad ordered the post wedding celebratory dinner from Alto Cafe. We drove by Alto Cafe a few times during our visit to Ruidoso, NM towards mid-May 2021. There were always a bunch of cars parked on all sides of the restaurant. On our way out to the location where my brother and his new bride wanted to have photos taken and a reading of their vows, I asked if the place was any good. My other brother laughed and said "that's where dinner is being catered." I couldn't wait to eat. Focusing on my bridesmaid duties was hard. Lol. The brisket! Oh, yes make sure to get the brisket! It was so good & tender. The chicken was pretty good. The sausage was perfect. There was a plethora of sides too: BBQ beans, green beans, and potato salad. Don't forget the yummy BBQ sauce! GO!!! Yes, go to Alto's! The Friday special - fried catfish - was perfectly fried. The breading was light but crunchy. The salads are good - especially if you get their homemade ranch dressing. It was so good that I ordered some to go! The brisket is tender and beefy - just remember to get the strips and NOT the shredded brisket, which is over shredded. We got more brisket and beans to go - and had them for dinner the next night, just as good. The chili Philly cheesesteak was excellent. Loaded with tender and flavorful beef - not like the usual throw away roast beef most restaurants use for cheese steak. Finally, if possible, save room for dessert. OMG, we got a peach pie made with fresh peaches and it was so good - not too sweet, and the perfect balance of crust and peach. I almost cried when they ran out before I put in my to go order. The service is excellent. This is the kind of down home diner where most customers know the waiters and everyone is happily chowing down. The negatives - the staff and the kitchen is very busy. So most days they don't answer the phone. There are no reservations so often there is a line. But sometimes.... like a weekday lunch after 1 PM can be pretty empty. And worth the wait. read more

This place is busy. Expect a wait to be seated and perhaps one for your food. But the wait is worth it! The menu board can show a lot of "sold out" but you'll find something to your liking. I have been craving fried catfish for months. Finding good catfish in the desert is difficult. The steak place in Cruces, where I live, offers a little 8 ounce filet for like $16. Here I got a plateful of catfish like it should be served for around $12. Yay me! This as good a local mom and pop place you'll find any where. Go whenever they are open and eat! read more

Can personally attest that the club sandwich, turkey patty melt and catfish plate are superb. Many restaurants in Ruidoso have trouble finding and keeping staff. It does not appear that Alto Cafe has this problem as we continue to see the same friendly faces working there. You can't go wrong here give them a try you will not be disappointed. read more

This place seems to stay pretty busy, especially for breakfast on a Sunday. The parking lot was packed! Service was great. Food was your typical cafe with a little twist. I had the Bonita Biscuit with sausage, which is basically a sausage, egg, and cheese omelette folded inside a biscuit with gravy on top. My husband ordered the hand breaded steak fingers; he said they had good flavor. There's a reason the parking lot is full. Breakfast or lunch, I saw some oatmeal on the menu, but this place is offering stick-to-your-ribs grub. Our total meal and drinks for two was $19, so the value is great! read more
