Traveling thru New Mexico on nice spring day. Small town, lunch time & hungry - what a combination. This is how you eat small. All 12 of us enter a busy restaurant and get seated within minutes. We weren't the only large group with the same idea. So from the start these guys have got it together. Our server arrived promptly with menus and took drink orders. Drinks arrived and orders were taken. Our food was at the table within 15 mins. Hand Breaded Chicken Fried Steak with fries & cole slaw and steak fingers with tater tots. The Chicken Fried Steak was nicely fried without the overdone edges on the ends. The Steak Fingers were also hand battered and nicely fried. The Gravy was well spiced went well with the lunches. The service was equally outstanding. There was someone by our table frequently checking for needs and refilling drinks. As busy as it was this was no small feat! A great stop, great food and great service - it doesn't get much better than this. If you're in the area I highly recommend a stop here!

If you're making the drive between Santa Fe and Roswell, this is realistically the only stop--and…read morehonestly, it's a pretty solid one. Penny's has that classic roadside diner charm, complete with the shiny silver exterior and that satisfying old-school diner door. It leans into nostalgia in the best way, like you accidentally pulled into a time capsule somewhere along a desert highway. Inside was clean and well-kept, and the staff were attentive and friendly without being over the top--exactly what you want when you're road-weary and hungry. Food-wise, the burger hit the spot and the tots were crispy (always a win). Simple, classic diner food done right. A couple of knocks: the bathroom was just okay, nothing terrible but not great either. And the soda... not good. It had a strange flavor, almost like the lines hadn't been changed in a while--definitely stick with water or something bottled. Overall, it's not a destination restaurant, but for where it's at, it absolutely delivers. A reliable, nostalgic pit stop that does the job well. Worth the stop? Yes. Just skip the soda.

Finding Penny's is like striking gold (note: this review applies to their Yampa, Colorado, location…read moretoo). Either stretch of road is remote and food options are few and far between. When you see the lights are on, it's a relief. From what I understand, they're able to stay open 24 hours because of a contract with Big Rail, which keeps train crews fed and honestly, the rest of us travelers benefit too. I love that the choo-choos take care of their people while providing a service to anyone passing through. It's a cozy, welcoming stop when you need it most. The kind of place that makes a long drive feel less lonely. In the instance I'm in those parts of New Mexico or Colorado, Penny's is my go-to. Five stars!

Yeah I get it, this place is known for their burgers. But even the family wasn't impressed with…read morethese burgers. About a 2.5 hour drive from El Paso, my boyfriend's extended family decided that they wanted burgers for lunch. With only a couple of options, we stumbled into the Hall of Flame Burgers. Service is fast and efficient and the place has several tables. You order your food and someone brings your food to you. Except everyone scrambles to occupy tables so you need to get in where you fit in. Not only is the place chaotic, the bathrooms downstairs don't lock and I was the first in the family to realize after two people walked in on me in the two times I locked the door. So go with a friend and have them watch the door to save yourself the embarrassment. The food is okay and nothing to write home about. My partner and I tried the green chili cheese fries and the chicken tacos. The green chili cheese fries are a disappointing mass of fries with the cheese pooled at the bottom of the tray. The hatch chilis are soggy and an unremarkable addition to the fries. The tacos were the most American tacos I've ever had dressed with chicken lettuce and tomato. There was nothing Mexican about these tacos but at least the chicken was tender. The chips and salsa that came with the tacos were the best part of the meal. Even my family, who got the burgers, were unimpressed. I'm not expecting a gourmet meal in the middle of New Mexico, but you would think the food would match the great reviews for this place. For what it is, get your meal and get full for the drive ahead because there's probably no food outside of Ruidoso for miles.
