This practice has become non responsive after multiple emails and I have therefore filed a complaint with the insurance company and disputed the charge. So after paying for three different dentists to do xrays and tell me they wouldn't do what I wanted in January, by the time I made another appointment to try again I definitely went in with a sour attitude, assuming I was just paying money for an empty consultation AGAIN. But that was absolutely not the case, they did what I wanted and better. I feel confident with my smile today and had the best visit I've ever had at a dentists office. Not just a good visit, but they managed to make my dentist visit actually enjoyable. They exceeded my expectations and I would recommend them to anyone. I called the after-hours line and was seen this morning without a lengthy wait. AND, there wasn't an astronomical charge attached to this unexpected visit. Dr. Joon Kim, Dr. Huynh, Raven, Rochelle and the WHOLE staff are very compassionate and caring; which is very rare these days. They take time to ensure that you are comfortable and pain-free before procedures are started. Whenever you decide to visit, be sure not To let the exterior portion of the building fool you. The office is clean and the equipment is sterile. Good hand-washing techniques are practiced. I even noticed that the exam room chairs are sanitized between each patient. In other words, even though this practice serves mostly those who are indigent they treat the people like they are important. (Which they are. ;) I truly believe that God is going to reward and bountifully bless this thriving practice to become one of the leading dental establishments in Houston. When I came to have it finished, I was presented with another invoice and told that what I paid didn't cover the entire process!!! Why wouldn't they ask for that money up front? I was additionally upsold on services which I didn't ask for, but I was told were absolutely necessary. Now I feel like I may have been scammed on the price of the work I already paid for and unsure if I even actually needed an implant, which is probably overpriced. To add insult to injury, when I showed up for my appointment I was told my parking would be validated "when I paid". Apparently the close to $5,000 I've already spent doesn't get me a bit of grace, here. Ignore these jokers and find an honest dentist - don't make the mistake I did.

I've visited this dentist office several times and they have always been friendly, those visits…read morehave been fine enough but this review is related the last time I visited and how it went after that. I went to have a recent crown re-done from a different dental office that had come loose twice already, and at the previous visits at AK they had recommended I redo that crown. I went in as a walk in customer that morning with the expectation that I would be there for a few hours. Once I went to the back, the doctor reviewed what she was going to do and let me know that since it was a busy day I might be there for 4-5 hours. Not being able to wait that long, I let them know I would have to reschedule. Before leaving, 2 dental assistants recemented the original crown that would fall off (and did a terrible job I might add) and then I was scooted away to the front office to reschedule and go over payment terms for the crown. I was presented an estimate that my insurance would pay about half and I would be responsible for half, which seemed decent. I signed the estimate and I set an appt for 2 weeks and left. On the way home, the recemented crown came off but I didn't worry too much since I had an appt coming up soon. In the meantime, while talking with a friend about all of this, he told me to double check my benefits because dental insurances don't cover a new crown if it has been less than 5 years. So I called AK dentistry to confirm, as my original complaint was that a crown I got recently (key word RECENT) keeps coming off. I'm very very glad I called because after speaking to the office they did confirm that my insurance would not cover the crown since it had been less than 5 years. Once knowing that, I canceled the appt because I couldn't pay the full amount of the new crown. Fast forward 3 months and I'm presented a bill for $276 for an office visit and crown recementing. I called to ask why I was being charged for an office visit that never materialized in anything since the wait was too long and for recementing a crown by assistants that didn't last 20 minutes. After a lot of arguing back and forth they reduced the bill by half but failed to understand my point. The lady told me have you ever been to a doctor office without paying anything? I responded well yes if the visit never happened? I was literally sat down for 10 minutes and advised that the visit would take 4-5 hours. That is not an "office visit". Also, I believe they knew full well that my insurance wouldn't cover the crown as they presented to me but didn't let me know until I asked them specifically of the 5 year rule in order to just have me get the work done. Totally disingenuous and if the person on the phone cared to provide excellent service as much they tout it things would have been different. I won't be going back and after recommending people to go there I won't do that anymore either.

This is disappointing because, despite everything I'm about to say, my smile is still much better than it was when I first started treatment. When I began orthodontic treatment, I had a severe overbite. I couldn't fully close my mouth, and my bottom teeth were actually wearing down my top teeth. Before agreeing to treatment, I made it very clear that I travel for work and would not be able to come in every month. I was told that this would simply extend my treatment time, but the total cost would remain a little over $2,000. I agreed and enrolled in a payment plan, making my payments whether I could attend appointments or not. There were times when I could only come in once every three months because of work. The treatment plan that was explained to me included braces on my upper teeth for approximately 16 visits and braces on my lower teeth for around 6 visits (I don't remember the exact numbers, but that was the general plan). However, when I made my final payment, Dr. Salas unexpectedly told me I was ready to have my braces removed. I was confused and asked, "What about my bottom braces?" His response was that I didn't need them anymore. At the time, I didn't question it much because I was honestly tired of wearing braces. Looking back, though, I feel like I paid for a treatment plan that I never fully received. My overbite is still present, and I can't help but feel that I paid the full price without receiving the complete treatment that was originally discussed. To make matters worse, after treatment I asked about the teeth whitening I had been told I would receive. Instead of honoring what I understood had been promised, I was told I would have to pay over $100 for it. That only reinforced my feeling that every opportunity was another attempt to charge me more. Dr. Salas was always kind and professional, which is why this experience has been so disappointing. I trusted him and the practice for years, but I left feeling like my concerns were overlooked and that I didn't receive the complete orthodontic treatment I expected after paying in full. Based on my experience, I can no longer recommend City Smiles Dental & Orthodontics or Portal Family Dentistry & Orthodontics. I hope they take concerns like mine seriously and improve their communication about treatment plans so future patients don't leave feeling the way I did.
