"Pre-paid service due for the property at (my address)". "Air Conditioning Tune-Up Expires 5/31/25 Pre-Paid". I checked my records and never heard of or sent money to this company before. Their record keeping must be so poor that they waste costly postage mailing these "Notice of Pre-Paid Service" to fake customers. The work itself and the plumber was wonderful. This may be a good company if you are planning on having multiple items fixed over a course of a year, but I strongly advise against using this company if you need a single item fixed. I had a leak in my kitchen sink that I wanted to get fixed quickly and was referred by a friend who uses Althoff. They scheduled for the next day and informed me there would be a $175 service fee for coming out regardless of if they do work or not. I don't have an issue with this as I'm sure traveling across the city to give out free quotes can become disadvantageous to the company in terms of time and $. Since I would already be paying a service fee, I decided I would have them swap the faucet at the same time. I assumed they would factor in the service fee into final bill. That's on me for assuming this which I definitely should not have. At no point did they did say anything about membership until the plumber showed up on site. This is where their very questionable pricing structure comes in.... I was quoted $1500+ for service fee, basket replacement, and installing (customer supplied faucet). If I signed up for their monthly membership which is $45 per month, it would be around $1200. I saw the price list as he was creating the quote and recall seeing $500-$600 just for faucet replacement. I was so floored by both estimates that I said skip the faucet replacement and just do the basket replacement. As a member, the basket replacement was $440 plus $45 for first month of membership for a total of $485 (service fee waived). As a nonmember, the basket replacement was $555 plus $175 fee for a total of $730. I signed up for the membership not wanting to waste $175 and figuring I would try to take advantage of the membership. The whole experience did not sit right with me though, so I called the next day to cancel. I paid the balance between member and nonmember, so I don't get wrapped into a membership I don't use. Again, I can understand a service fee and do understand they can't quote work until they are onsite but it's pretty evident that they margin markup their rates to make it look like a cost savings if you get the membership. Any other plumber (there are plenty of good, certified plumbers in Chicago) would have likely cost around $400-500 for a basket replacement without all the gimmicks of a membership. A faucet replacement install... probably $300 give or take. I definitely could have gotten both items done for the same price I paid for one item if I had gone with a different just as reputable plumber. Moral of the story, proceed with caution and only engage if you know you'll have a lot of projects. The work is good, and staff is nice, but I'd rather work with a company with a more transparent pricing structure. read more

We except got financing tech came out and at the end of the day he tells us the three other rooms he was going to do he all of a sudden couldn't do gave us. B S excuses he just didn't want to do it!! Then prior to this visit I referred Althoff to my friend she got a new hot water tank they told her because we referred her we would receive an. Amazon gift card we Never received it and she called Althoff and told them we never received the gift card they apologized and said they would send it out. We still never received it!!!!!! I hadn't gotten my humidifier, furnace or water heater looked at in the last couple of years since the last service that I used went out of business, so using Yelp, I contacted Althoff and one other company. The other company responded 10 days later. Althoff got back to me right away, had numerous times and days to choose from, and had various service options. The serviceman came out, showed me what was wrong with my humidifier, recommended different options for repair, and was knowledgeable and **not pushy**. I've learned a couple of things through the process of using Althoff to replace an actuator on my HVAC. 1) Don't trust Google reviews and 2) Althoff charges almost $600 an hour for labor. I used them due to their 4.8 star rating on Google. Didn't check yelp, oops They quoted/charged $674 to replace an actuator on my HVAC that costs under $82 retail and took 45 minutes to replace. My bad for not doing research before agreeing to move forward w their quote. My tenant was rightfully panic'd and it's February, so I didn't have time to pull in additional quotes. However, I had asked them to quote installing a digital high voltage thermostat as well and they proposed $850. This didn't feel right. I did the research this time. The Honeywell thermostat costs under $190 retail. When I challenged them on this, they lied by claiming it would take 2.5 hours to install because they would have to "run wire from the box". I asked my building manager and he confirmed no special wiring is needed nor even allowed w o an act of Congress. So I didn't move forward w the thermostat install. I then learned my neighbor had the same thermostat installed for $300 and the install took 30 minutes. I know contractors overcharge but this is egregious. And they outright lied. read more

Had alhoff heating and cooling out over a week ago for my unit I was told they work on these so after new thermostat that cost 705.00 and a 90.00 dollar service charge . My unit still didnt work So let's jump to today had apt between 9-11 tech shows up to say right away how I don't know why people think we can fix these units now remember I ask before they came out and charged me 90.00 and 750.00. And they were fine with charging me. He goes on to just look at things moves a vent which totally looks ghetto now and said leave open and leave on high all the time that should work I have to leave my boss just called and told me since this was a N/C visit I don't want you to stay there long unbelievable right!!! He also told me if I continue to have problems which I will because nothing was resolved they should send out a senior tech now iam really confused .we don't work on these units but if you have to call which I did after he left they should send out a senior tech . I would post no stars if I could. I was recommended Althoff Home Services from a large Condo Management Company in Chicago. My first experience with them was pleasant to fix a plumbing issue we had in the house albeit very expensive. On the second trip, we called Althoff to take a look at our Furnace due to hearing clicking noises, smelling smoke, and we had just purchased the unit, so an inspection was warranted. The unit was 5 years old and the individual that came out to inspect our unit told us the heat exchange was cracked and at the very least, it needed to be replaced, but he recommended a replacement of the furnace. He also said our CM levels were 90 and the normal level was 20 in the furnace. After hearing this, I thought I should get a second opinion. I had two additional companies in Chicago come out to take a look at the furance and both of them told me there was no issue with the furance and that Althoff did know what they were talking about, and were trying to swindle me. I would never recommend this firm, there over priced service, or their membership plan. If I could give zero stars I would. This place is running a scheme to push revenue where possible. read more

Twice now I've had a plumber from Althoff come out to fix a problem. Once was to replace a water heater and another to fix a leaky pipe. Both times the job was done quickly and professionally. I have seen their HVAC work done at my place of employment and that is great as well. I would recommend them. They take the time to explain what needs to be done as well as any options. read more

We would give it a zero star if we could. They charged us non-refundable $175 to estimate installing a check valve underneath our kitchen sink to prevent the sewage water to come back to the kitchen sinks. They provide a quote of $897 to just install a check valve on a waste line. We can hardly believe the amount they try to charge us. We can purchase a decent check valve from The Home Depot or Lowe's with less than $50. We will not hire them to do the job and will never use their service in future. I recently contracted Althoff Industries to perform some necessary shower repairs at my condo in River North, Chicago. On 10/24, their technician arrived, shut down the building water supply, and replaced the cartridge. The charges for completing that job was $964.40. I felt it was extremely overpriced but approved the estimate in less than 2 minutes as I had no other option. I expected that it would be a frictionless transaction with customer satisfaction guaranteed and no follow up needed. Sadly this turned out to be far from the truth. Later that day the water was once again dripping from the shower. So they were contacted again and came back on 10/25. I dont live at the condo, but had indicated that I would be available by text messages as I had urgent meetings to attend. However they did not communicate with me at all and charged me $393.60 again on Day 2 without my approval. Most frustrating of all, they did not send any receipts or invoices to the email address I had provided and just kept on charging my credit card which was on file with them like its their own personal ATM card. By Friday 10/26, I was frantic. I sacrificed precious family time on Friday evening trying to contact them to get some visibility into the charges being placed. Three days passed before their Director of Residential Services got back to me. He provided perfunctory explanations that debris had gotten into the cartridge necessitating a second visit; and waived Day 2 charges as if this was a major concession. (They shouldnt ever have charged me for Day 2, if it was a botched installation on Day 1). He has not replied to my subsequent emails. I am appalled at their business practices, which seem borderline unethical. 1. If the issue of debris getting in the newly installed cartridge is a common one, necessitating a second visit, expectations ought to be calibrated correctly with customers on the first visit. If not, we cannot rule out the possibility of incorrect installation on Day One. 2. Customers place a sacred trust in a company when they allow a credit card to be placed on file. Don't abuse that trust by placing charges on the card that have not been approved. This is unethical. 3. Customer communication preferences need to be followed. If a customer requests communication by text for estimate approval, texts should be sent prior to the job. 4. Please respond to customer complaints and correspondence. $1000 may not be a lot of money to you, but it certainly is to me for a simple shower cartridge replacement and I feel I am entitled to better service and a more pleasant experience. My perception at this time is that their services are overpriced and business practices unethical. read more

BEWARE! Price gouging! I have been an Althoff customer for years and have a monthly service subscription. I needed a new inducer motor for my furnace. They quoted me $902.00. I looked up the price of the part online using the serial number of my furnace to be absolutely accurate. It was $202.00 for the correct part. That's $700.00 labor charge for a job that takes about an hour! Wow! Even doctors don't make that kind of money! I got another quote from a reputable small business with excellent reviews in the area for $630.00. That's quite a price difference. I called Althoff and asked the reason for this high price and the lady that answered said I was "paying for quality." Quality what? Beware! I will be cancelling my Althoff yearly subscription. What a way to take advantage of their customers. Double check the price of your part and make sure you are not being taken advantage of. read more

Althoff was suggested to me by my condo association's building manager. The technician arrived about an hour early, which fortunately was fine with my schedule. Max, did a great job: he was attentive, and upfront about everything, though he seemed a bit constrained by company policies. My biggest complaint and reason that it is doubtful that I will use your services again is the pricing. When presented with the price for services, I did not realize that they did not include the $115 service fee for just coming on site. I required 2 services: replacement of shut off valve and replacement of broken faucet on my kitchen sink. The quote was $200+ to replace the valve and $450+ to replace the faucet with a new one that I had purchased from home depot. The cost to replace the valve seemed steep, but at that point I did not have much of a choice as i was without a kitchen sink. I asked whey the faucet replacement was so expensive and i was told there is a set price depending on faucet type. So, I ended up replacing the faucet myself while the technician was on site in under 30 minutes, and i was only charged the normal hourly rate during that time. read more

Me and my wife are both disabled senior citizen, they scared my wife telling her that the house was going to burn down in the middle of the night. When I went to management he tried to push me down while telling me he was gonna knock me on my A$$ They did not finish the job or do the work correctl. There electrician burned out two brand new on demand water heaters and our furnace. Our ac does not work now and they won't come out to honor their membership warrant. They tacked another 30,000. On to our bill without explanation and are threatening a lien on the house. This company is high priced because they are unethical. do not use them. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. We had an air conditioner installed in July. In August the unit stopped working and froze over. We've had issues ever since. I called various companies to service the unit as our house is over 80 degrees downstairs and 90 upstairs despite the thermostat being set at 71. The companies have said it should still be under warranty. I called Althoff and was told that the unit was only under warranty until June after the year it was installed. The coil on the unit has repeatedly been frozen or plugged. I don't know if they sold us a faulty unit. But this company does NOT stand behind their work. With so many options I would choose another company. I spoke with a manager who sent someone out on a Sunday. The tech was courteous and provided a temporary fix. He said the company would call on Monday to schedule a diagnostic and more permanent solution. Will update review and adjust rating if warranted. read more

Was very knowledgable and was able to have our furnace fixed same day. Because he really knew what he was doing and came off very trustworthy, we signed up for their Silver Maintenance Plan. Scott P came back to do the maintenance and once again provided excellent service. He spent time explaining everything and made logical and reasonable recommendations. Smart guy who put us at ease about something we know very little to nothing about. Had a bad experience with another company, so this was a welcome relief. He told me he has heard similar before and did not think he could be competitive, even though I asked him to talk to his pricing Manager. I did not hear back from him. Althoff does plumbing work for the association in our downtown Chicago building. They are well respected in the building and do a great job, so I gave them a call when we had a plumbing issue last month. Robert showed up on time, was very professional. He gave a detailed description of the problem and proceeded to fix it. He also had a solution to make routine maintenance easier and prevent recurring issues in the future. While working, Robert laid down a canvas tarp in the work area and neatly put everything back in the cabinet when he was done. I had follow-up contact from Blake to make sure I was happy with the service. I am extremely satisfied with the work Althoff did and will call them in the future. read more

We have an annual service contact. We received a letter stating a date and 2 hour window for our AC technician to arrive a call the night before confirm the time. On the day of the appointment I sat at home during the 2 hour window waiting for the technician to arrive. I received a call at the end of those two hours saying the technician was running late and would not be arriving for another hour. This put the maintenance window from 5-7pm. We have used Althoff for many years and we're so very disappointed in the decline in service we have seen over the last couple years.
