    Meat and cheese board
    Ina F.

After walking all over Salzburg, we ducked into this restaurant for dinner and let me tell you...it was one of the top meals we had on the trip. The meat and cheese plate we started with was so delicious. The house spread they had was reminiscent of a cheese pimento spread and was so good paired with the various meats and pickles/onion. The ham hock had the crispiest skin and the most tender meat. We shredded the meat so we could increase the surface area to mop up the sauce it came with. It was absolutely one of the best dishes I've had. The sampler was also good and the house sauces that came with it complimented the dish. I'm back in the US and I still think of this meal! If you are in Salzburg, do stop in. You won't regret it!

We stopped here in between sightseeing and shopping in Salzburg. The staff were very friendly and were very welcoming towards us as Americans. Someone in our group spoke German but they must have spotted us as Americans and just started speaking English. The food was fantastic. Our soups were amazing and the main courses we had for lunch were delicious!

Visiting Salzburg, even in the off-season in November, required reservations at practically every restaurant we visited. Alter Fuchs (Old Fox) was willing to squeeze us in at a table before another party arrived for a later reservation. The menu was very large with over 50 dishes easily - usually a bad sign in my experience. Our table ordered a good mix of dishes including the veal schnitzel, cordon bleu pork, and dumpling medley. Each person raved about their food. The dumplings, which I ordered, were fabulous. One was cubed ham, another sausage, and the third was caramelized onion I believe. The horseradish sauce was phenomenal as was the sauce already on the dumplings. For beer, they had a German Zwicklbier on tap that was served in a ceramic steinkrug - a nice touch!

Schwein wiener schnitzel. Breading crisp and delicious.

We actually came here for back-to-back dinners- first on Christmas night (December 25) and then again the next night. Another restaurant we wanted to try was closed both nights and the chestnut soup and creamy bacon cabbage here were so incredibly good they made a second visit a no-brainer. The pumpkin soup with cinnamon croutons was merely average and should be skipped. The chestnut soup was salty, sweet, thick and creamy... in my mind pure perfection in a bowl. I will go ahead and warn you that splitting a bowl will merely result in a dispute over who got more, so get your one! (a bowl, after all, is less than 4 Euro). The wild boar wiener schnitzel had a breadcrumb crust that was crispy and came with bonus accoutrements of creamy bacon cabbage and deep-fried potato/pumpkin balls. A drizzle of a rendered syrup on the plate for smearing the balls into was complex and divine. The schwein (pork) wiener schnitzel was also very good- again the crust was perfectly crisp and miraculously did not get soggy even with plenty of lemon squeezes and jam. The tiny noodle dumplings with cheese came out in a skillet with just the right amount of char to lend a bit of chewy-crunch to nearly every bite. Every other entrée or starter I saw come from the kitchen looked appetizing. The apple strudel comes with a side of ice cream and was memorable in part because it was just the right amount of sweet. We managed to acquire a generous side order of the bacon cabbage the second night we visited and it was so delicious. The schnitzel comes in generous portions and can easily be split if you order a soup or a side or two. Wine and beer runs less than 4 Euro a glass or mug, and our tabs were merely in the 30-40 Euro range before adding the standard 10% tip. American Express and Visa are accepted. The subterranean atmosphere is all alpine farmhouse mixed in with foxes' den, with red and white checked tablecloths, wooden tables and chairs, and four legged stuffed creatures peering at you from their perches above the bar. The restaurant gets crowded early, so if you do not count yourself in the early-bird crowd, I'd highly recommend getting a reservation. Finally, the restaurant is sparsely staffed so flagging down your server and a bit of patience will serve you well.

For ambience, service and the Tafelspitz alone, I am giving this place 4 stars. Dessert here, in particular the Kaiserschmarrn is rubbish and tasted dry and spongy. I would definitely come back here for dinner and main course but, choose someplace else for dessert. We arrived without a reservation and they were quick to give us a table despite being busy. The place was packed and yet, not noisy. It's decorated in simple colors and furniture and the staff are wearing traditional wear. The menu is extensive and has many Austrian and Alpine specialities. They have a nice selection of drinks and about 6-8 wines to choose from. I ordered the tafelspitz and it came out swimming in a broth of boiled potatoes and spices. It was divine and the best I have had so far. The broth was intense and I licked the whole plate clean ;-)) The others in my group enjoyed their meals too and we ended up closing the place down ;-)) I would happily come here again just for the amazing tafelspitz ;-))

Foxes everywhere! Came here for my anniversary dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it. This restaurant is cozy and definitely reminds you of an underground fox den. The food is traditional Austrian/German fare, and everything was delicious. I'm not a huge fan of German food in general (always seems bland to me, and I swear if I have to eat another dumpling or sausage...), but everything here was great. We ordered the specials of the night--a creamy pumpkin puree soup with cinnamon croutons (YUM), a beet puree with a cream cheese and horseradish dumpling, and the wild boar schnitzel served with potato dumplings (think: a wild boar version of chicken fried steak with ball of mashed potatoes). All of this, of course with a side of giant pretzel. Everything tasted absolutely fantastic. Our service was top knotch--especially considering that there was 1 waiter working the floor and it was packed with the dinner rush. He was patient, attentive, and never made it feel like we were waiting very long for any of our dishes. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to sample good, traditional Austrian food.

We ordered Lamb chops with frites and beans and Veal cutlets (Wiener Schnitzel). Food came quickly and didn't disappoint. Service was friendly throughout and the ambience perfect. This place has an underground tavern like ambience and we happened upon it by chance. It is a bit pricey, but otherwise, a good experience.

Cozy little restaurant in a nice location. Good service. The beer was okay. The food though, was well worth the visit. I had the Gordon Bleu which was very good. The Veal Schnitzel was amazing. The batter was seasoned well. It was cooked just perfectly and the sauce complimented the taste just ru. Highly recommend the schnitzel. The potatoes that went along with both meals were tasty as well. Definitely recommend stopping by.

    Radish salad
    Delectable Dumpling Y.

Service was great and there is a lovely secluded seating area in the back if the street side seating is full. You'll want to get an extra helping of the radish salad! Fresh, softly tangy - a real treat! The signature ham hock or schweinsteltze is big enough to share but unfortunately the meat is tough and dry and certainly did not falloff the bone. The crackled skin was either tough and chewy or chip-tooth-hard instead of the succulent chicharon that I have had at other places. The soup was the decent savory goodness on par with all Austrian restaurants. Given the typical high standards of pork dishes in Austria, the disappointing signature dish made me downgrade the experience to a 2star because plenty of other places to go in the immediate walking vicinity.

I had excellent macaroni and cheese here. Also amazing pretzels. Salzburg is very cold. The inside was very old school.

Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

During our first visit to Salzburg in 2009, we asked our hotelier to recommend a genuine Austrian…read morerestaurant - one that did not offer "Menus for tourists" and that prepared authentic dishes. He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.
