It looks like there are several dining areas with different decor and ambiance (including an al fresco bier garten). We chose the upstairs dining area which was near to the very nice "Kid's Corner" which the "almost" four year old enjoyed while waiting for his lunch (ordered from a decent "children's menu"). The beer selection was limited (including their own brand) but decent. I ordered leberknödel suppe. The broth was quite plain and lacking in the umami I'd expect from a well prepared and seasoned broth. The flavor of the knödel was decent but the texture was very dense, requiring a knife to break it down into bite size pieces. I prefer leberknödel to be dense enough to hold together but light enough to break apart with the soup spoon. Finally, though the service was prompt, the demeanor of our waiter was not particularly hospitable. Your experience may be different, but this was mine.

Nice atmosphere with standard biergarten fare located in a courtyard. The restrooms are very clean. @sturdygirlstyle #sturdygirkstyle

We were looking for Austrian food and stumbled on this courtyard beer garden in Old Town Salzburg. Seemed pretty touristy but the food didn't disappoint, though the beer was watered down. Goulash was flavorful and the bratwurst was decent. Service was prompt but could've been less hurried. We had a decent time but there are other options worth exploring.

One of our top meals in Austria. Several dining options and experiences under one roof. We ate in the front room, a stylish bistro. It was a memorable experience - thoughtful service, delicious beer abound cuisine.

You must try the soup-fle with drips of cherries. Its a secret menu item. Other hits include the goooolash and potatoe cakes. All jokes aside. Much like others, we came here w/no reservations and they let us sit which was great. None of the research I did on the area mentioned getting reservations. Got the beef goulash which was decent. The chefs special was pretty good also, soft veal parts. The dumplings were nice and the potatoe au gratin not at all like i expected. If you didnt make a reservation anywhere when you arrived, come here. Nice ambiance and food

Was having a hard time finding any place to dine without reservations on a busy Sunday long holiday weekend. Thankfully we happened upon this place and they had the dishes we still had left to try - the famous nockrel dessert and goulash! We crossed our fingers and toes hoping we would be seated. This was the only place we came across that had an actual hostess and a line where you can wait to be seated instead of turned away. We waited about ten minutes before we were seated in one of the many wings of the restaurant. Love Le the ambiance and grand paintings capturing Austrian history throughout the eatery. We ordered the goulash, a small sausage plate, and were glad they had a single serving of the nockrel since it was just the two of us sharing. The goulash was fantastic - super flavorful. It made me want to learn to make it at home! Same for Nockrel, my new favorite dessert. Very fluffy and light with a tart fruit compote balancing the sweetness. Disappointed in the small sausage plate - hubby thought he was going to get some wurst but instead it was a plate of sliced hot dogs in water with red onions...not what we were expecting. Overall would definitely recommend this spot for anyone wanting amazing goulash or a single serving of nockrel. The service was painstakingly slow but that seems to be the norm. Our bill for two drinks, an entree, small plate, and dessert came out to under $50!

After a long day walking Christkindlmarkt, we needed an escape from the crowds and an ale or two to settle our nerves. (I kid, really - the market wasn't *that* bad, we just wanted to sample some of the local brews.) It was a bit confusing trying to find the right spot for us to post up for a bit - there's a bar and a restaurant and what seemed like a more upscale club-type place. After a bit of roaming, we made our way into the bar and sat down at one of the tables. They weren't very crowded when we got there, but not long after, people started coming in in waves. They had to lock one of the entrance doors by our table, and started making people wait to be seated. Through all that, we ordered a couple beers - the Stern Bier, since it was the house specialty. It wasn't terrible, but it was a bit bland on first sip, and took a while to "liven up" on the palate. While we were sitting there, we heard the waiter grumbling a bit about the number of tourists walking through the door. I thought that incredibly rude, considering WE were tourists, and the sheer number of people should have equaled good business for him and the company. It wasn't long after that incident that I noticed one of the female bartenders loudly sneeze - TWICE - into her hands...and then promptly grab a glass to serve up some wine. After letting out a loud (and completely involuntary) "EWWWWW!", I fled as quickly as possible, leaving my perplexed husband behind to settle the bill. He shivered appropriately after I told him what I'd witnessed, and we quick-stepped it out of the restaurant compound in search of things that didn't make our skin crawl.

We're having lunch here in the cool and shady garden. The menu has the usual touristy things like bratwurst, wienerschnitzel, and apple strudel, along with some interesting dishes like a marinated vegetable salad with whipped cream cheese. We couldn't decide on which dessert to share so we had two to share: beignets, and crepes filled with cranberry jam. Delicious.

I have no complaints. Tasty food. I dont really know how authentic it is. But it was good. Good service, quick seating in the garden area where the temperature was perfect.

Upon wandering around Salzburg I happened upon Sternbraü's charming outdoor restaurant and knew I had to enjoy the ambiance and have a meal here. I will say it is a large space and filled up quick, I was lucky to have wandered in about 10 min before the crowd because as it was lunch I didn't think to make a reservation. The ambiance is cute, outdoors but shade provided by trees in the courtyard. The Service was good, the beer was good. I ordered a schnitzel (my second of the trip) and it was meh. As others had mentioned a heavier breading and a bit overcooked. It really was nothing to write home about. But all in all it was a pleasant experience. I would probably give them another try but try something else. You want my advice steer clear of the schnitzel and just enjoy your time there and maybe get a wurst.

Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

During our first visit to Salzburg in 2009, we asked our hotelier to recommend a genuine Austrian…read morerestaurant - one that did not offer "Menus for tourists" and that prepared authentic dishes. He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.
