If I'm being honest, there were two points where I thought to myself, "I might have chosen poorly, when booking here." The first was when I had to change our reservation time - I went back online and saw they had openings pretty much all day long. (My cynical mind went, "why?") The second was when we arrived, and walked in to a tiny and packed bar area.
I'm happy to report that any doubts or fears were promptly squashed the second our waiter led us to our table, in the dining room, through the bar area.
The dining room isn't large, but it was modern and bright, and very comfortable. There were only a handful of parties already at tables when we sat down, but by the time we left, they were packed to the gills.
Our first point of business was - you guessed it - beer! I went with a Stiegl-Goldbräu, because it was known to me and because the restaurant didn't have a Dunkel (apparently Dunkel Bier isn't as popular in Austria as I'd hoped).
The entree I chose was the Austrian Cheese Dumplings, mostly because it came with a side green salad (thank goodness). My husband went with the Veal Goulash, and also got a side salad.
The spaetzle was good, but way too rich. It was also served at the same time as the green salad, so it had a chance to cool and congeal as I finished the starter. It's unfortunate, because allowing it to cool meant it lost that ooey-gooey factor that was so appealing.
Was the dish good? Yes, it had good flavor and the dumplings themselves were soft and retained the bite of the cheese. Would I order it again, or would I recommend it as an entree for a friend? No, I don't think I would. Or, maybe I would recommend it to those that enjoy these kinds of stick-to-your-ribs hearty meals, but I would suggest that they request the salad to be served ahead of the spaetzle, to ensure the dumplings are served piping hot. Or maybe you just need to eat the dumplings first, and salad last? The dish has a smattering of fried onions served on top, and I will say that the crunchy texture of those onions helped break up the creamy richness of the dumplings.
The salad, by the way, was de-freaking-lightful. I don't know what it is about simple green salads in Germany and Austria, but they know what the heck they're doing with those dishes.
My husband's goulash, meanwhile, quickly disappeared from his plate. He said that the meat was the best he'd had since the start of our trip, and was able to enjoy his small spaetzle serving, as he at least had the goulash sauce to help break up the cheesiness factor.
My second pint of beer a Stiegl-Paracelsus Bio-Zwickl, at the recommendation of my husband. He was right that it had really good flavor - both toasted and malty - and that I'd enjoy it. In fact, we wanted to take our time with our drinks, so we ordered a dessert. Of course.
Why we thought a Spelt Pancake with Poppy Seed ice cream was a good idea, I still don't know, but before we knew it, our waiter was bringing the plate to our table.
The pancake was similar to a crepe, wrapped burrito-style around a couple small scoops of poppy seed ice cream. That sounds weird, right? It is, but it also really worked. Neither element was overly sweet, and the poppy seed ice cream added a nutty, earthy flavor that we both really enjoyed.
We would have stuck around a bit longer to take advantage of the warmth and atmosphere, but the restaurant was filling up and we had tickets to a concert at Hohensalzburg that we had to get to.
Our waiter was incredibly friendly, and extremely apologetic when cashing us out, as he'd been run ragged by all the parties in the dining room. The poor guy was working that whole space by himself! He also negotiated his tip *down*, for crying out loud. We tried to tip him really well - both for his service and for the fact that he was working on Christmas night - but he wouldn't hear of it. We tried arguing at first, but I made my husband stop when I realized we were making the waiter a bit uncomfortable. He chose the tip amount that he felt good about, and we were on our merry way. My husband was still in shock, but I reminded him that we couldn't impose our American way on that sweet Austrian waiter.
This was a great find. We would absolutely come back the next time we're in Salzburg. read more
