This was another place we stumbled into randomly. We saw they had dry-aged steaks and that sold us. Well, the dry-aged ribeye was the toughest ribeye I have had in a long time. It was cooked correctly, but we were hoping it was going to be tender. The steak got 3 stars. 1 star was added back for the Nockerl. It was amazingly fluffy and delicious! We would go back to try something else, and get the dessert again.

Very quaint place right in the heart of Salzburg. While I didn't go crazy and try everything on their menu, I did taste the asparagus soup and a super large beer...and both were pleasing on the taste buds. Service was exceptional and everything seemed to be reasonably priced for Salzburg prices. This place is quite touristy, however. The couple next to me began chatting with me and what do ya know? We are from the same area. Cool, yes. But would rather get to know a local...but then again, this is my fault for fleeing from the rain at a restaurant right in the middle of the city. Nevertheless, this place offered quite a fantastic and memorable experience!

    Loved that lemon beer.

Only a stone throw away from Mozart's birthplace is what they advertise. So what? The food was average though I did enjoy the Austrian vegetable soup and the lemon beer was refreshing. Service was a bit snooty and prices are steep but the atmosphere is very nice.

Delicious lunch of spinach dumplings with parmesan and arugula, as well as beef carpaccio with a field salad. Service ok. A good local find.

Dinner here was fine, but not the 4.5 star experience Yelp led us to believe. Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

During our first visit to Salzburg in 2009, we asked our hotelier to recommend a genuine Austrian…read morerestaurant - one that did not offer "Menus for tourists" and that prepared authentic dishes. He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.
