After trekking more than 10 kms today it was an obvious, and as it turned out, brilliant choice. It was fairly busy but our server, from the Netherlands originally, was great. He patiently explained the menu offerings as his English was far superior than my German will ever be. It's very nice inside with a couple of coolers housing large cuts of beef on display. Turns one of the owners is a butcher by trade, and the other a wine sommelier, nice combination. I ordered the goulash and the lovely K garnered the final cut of Dry Aged Entrecôte available for the evening and we shared a green salad. The salad sat on top of nicely boiled potatoes, which was something we have never experienced, but will surely steal as an idea. The goulash was excellent, and the steak absolutely brilliantly cooked medium rare. Finally the wine was also top drawer, and the beer excellent. What really made the experience a six stars out of five was our server. We were amongst the last cold there so we had a chance to talk with him about the restaurant, its owners and origins as well as some personal stories. We've ate well on this trip to Europe, but this meal experience will most certainly be at the top of the list.

The food and beer were excellent, but unfortunately we were forced to sit next to a group that made fun of us and other English-speaking diners for the entirety of our meal--we don't speak German very well but understand it well enough to know what they were saying. Worse, the server egged them on, although she acted friendly when speaking to us in English. Really disappointing because this is a cool spot that we wanted to support away from the typical tourist area; but we were so uncomfortable and felt so unwelcome that our meal was totally ruined.

This is even better than schnitzel in Vienna, its birthplace. The owner/chef is amazing. Really nice guy who came out to check on us after the server informed him we were back after being here 8 years ago. The schnitzel is cooked in clarified butter and is superb! Just the right thickness, golden brown and as flavorful as it gets. Served with lingonberries and parsley potatoes. You'd never guess this place would be this good from outside, it has a small sign, is under a hotel add had a large bar area that greets you when you walk in. Doesn't look like anything special, but take my word, just terrific. Every bit as good as 8 years ago. The salad was great as well. We ordered Kaiserschmarrn as well and it was also one of the best we've ever had. If you like schnitzel, you OWE yourself a trip here when in Salzburg.

And drink, of course. Gablerbräu wasn't technically open when we stopped in (about five minutes before their official open time), but the awesome waiter at the door invited us in from the cold, and told us to grab a table at the dining room in the back. Once settled, he came back to our table to offer menus and get our beer orders. I went with a Gösser Märzen, and my husband ordered their Hausbier. After a bit of menu perusing, we both decided to go for their Schnitzel. The scents coming from the kitchen as we sat there, sipping our beers (the Märzen initially disappointed based on the color alone, but I did enjoy the malty flavor and the hint of a hoppy bite) got my stomach grumbling. I don't know what they were cooking up, but the scents of roasted meat, fresh bread, garlic and spices had me practically drooling in expectation. The schnitzel did not disappoint, though I do wish I'd chosen another dish - only because I now wish we had sampled more than one of their offerings. The breading on the schnitzel was crisp, never got soggy, and the meat was juicy and flavorful. The potatoes were buttery, and the tart bite provided by the cranberry-like sauce added another nice layer. We finished our meal with a second pint (I went with the Hausbier for my second round, following my husband's glowing review of it. I did enjoy it - it had an unexpected dark flavor and a bit of hoppiness) and a lot of fun conversation with our waiter.
