I called Bastrop Providence Funeral Home a few hours before she passed in ICU. There was not even one slight interruption for the process to get underway. From the first phone call, to the day we walked out with my wife's ashes, they were empathetic, understanding and professional in guiding us through this powerful emotional ordeal. They helped us through this incredible challenge making us feel secure in the mourning process. Brandon, the Funeral Director, was involved in helping us from the beginning to the very end. He was incredibly kind, compassionate and caring. He came to our home to explain everything, in part, because I am a disabled military veteran. Emma, part of the aftercare support team, was so good at being there as an emotional pillar of support. Her gentle communication always made me feel like I was never alone in this terribly trying time.

There are several entry points at the front and rear of the property. It is well taken care of and manicured. It is a very large piece of property with thousands of markers. This is still an active cemetery with some recent interments. If you're a Smithville resident it'll cost you $1000 and nonresidents are $2000 each to make this your forever home. Near the front of the property next to a pagoda, you'll find all the listings of the graves. Even the 10 photos included do not do this place justice.

It's very close to Highway 20 and Shiloh Road, which is just on the outskirts of Bastrop, Texas. In order to find it, you'll have to turn into a school parking lot and then very quickly veer left onto a single lane dirt road and follow it about 1000 feet until you arrive. This is still very much an active cemetery for the local residents. It sits on about 3 to 5 acres and still has additional room in case you're interested. After scanning many of the headstones, it is primarily an African-American cemetery judging by the headstones and porcelain portraits affixed to those markers. It has a single gravel road that dead ends at the back of the cemetery. There's a lot of randomness as to how the graves are arranged with lots of flowers left by loved ones. I did not spot any headstones from the 1800s, the vast majority are from the latter part of the 20th century and on. There were a few service members buried here and most of the graves have granite headstones, but some are in the cheaper cast concrete. It's a quiet place, but you can still hear the traffic on Highway 20 not far away.

This cemetery serves the small community of McDade. There are quite a number of headstones from the turn of the 20th century, but there are many newer ones, including some very recent burials. For the most part, the headstones are neatly arranged in columns with designated family plots and there is a gravel road with a few entry points. This is still an active cemetery with several new recent interments and there's plenty of room at the rear of the cemetery to accommodate hundreds more. The cemetery seems to be relatively well cared for although there are some toppled stones within the 6-8 acre property. The oldest headstone that I could find was from 1904. There are quite a number of service members buried here, including a confederate one. After looking at the headstones, I did not spot any particularly notable names of local Texas history.

This is still an active cemetery with just a handful of graves on it with much more room for future residents. There is an access point on Caldwell Lane, but unfortunately it looks like someone just drove right through the gate destroying it. There is no sign denoting the name of the cemetery but there is another cemetery nearby called Comanche Cemetery North. Considering its location I was surprised to see that the grass was well mowed and the graves were well tended. However being such a small cemetery there is no road of any sort leading into it so you'll just have to park just past the gate. The primary name that I could find here was Haws and in the corner of the cemetery is a large oak tree that obscures some fallen older gravestones. I did not spot any historical names here, unlike the nearby Hainy Church cemetery. It should be pointed out that just a couple hundred feet south of the cemetery lie additional headstones in a field along Caldwell. However, they are not as easily seen because this field is overgrown with weeds and the graves don't appear to be cared for. There's not a whole lot to see at this site, but there's room enough to make it your forever home.
