It's beautiful, old, and fairly unkept (weeds, vines, stickers, fire ants). Drivable/accessible. Susanna Dickinson - section 1, Lot 363 located in the southwest end of the old cemetery. Including info because it's hard to find specifics. Blurry map available online. Bio: Susanna Dickinson was the wife of Captain Almaron Dickinson and was the sole adult Anglo survivor that witnessed the massacre at the Battle of the Alamo. On the morning of March 6, 1836, as the troops of General Antonio López de Santa Anna stormed the mission, Captain Dickinson ran to his wife, reported that all was lost, and expressed hope that she could save herself and their child. Although he died at the Alamo, his wife and child Angelina survived. Following the fall of the Alamo, Susanna was escorted from the Alamo mission, interviewed by Santa Anna himself and sent by him with a message to Sam Houston. She was a strong woman survivor and remained a patriot of Texas, but the memory of those days would haunt her the rest of her life. Bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith

The older section of Oakwood cemetery is just as painted by literature and movies - crumbled down gravestones, crawling vines, unnamed dead, multiple generations of families buried together, and wrought iron fencing. Go find the graves of John Henry Faulk, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, and Ima Hogg! I hope I have not disturbed any of the dead during my visits there or my Yelp review. I simply like to stroll through Oakwood and take in the haunted beauty. Just thought I'd share one of my favorite, lesser known spots.

During the services we were impressed with the order and professionalism Allen Dave and Namon Thomas provided for our loved one. Little did I know that three months after my mother-in-law's death I would lose my precious mother also. Once again we contacted the professionals to assist during this mournful time. Since 2011, we have called on their services for my sister in 2015, an aunt in 2019, a brother in 2022 and most recently a brother in May of 2025. When you are in need you can "trust" that your family member will be treated with the utmost respect from the professionals at Allen Dave Funeral Home. We have built a "Relationship" with them. When your time comes they will answer the call. Arthur Chenier.

No matter how emotionally prepared you think that you may be for the death of a loved one, you're not. Add to that moment all of the phone calls, the family saddened by the news and trying to make arrangements. Because there was a Pre-Need policy secured in advance, Allen Dave Funeral Homes did an excellent job at removing a load of stress with just one phone call. He was understanding and and handled the conversation of death with delicacy. He told the family "I got this, and he did." He made a tough process beautiful and enjoyable. Thank you for caring for my friend's family so well. They were all very pleased. I didn't mean to write a book, but Great job Allen Dave!

Glenn even stayed with us at the office until 11pm one night to make sure things were done right and with enough time to get everything done. I was told I couldn't see his body. At the burial, the director came up to the casket and noticeably made sure it was locked. This was only a peek into the overall shadiness that surrounded what I feel was one of many things. After signing a contract and paying them, they 1st changed the obituary to add some strangers saying they were his family and took me out. When addressed, she changed it back for a day and finally removing his remembrance all together. They are not fact checkers and have been ridiculously disrespectful to my the actual family of my husband and have disregarded any and all truth about his life and wants and facts. They care nothing of the legacy of the deceased, only that you continue to trust them and make sure you pay. The obituary is something that everyone should be able to read and know my Chris. I've wondered why the parking lot is empty and now I know. They do nothing according to follow legal procedure and or even acknowledge that there is one. Truth is a funny thing. If if doesn't come out when you wash the dirt away, it will in the rinse.mGood Luck .

From the first phone call, to the day we walked out with my wife's ashes, they were empathetic, understanding and professional in guiding us through this powerful emotional ordeal. They helped us through this incredible challenge making us feel secure in the mourning process. Brandon, the Funeral Director, was involved in helping us from the beginning to the very end. Emma, part of the aftercare support team, was so good at being there as an emotional pillar of support. This time, however, a few things slipped through the cracks which tarnished the experience for me: One small thing: The invoice itemization didn't add up to the total at the bottom. No problem after they looked it up and gave me an explanation (they had neglected to list one item). One medium thing: The funeral director with whom we met did not have us review and confirm the information the nursing home had forwarded to them. As a result Mom's home address was wrong on the death certificate, and I would have had to pay (and wait weeks) for it to be corrected, so I took the funeral home's advice and just left it the way it was. One BIG thing: My mother's makeup was awful, just awful... shockingly awful. Since we had a graveside service only, the first time we saw her was at the graveside & it was too late to make any adjustments. The spackle they caked on her hands and face was so thick that it was actually cracking and flaking off. They had applied lipstick and mascara, but NO EYEBROWS. My 94-yr-old mother had lost her natural brows many years ago, and would never allow anyone to see her until she had drawn on replacements with an eyebrow pencil. Somehow the funeral home's makeup artist missed that crucial part of the process (even though they were working from photos), so now my mom will spend eternity looking like some sort of alien being. Rants out of the way, I will say that everyone there was very nice and very helpful--the fellow who picked up Mom's body from the nursing home, the funeral director, the office assistant, the gentlemen who transported the casket to the cemetery. And whoever fixed Mom's hair did an excellent job!
