First time visit to Evergreen Cemetery…read more Travis Audubon and Austin Parks & Recreation scheduled a group event here, birding and exploring one of Austin's historic cemeteries. Established in 1926 as a public cemetery to serve the African American communities of Travis County, this place is also home to mature live oaks, pecans and cedar elms, and is flanked by woodlands that support a nice variety of birds. It's always nice to learn a bit more about the city one lives in, and of the people who helped make Austin what is is today.

It is located at Airport Boulevard and 12th St. Many of the people buried here were born in the 1800s. This site would've been just on the outskirts of Austin back in the day, but of course it is surrounded on all sides by urbanization today. This is a nicely manicured and well cared for graveyard with a couple of port-a-pottys on site. You could easily spend an entire day here reading names. You can find graves that date from the 1800s all the way to the present day including many military service members. There is probably about a mile worth of roadway winding through cemetery. I drove through the entire graveyard but I never found a place where you could find a comprehensive listing of all those interred here. One other thing I was surprised not to find was a Texas historical sign that would've had some good historical information concerning the cemetery. I'm quite certain there are some very influential people from Austin's history buried within the confines. There are some posted scan codes throughout the cemetery that do give some historical insights . This is definitely one of the nicest graveyards within the Austin area. Check out the photos below.

This is still an active cemetery with plenty of room for more decedents and the most recent graves are from 2022. The cemetery is easily accessed and has a dirt lane that circles the cemetery. It occupies roughly about 4 acres and most of the burials have taken place in the last 50 years. There are quite a number of service members buried here, but I did not find any WWI vets. Weed Corley and Fish picked her up and I was given contact info for Ingur at Austin Cremations. 1. 4/22/17-Ingur made initial call. said she would send some docs to my email. I opened email which did not seem mobile compatible, and the docs were exhaustive and confusing with no direction from AC on what to sign etc. I replied that I would prefer to come in and do Business in person. AC sent an appt time and the address to the location. 2.4/24/17- The location is just a small office in an industrial park. It does not appear that the office is staffed daily. But probably just for when people prefer to come in person. I was met in the office by Mitzi who seemed to be annoyed that I brought my 1 yr old son. Unfortunately I have no family in town and my mom used to watch my son full time, so with her sudden passing I was left with no option but to bring him in. I apologized for having to bring him, but set him up with some toys and a blanket to play on. Mitzi said she was just recovering from "something" and would not prefer to touch the child or otherwise she would have offered to help with him, so she said but somehow I doubt that. She was very cold, indifferent to the whole thing it felt like. If it was a hospital I would have said she had a very cold bedside manner. I was crying because I never thought at 32 I would be making arrangements for my mother. During paperwork, my son had a dirty diaper and needed to be changed. I asked if I could change him in the restroom and she hesitated for an awkwardly long time and looked put out by my question. I said " oh don't worry about it I will just change him right here" I pulled out my diaper pad, changed him right there on the office floor and then walked to their VERY nice restroom to throw it away and wash my hands. I finished paperwork and I left shortly after that. 3.4/28/17 she had emailed a document to me but I didn't know if I was supposed to sign or if my step dad was supposed to sign so I reached out and called twice and sent a text to get further clarification. She finally called back on May 1st and said she had phone trouble. In this day and age. Phone trouble with your personal cell phone that you use constantly for business purposes to be out of service for that many days, seems implausible. 3 days with no service? I highly doubt that. 4. 5/1/2017 When I finally got a call back she was very rude to me. Her exact words were "so you haven't signed that paper? Well I can't get any of THIS started until I get that doc back!" I explained that this was my first death and after life planning to deal with so I needed her patience and guidance to help we thru it. I sent back the doc. I also asked where my mother's rings were going to be so I could pick them up, hospice couldn't get them off her hand when she passed due to swelling. Mitzi said she didn't have any rings. I asked her to please make the call to the downtown facility and double check. She called me back shortly and said my mother was not wearing any rings. She knew that for sure. Etc. etc. so we began to panic as it didn't cross our minds at the time that we would need to worry about where the rings would go after she was taken. 5.5/15/2017- after multiple calls from me, my step dad, and my uncle over the last two weeks my uncle was able to make contact at 10am. We needed to pick up death certificates for a legal issue. I was not contacted by AC until 1pm that same day that the DC's were ready and needed to be picked up today before 3 pm. Really I have been trying to contact for two weeks and you give me a two hour window to come by and pick them up? So thankfully I was able to make arrangements and come pick up the DC's as I was told. NO ONE PREPARED ME for the fact that my mother's ashes were there/ready AND THE RINGS WERE THERE! The rings that I thought were lost forever! The rings MITZI ASSURED ME were not there or in their possession and that my mother wasn't wearing ANY jewelry. I was overcome by emotion at the sight of the black box and the rings. I had to call in for the rest of the day at work because I was too emotional. OVERALL my experience was AWFUL. They seemed unorganized, unconcerned and unresponsive. I guess I should add I mostly dealt with MITZI but the idea of her as a Funeral director haunts me. -4/12/2018. I wrote this last year and saved in my drafts for nearly a year. But with the anniversary of my mom's passing coming near, the nightmare they caused became fresh again and I am posting this now in efforts to maybe save someone else some heartache and grief.

She said that was their pricing policy. When I told her to put them back in the box she said I would not be refunded. Way to rip off grieving families when they aren't thinking straight. I also did not appreciate the fact that they don't invite you to come inside. Instead, they're just going to hand me everything through my car window. It's like I'm picking up something from a store. Very disappointed. It can't be because of Covid. It's January 2023.

This is a very large cemetery with thousands of headstones sitting in a well manicured area of at…read moreleast a 5 to 10 acres. It sits next to Elgin Elementary school and across from Elgin intermediate school. Behind the cemetery is a small park with a pond. There are many graves from the 1800s, but this is still an active graveyard with some fresh additions. If you're looking for a particular grave, they do have a records building, but you will have to call the number pictured below to make an appointment. The cemetery has three entrances which allow for cars to drive in on the gravel roads. I was surprised not to find a Texas historical sign, only a marker. If you find yourself in the Elgin downtown area and you enjoy walking through old cemeteries, or if you're looking for a future forever home, you may wish to check this place out. check out the photos below for more information.

I've driven down Lamar Boulevard thousands of times and I never knew this graveyard sat just a few…read morehundred feet from the road. It sits directly behind the walnut creek Baptist church on top of a hill. There are graves that date as far back to the 1880s, but most are from the 20th century and newer. It is a well-maintained and manicured cemetery with a road that allows you to drive into it. The most notable names I saw in numbers here were Gault and Neans. To a lesser extent there was also Morrow and Sweet. I did not find a Texas historical marker nor did I see anywhere that had a full listing of those interred here. It's possible the church next to the graveyard may well have that information. The cemetery appears to have almost reached near capacity, but there's still a little space left for future residents. This cemetery is located outside the Austin city limits and just north of Manor. The thing that…read moresets this cemetery apart from others, is the fact that it is for the indigent, and for those who cannot afford their own funeral. The cemetery is quite large as it sits on 99 acres. It does have a small parking lot for about a dozen cars and porta potties. If you qualify for a Travis county burial, you are entitled to a 20 minute service for a group of up to 20 people. They do offer a 9:30 am and an 11:30 am service time. Travis county has two such cemeteries, this being the largest one. At this point in time, there's only a few hundred burials here, and there is a section set aside for infants and children. The graves are laid out with concrete borders with name plates on the border itself, but you can erect your own small head stone should you choose.
