Unfortunately, the service was the biggest disappointment. The restaurant was packed, and the atmosphere felt more concerned with maintaining an image than making guests feel welcome. I understand some restaurants embrace a more reserved European style of service, but this came across as cold and pretentious rather than intentional hospitality. As a solo diner especially, I didn't feel acknowledged or valued as a guest. It also didn't help that the dining room had a noticeable body odor smell that took away from the experience. On a positive note, the bathroom was clean and beautifully designed. I originally thought this would become my go-to place to grab a glass of wine while waiting for a table at the ramen spot next door, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Reading through other reviews, it seems I'm not the only one who had this impression. Oakland's charm has always been its people. You can open a French-inspired wine bar, but hospitality translates into every language. If you're going to bring a Parisian aesthetic to Oakland, don't mistake indifference for sophistication. The first time I visited, I was only expecting to have a simple drink or two and it turned into a 2 hour adventure; drinking and chatting it up with the patrons here. The selection is great too! I made a reservation to celebrate my friends' 50th birthday for 3:30pm outdoors. We arrived about 30minutes early and checked in w/the hostess. She veered us towards the back wall, where we could order a couple glasses of champagne while we waited. The young man that helped us decide which dry brut we wanted was great (bar)! We were seated before 3:30 and the metal tables can be slippery and ours was too small for everything to fit. I ended up knocking my $18 1/2 glass of champagne on the ground where it shattered (I have tremors in hands) - not a single employee came by to ask if we were ok, to clean it up, move us to another table or offer to fill my glass back up 1/2 way. This is within the first 15minutes of sitting. Our server was a ghost. She had on this dark purple, pinstriped shirt (not hard to miss) and would walk by and tell us she'd be "right back!". All she did was check in when we were first seated to ask what we wanted, before we read the menus. She didn't ask our prefereces, she didn't go over any specialty wines or specials. I was very disappointed with the entire experience. We both got the red flights on top of our champagne. We ony liked two reds and the pours were so small, it was truly difficult to tell all the depth, character and full bodiness of them. We bought no wine bottles.And, no one encouraged a sale either. I was going to get the JFJ white bubbly, but this place with its poor service, tiny pours (not even 2oz) and even tinier charcuterie plate serving sizes wasn't worth it (salami, goat cheese w/oil, espresso cheese, 1/4 baquette w/oil). The neutral stuff: All of the tables were occupied busy at 11:45 but there was no line at the counter. The Questionable: There is an $0.50 upcharge for ice. ICE. The same water that makes up 99% of your $6.00+ beverage. That's true. Fact-check it: In a standard 12-ounce cup of brewed coffee, the actual coffee content--measured as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)--is typically between 1.15% and 1.35%, with water making up the remaining ~98.65% to 98.85%. As I wasn't notified beforehand saying, the ice--the solid version of the water that is most of your beverage--and the volume displaced by the ice does not add to the water which fills in. In fact, ice is less dense than the liquid form, so one might argue that there is in fact less water than if cold tea, no ice, were requested. But I digress. I acknowledge the hour but the place was pleasantly abuzz--the staff was not in the weeds. Waiting ten minutes for an iced tea and a warmed croissant isn't a tragedy, but when the pastry arrives cold, it's just annoying. Especially when you've tipped $2 on $11 for counter service. Now, the seating: the two-tops are too small to ask to share without being awkward. After sitting at a bar-height table on a backless stool for an hour, and having the first table that opened up sniped by a man much younger and faster than I, was a real bummer. They have 2 types of service options, if you decided to enjoy wine in their establishment. They had about 1 to 2 options for 4 wine type of choices located on a card. We went with the flight. I had questions because I am a Cab and Malbec girl and in their Reds area, nothing adds even close to it. When the male employee spoke to me, he had a bit of sarcasm coming off. I didn't understand why because my questions were valid. He was short with his answers as if he did not want to talk to me. After this, he poured our drinks. I questioned the amount because it was very very very little bit. When I spoke with that same guy, he stated "What you expect..a whole glass of wine at $20 for 3?" I told him that I expected a little more love half a glass. He was like "It says on the card that it is 2.5 oz". I looked at the card because I knew that was nowhere on there. So I informed him that the size was not in the card and that is something that they should put because what we received was not worth $20 and that we could have purchased a bottle. That's how they get people. That flight is a total rip off!! Also, he put the drinks all on front of us, but did not tell us which was which, who's was for who nor personally give it to us. There were no little signs to inform us of what we were drinking. We had to ask him because he had walked off. He came over and was confused as you which was which as well. We received no water and we weren't even asked. Both employees were consumed with another person who was there (Business) and wine tasting and talking that we just weren't that relevant to ensure that our needs were fully met. Wine tasting: All 3 of the wines I had was disgusting. The one of the Reds that I had, stated it was bold. It was not. I had a Bubble (Orange) and it was horrible. Like all of them were cheap wines with no real packed flavor. The female employee or owner (I'm unsure) asked ONLY my friend what she thought of the wine. She never bothered to ask me which was really unprofessional. Neither of them ever introduced themselves or gave their names although we indicated that this was our 1st visit. Not very personable. This was a total waste of money and time for an experience. Wet had to go and find another place to get an enjoyable experience at.
