A fun little wine bar in Jack London Square. Stu, the winemaker was there talking to all of the customers and keeping everyone entertained. Service was great. Tasting fee is a little pricey but this is a small mom and pop winery not a giant corporation. The wines are priced around $45 for most of them, I really enjoyed the rose and the Temprenillo. Note: they have food for purchase but do not have a kitchen so it is pre packaged. If you're hungry you may want to eat first before going tasting. read more

Excellent wines, great service, and an easy to reach location all make Brooklyn West Winery a must-visit on your urban wine tour. I have been coming here for years, and am finally getting around to this well-deserved 5-star review. Located in the Jack London district of Oakland, Brooklyn West has a small tasting room with additional outdoor seating. They are dog-friendly. The owner, Stew and host Brit will go out of their way to describe their delicious Tempranillo, Barbera, Petit Sirah and other red, rose, and white wines. I'm not generally a white wine drinker. but they have a delicious Rose, and crisp white blend, and some recently introduced, and quite delicious sparkling wines (put a few aside for the holidays!). All of these wines are top quality and reasonably priced. Of course, when you join the wine club, you get an even better deal, and advanced notice and tastings of back-room specials that Stew pulls out occasionally. This whole part of Oakland with wineries and distilleries seem oh so new to me, and I grew up in the Bay Area! Brooklyn West Winery is one of many along this strip that offers tastings, club memberships, and a lovely ambiance to chill and sip back after a day out in nearby Chinatown. My friends and I all got together for a tasting ($20) which includes four different types of wines. They were nice enough to let the four of us split two tastings since we really just wanted a small amount to enjoy. This is the sign of maturing my friends. Out of the four in their Summer 2019 selection, the Tampranillo was definitely our favorite. We ended up buying a bottle and they offer a discount with the tasting. Our server was lovely and guided us through each of the different tasting notes for the wine and checked up on us even after the tasting was over. For a chill Saturday afternoon, it was nice to kick back and enjoy the atmosphere of this hip winery in a definitely developing area of the Bay. read more

Wandered here yesterday for a late afternoon tasting after having previous passed waiting for a table at Original Pattern. The winery is cute, with a few outdoor tables set up outside. We opted for the tasting ($20pp) so we could try a bunch of the wine and find our new favorites! The tasting came with 4 wines - a rose and 3 different reds, all of which were labeled, and we were given separate tasting glass as well. Honestly, everything exceeded all of my expectations. The rose was so delicious and light and crisp - I am not normally a rose fan, but struggled not to gulp this down and leave with a bottle. The pinot noir reserve was delightful as well - super light and so flavorful. The 2 other reds we tried, the tamparillo and the sunfire, were also very good. This was my only wine tasting experience where I felt like I could actually taste some of the tasting notes listed. The person who helped us was incredibly nice and very informative about the different wines we were tasting, and came to check in to see how we were doing frequently. If we had moved onto another wine he gave us an overview, and even gave us an extra sample to try at the end. My boyfriend and I both agreed we'd like to become members when we can plan on going more frequently, and will plan on taking friends to visit as well! I love this winery! I went twice in the past week. It feels like your local wine bar. It's well lit, bright and airy. You can choose a flight or get glasses of wine. I tried the flight and loved all of the wines. Many wineries I find that I only like one or 2 of their wines. Not so here. The staff was very friendly. They allowed us to bring in our food from a taco truck, as well as our 8 yr old daughter. I liked it so much that I went back 2 days later to become a member and to enjoy their wine and chocolate pairings. The port is to die for. My other favorites were the Sauvignon Blanc, the Tempranillo and the Cab Franc. Yum! Can't wait to go back. This is a gem. We're fortunate to have this here in Oakland. read more

This is a great tasting room that is dog friendly with excellent staff. We sampled the 5 wines on their tasting menu ($25 with the reserve, $20waived with one bottle purchase). The Sauvignon Blanc was incredibly clear, crisp, and bright. The rose was on the sweet side, a bit too much for my taste. The Tempranillo is one of their specialties, a medium bodied red with a peppery finish. Their Pinot and Zinfandel are also solid. The dessert wines are the winemaker's specialty. We asked for a a dessert wine tasting and they had some bottles open. The Aria and Port were fantastic dessert wines, pretty balanced and not too sweet. Brooklyn West Winery is one of four major stops along Oakland's Wine Walk alongside Urban Legend, Dasche, and Rosenblum Cellars, all of which are all thriving in the Jack London Waterfront area of Oakland. Brooklyn West was founded by two partners, who for twenty years had a passion for creating their own Spanish wine, and dreamed of having their own winery in an urban setting. They succeeded on both fronts. The winery is actually named after the owners hometown of Brooklyn, New York and their relocation to the western half of the country, but also the fact that this area of Oakland that Brooklyn West resides in, was once called Brooklyn. A funny play on words in two different senses. I came on a warm Saturday afternoon and luckily nearby parking was easy to find. We entered the wine tasting room which resides on the ground floor in what is becoming one of Oakland's numerous condominium complexes. We were greeted by associate Lo and we decided to go with their Premier Tasting which was a sample of four of their wines for twenty dollars. Lo suggested we start with one of their four white wines and then, since we were still angling for a majority of our sips to be reds, go with all three of the remaining reds on their tasting menu. We decided to let Lo lead us the way and start with the Rose which was had a drier flavor than I was used to but I appreciated the fair amount of richness it left in my mouth. The most important thing I noticed while taking my first sip was the beautiful hand blown wine glasses from Germany that their wine was being served in. It had a unique knob where the stem meets the base of the wine glass and when I asked Lo what it was all about, she told us it was there to give the wine vortex and allows the wine to swirl more easily. The things you learn while wine tasting! And they are the only place in the Bay Area where they sell this particular glass at a reasonable fifteen dollars per glass. Our second glass in our tasting was the Nuevo Tempranillo from Amador County which was stored for three months in their oak barrels and it's Brooklyn West's take on French Beaujolais. I loved the bright fruit flavors of each sip. Our third tasting was the Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara county and it was one hundred percent Pinot, which is never a bad thing. Our fourth tasting was their award-winning 2016 Tempranillo which was rich with flavor and had a certain punch well after each sip went down. That bottle had me reflecting on would pair well with that flavor, like a steak cooked medium rare or a nice pork chop. I love it when wines inspire you to cook your best meal and the wines at Brooklyn West Winery do just that. The atmosphere is hip and casual in the tasting room at Brooklyn West Winery and that's just the way they'll take it here along the Jack London Waterfront. Their grapes are harvested from a number of well known areas throughout the Golden State and most of their bottles are at a reasonable price point. But for twenty dollars for a tasting of four really nice wines, you can't beat that price and the accommodation they set forth at Brooklyn West Winery. Came here with a few girlfriends after a birthday brunch over at Jack London Square. I think we should have just gone to a bar instead since we really just wanted to have some more time to catch up together ... instead with every pour was an explanation of the history of the wine, the winemaker, the grapes, the terroir, the brand. To be fair, I was less in wine tasting mode but also felt like staff couldn't break script - friendly and knowledgeable, but couldn't read the audience. It wasn't as if the place was crowded and they wanted to move us thru quickly. The wine itself wasn't bad but I found it overpriced compared to the quality that I get from my wine clubs. read more

We stopped by on a Saturday evening one hour before close and were immediately greeted by their winemaker and ex-Cal History professor. He told us about their $20 tasting of 5 wines (waived with a bottle purchase) and wine club. He was wonderfully informative and we quite enjoyed him as a host. My husband and I shared a tasting and enjoyed most of their wines (with the Sauvignon blanc being our favorite). For $20 I would have to say the pours were really small. The good thing about a wine bar where you can bring your own snacks is that you can try more pairing combinations at your leisure. The bad thing is that if you're like us you end up wanting to buy more than one bottle of everything you've tried. We had happened upon a great deal on some Brillat-Savarin triple creme and prosciutto at a little deli on the way. Some meat, some cheese, some crackers and we were ready to enjoy whatever came our way that weekend afternoon. Had a reallllllly nice tasting here this weekend, and I'm not even much of a wino! The one stars here are really insane. The wines are full of aromatic scents and depth, but the service and the environment is anything but snooty. Inside its fresh and airy, a modern feel which I'm not always a fan of - but I love the seats at the tables - the other fat bottomed girls will know what i mean... I will say that I was all about lounging on the one couch thats available in the space, but was told it's not available for tastings. I think you should get rid of a couch if you dont want people enjoying your drinks on it. Our server was Low - who had an interesting name and a wonderful smile! I appreciate the dog friendly environment the most. There are a couple of areas to sit depending on your desire, a little sofa with chairs, or you can belly up to the bar or select a more standard table. The tasting choices scan about four whites and four reds with about four more premiums wines that cost extra. The staff seem to share the open bottles and I thought the pours themselves were scant. They appear to source their grapes from a variety of places in the southern part of the state and can speak well of the individual terroirs and the intent of sourcing from each. None of wines tickled my fancy enough to use the 50% off coupon that brought us in, but the wines are updated somewhere between 3 to 4 times per year, so maybe next time. read more

We were in town and decided to check out Brooklyn West, since it's on the Oakland Wine Trail. First off, I really liked the space here. It was more modern and felt like a pretty casual place to do a tasting or have a few glasses. We went to the tasting bar and were greeted by the winemaker. So, it was pretty cool to have the winemaker guide us through the tasting. He gave us some tips on getting all of the flavors from each sip so we were able to pick out other flavors. As we went through our tasting we could tell how passionate he is about the wines. This was great until the end when it was time to figure out which/how many bottles we were taking to go. Normally, we buy at least a bottle or two (depending on price points and what we like). When we only bought two bottles, he seemed visibly annoyed and almost upset. I understand that he fully believes in his wine (it was good, of course) but I can't blow my entire budget at one place. The tasting went fine until this point. We felt pretty uncomfortable because he stood right in front of us as we went through the tasting sheet to decide which bottle(s) to buy. It was like, dude, can you back up a bit and let us talk this out? That interaction left a bad taste in my mouth. We bought our two bottles and left. read more

And the staff, winemaker, and service have always been wonderful. Not only are the staff incredibly sweet to our dogs, we end up meeting so many nice dog lovers in the area giving our pups love. I was a fan of Brooklyn West Winery, but if you aren't prepared to geek out with the owners about wine and the process of wine making, this spot might not be for you. I personally loved this tasting room and found owners Stew and Jeffrey to be super knowledgeable and friendly. Reading a little more about their backstory on their website really puts the puzzle pieces together. These two love them some wine, y'all! I did a tasting with my brother and sister-in-law and we were all very taken with the tempranillo and rockridge red. In the end, we bought three bottles which waved two of our tasting fees. Later that night, we drank two of the three bottles but I luckily held out on the third. The rockridge red survived the smuggling back to PA in my checked-bag and I am very much looking forward to uncorking it at one of Philly's fabulous BYOs. Definitely a must-visit on the Oakland Urban Wine Trail! read more

I visit Oakland frequently and this is a new favorite stop. The ambiance is industrial/modern, spacious, and unfussy. The wines are excellent -- without exception. Stew and Jeff (and the other folks) are superb hosts! It's interesting hearing about how they're mixing innovation with tradition. I've also joined the wine club and shared a few bottles with friends and family who went on to order from them directly. Jeff was especially helpful with this in making sure our delivery to Texas in May (100+ degrees) would arrive in perfect condition, which it did. My family and I planned to go to Napa for a wine tour. Unfortunately there was a big fire in Napa the weekend before. My sister and I searched up some wineries near by and surprisingly a lot of them closed around 4pm on a Saturday. (We were searching around 1pm). Really great place to try some fine wines. The conversations with the staff made this place extra welcoming. One of the owners is tremendously technical and you get a nice sense of an artist crafting some terrific wines. The other employees are great to chat with too. Like most wine bars now, the tasting fees are higher than days past ($20/tasting) and it takes two bottles of purchases to waive them (or three bottles for two tastings). This is fair and what we ended up doing since they had some great options later in the flight. I can't really rate the wines in general since we all have our own preferences. For me, the rose was too soft as I like the heavier wines. However, the port and the 2011 Zinfandel are outstanding! (I picked up a bottle of the Zin.) Location - Strategically located and within walking proximity of popular restaurants (like Chop Bar, etc.) and Jack London Square. Interior - Still under construction but enough tables and chairs to have an intimate wine tasting. Wine tasting - $12 per person, which is waved if you become a wine club member. 2012 Chardonnay - Crisp, buttery, and light. This is the only Chardonnay I would ever buy. 2012 Rockridge - My favorite out of the entire tasting. My boyfriend does not like wine, and we asked for multiple bottles of this flavor. It was an excellent red blend that would enrich any dinner with rice and/or meat. 2012 Zinfandel - Good, delicious, peppery, and full-bodied. 2012 Aria Late Harvest - Delicious dessert butterscotch wine that wasn't overly sweet and is enjoyable by itself. It's a smaller bottle but any bigger would make the flavors overwhelming. Service - Jeffrey and Stewart were excellent hosts and made us feel right at home. This wine tasting experience was more than just some sips and suggestive nods. It was an appreciative and educational discussion. This place is brand spankin' new and you can still smell the drywall - little did I know that it added to the charm of the place and even though that new smell will go away, it made this visit seem really special. We did a tasting here for a little urban winery crawl in Oakland and had the pleasure of having Stew, the winemaker, serve us. Boy did we luck out! He is so knowledgable and thoughtful about how he talks about the wine he clearly loves to make. The wines here are really really delicious and complex in an addictive way. This is the first 1 star review that I have ever written, but Brooklyn West Winery has earned it. I visited with a group of three other friends on Friday evening after work. The place was almost empty which should have been a warning. But, it was kind of fun having the place to ourselves after a hectic work week, so we decided to stay, and ordered two bottles of wine to all split. We too unfortunately met the winemaker, Stew, and his equally uncouth wife, Michelle. They kept pestering me and my friends every chance they got for us to buy some kind of a wine subscription, saying how they have won all these SF Chronicle awards. We thought that we should at lest try the wine first, and it's a good thing that we did! The Tempranillo was just terrible, no flavor yet sour on the tongue with very high acidity. Made from grapes watered by the East River, perhaps? The Cabernet came out next after a lengthy wait, and I was rewarded with a "fresh" glass that already had greasy fingerprints all around the sides and a touch of pink lipstick on the rim! Gross! The tasting room associate hear me gasp in horror when I saw this and did come over quickly to switch out my glass. I however was done drinking after that, and even though my friend's glasses appeared clean, they didn't want any more wine either. To cap it all off, we were overcharged by mistake and had to almost argue with the person at the register to have the extra charge refunded. She finally agreed to the refund after my friend said that the charge would be disputed. We certainly won't visit this place ever again. Mansplainer Makes Mediocre Wine. Some other reviews have mentioned Stu the winemaker's uncomfortably odd demeanor and lack of personal space; we experienced that today tenfold. Since our favorite Oakland wineries were either closed for the holiday or not open yet, we tried Brooklyn West for the first time. Walking in the door after they'd been open for perhaps 30 minutes we were greeted by three people behind the counter with stupefied looks, gazing at us with some mixture of bewilderment and caution. I had to ask, "......are you open?" This brought them to life and they settled us in for a tasting. A very friendly lady introduced us to Stu the winemaker who lorded over our entire tasting. We'd ask the friendly lady a simple question and Stu would answer it, no not answer it, lecture about the science behind wine-making chemistry for 10 minutes. Several agonizing times. When it came time to finally sip the wines they both just STARED INTENTLY at us, glued to our every move, super awkward. Even with a counter between us the man was somehow still taking over our personal space bubble. Then Stu told us we were "tasting wrong" and mansplained how to sample wine. Um, hello. This isn't our first rodeo. But "agree to disagree" doesn't seem to be a concept he knows, as he seemed to get flustered when we weren't wowed by his vast and superior knowledge, and then proceeded to taste the way we preferred. The oddness continued until he finally left us alone with the friendly lady, who was much more pleasant but still glued to our every move and every sip. Just seems to be a strange culture there. Stu bragged heartily about his somm training certificates, but I guess that doesn't necessarily translate to the actual making of wine. They were very nice wines, not bad at all, some better than others, but nothing at all special. In a place like Oakland, or even anywhere in northern California, you just gotta do better.
