It's a well lit, wine store that also has cheese, crackers and other beverages to grab and go. Towards the back you can order a glass of wine or half glasses. We both tried different wines and enjoyed them. My friend had an organ wine, Esoterico. I had a red from Kid Sister. Our winetender/sommelier was helpful in answering our profile questions. I do wish we could taste a few before choosing a glass, but I do like that they have options for half glass pours. My favorite wine bar in the Bay Area, and one I miss so much ever since I left a couple months ago. I've been here countless times over my 8 years of living in the bay -- I've been here alone with my dog to work many times when I've craved a midday glass of wine, and with friends. It's a perfectly chill spot with the BEST wine selection, the kindest servers and just a really laidback vibe. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Decent wine selection. I went on one of their vendor days and I'd say the outside patio area is definitely too small for the amount of booths they packed in there. They had tacos from Xula (which isn't a business on Yelp yet, or at least I couldn't find them). I should leave the two stars for them actually. The wine bar seems cool though. They have a few stand up tables with limited stools, and a large self serve water, which is important. I felt welcome from the moment I stepped in the door. The staff member at the register immediately asked how he could help and gave my dog a treat before I finished asking, as I usually do, if it was okay to bring her in with me. We were there as a part of The Lede's anniversary neighborhood bar crawl (a fantastic idea, by the way) so I headed back to the bar for the Negroni Sbagliato. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable about what he was pouring, and chatted with me about Loire Valley wines when I spied their special bottle sale of the week on the counter. That and many others I saw were from interesting, not your run-of-the-mill regions, and of fair prices between $30 - $40. I can't wait to stop back in for a glass (or three...) on the sidewalk with tacos from Tacos Oscar next door or their bar snacks in-house. read more

Great little wine shop just down the street from where I live luckily. They have a wide selection of wines from different countries and we often enjoy the new things that we try there. We usually don't buy the same thing multiple times even though there are a few we've quite enjoyed just because there's so much else to try. Also, the under $15 section in the middle offers some great value - check it out. They also have a wine club that seems pretty reasonable and I think gives you 10% off on regular bottles that you buy. We haven't pulled the trigger yet but probably will one day. I love this quaint wine bar. It's close to MacArthur station in Temescal. Walk right in and try not to be stunned at all the wine bottle offerings! There's a wall full of them. And the people there are really nice! They were ready and super helpful explaining the process to us new customers. You can either pick up a bottle, have a glass, or do a tasting. I went for a nice light glass of rosé for $9. Generous pour for sure. Sorry, I forgot the name! But light and crisp and oh so good. I think the offerings change as well. They also sell some cheese and meats and offer boards and knives for you to set up yourself. More so it's for a quick snack and not a full blown meal. It's mostly all about the wine here really. And they do their wine very well. You can sit inside or out front in the nooks. I loved it, sipping wine with a nice breeze and quietly people watching. My friend took me to Oakland Yard before getting tacos and the space was warm and friendly with tables and an easy bar to stand by and chat with your friends. The wine is very affordable with glasses under $10 in many cases. I had a sparkling rose they was delicious, crisp, and recommended by the bartender. I don't know a ton about wine, and will likely never become a person who understands the trends or nuances. I do, however, love a good establishment that serves wine and tells me what I might like! I discovered Oakland Yard on a tip from a friend. I had previously been a part of a wine club at The Punchdown and was introduced to natural wines there. I moved away from downtown and wasn't very impressed with the service at Punchdown, so I canceled my membership and was on the hunt for a new bottle shop. Oakland Yard has been a great fit! The space is bright and open. I really love that they can pull up the garage doors and open up the back parking lot for bigger events (funny enough, I got some amazing designer sandals for a great deal at the last event I attended). The employees are super nice and hospitable. The wine selection is great; I love that I can be picky and try something interesting or stick with their $20 and under table. We do the wine club, and have been happy with our monthly selections. I love that the shop is dog friendly. It's so nice to roll in with our pup, grab a flight, and take our wine club selections home. Just thinking about our experiences puts a smile on my face. I honestly wish I had something more sophisticated to say about the wine, but again, I'm just a general fan. read more

Amazing selection...Small production classic wines and of hundred of minimum Intervention and natural wines. The owners from Chez Panisse etc and winemakers. Knowledgeable friendly staff too. backgrounds clearly show with well curated shop, heavily French Italian and some hipster California - but wines from all over the world. Impressive large collection of interesting wines under 15-20 bucks. They have flights and wines by the glass too! Glasses range from 8 to 11 bucks. We tried three (ok, four!) with our tacos (Tacos Oscar!!!) from next-door. All in all a wonderful experience in a welcoming and inclusive space. Will be back! read more

I have mixed feelings about this wine shop. There is a good selection of wines at all kinds of prices. Some very good wines under $30. On the flip side, I encountered a few staff members that are pretty lackadaisical when pouring and giving advice. I surely do not want someone to put on a fake smile, but some input of the wine beyond "it's dry" would be beneficial. There is one robust man there with rosy cheeks and a sunny disposition that is a chock-full of information, that is, if you catch him when no others are in the shop. He can really steer you in the right direction. I certainly will go back despite my few negative encounters because it's the best I've found thus far in Oakland. read more

I stumbled upon this little gem because I was looking for the Savignon Blanc from the McBride Sisters Winery and their website led me here. I was able to walk up and receive help, although they didn't have the Sav Blanc, they did have the Rosé by the McBride Sisters and it was recommended by an employee there. Her advice did not disappoint as it ended up being a great present for my boyfriends mom. I love that this is a local hole in the wall and they were so friendly. The same lady that helped me also gift wrapped the wine bottle for me, great customer service. I had fun beginning what will probably become a dangerous tradition of after work wine. My gf and I have been many times to buy bottles of red, but this was the first time I took advantage of the glass/flight pricing they offer on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I came at 5:30/17:30 and ordered a glass of Le Moss sparkling white. It's funky on the nose but otherwise very drinkable. I feel like it'd be good with fruit and cheese or salad--something light. Having visited many of the East Bay's curated wine shops, I was eager to find one that resonated both as having great wines offered at reasonable prices, but one that has a sense of place, and a sense of community, as well. This is The Place. I like many of the shops on Grand Ave., but nothing has come close to the wine shops/tasting rooms/lounging spots in Italy that I always hoped to find here in the States, but which Oakland Yard seems to mimic well. Their Thursday Night Flights are always interesting, whether featuring trendy orange wines, or lesser-known areas like the Jura. The staff is knowledgeable without being snooty, and seem to bring a joyousness to their work. Not only that, but they always have the most gorgeous floral arrangements by local designer, Flower and Forage. The fact that there is seating and an ample library makes it all the more special. In fact, I should just go now.... need to restock on my favorite bubbly at present, a lovely Spanish cava that tastes like Heaven. read more

Charming little neighborhood wine shop-bar close to MacArthur Bart. All the folks working there were friendly and welcoming. You can either purchase a glass or get a bottle from the shop and drink that. With just 5$ corkage fee that was our choice for the evening. The staff was happy to provide some recommendations. I was very satisfied with the wine that we finally chose (from the 3 that were recommended). Easy drinking, not too acidic but still with some fruity character. We were here about an hour and we saw various people come in and out and purchase wine, but it never got packed. We opted for their Rose flight/tasting. It was a great deal at $12 for 3 tastings and the pours are generous! The atmosphere is definitely something new to the neighborhood, but it's not snobby I swear. Everyone was friendly and helpful. There's not a lot of seating, but everything is spaced out nicely. There's also "patio" seating out front if you are interested in people watching and the place is dog friendly. read more

They're not all organic or low-intervention wines but they lean in that direction. Super uncomfortable experience and felt singled out requesting to buy wine and told that I needed a Proof of Vaccine. Reading through each review I did not find a single comment about it. Oddly, I wanted to buy the wine and take it to go. I was denied a purchase w/o a paper doc on 8/9/2022! I had on an N95 mask but my vaccine card was home since hardly any establishment request it in Oakland anymore. What gives? read more

The space is beautiful, clean, refreshing, and the wines reasonably priced and wonderfully curated. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and unpretentious. Ask questions and you'll be guided well. Want to browse on your own? They'll respect your space. They host events and pop-ups from budding chefs that enrich the neighborhood and are such a lovely community hub. I actually don't make it out to Temescal as much as I like. It's a fun neighborhood, with some great options, but generally once I'm home I try to stay within walking distance. That said, I'm always down for fun pop up events at new spots, and Oakland Yard was hosting a pop up flea market in their back alley. It was the most hipster thing I've been to this year. If you don't know, Oakland Yard is actually a wine shop. And a decent one at that, with a curated selection of wines, a solid sale section, and a tasting table in the back. In the back alley, they host events and this one had some white guys making tacos, some etsy vendors, a tea truck I sponsored on Kickstarter, and a man in a pink tee, cut off shorts, and a feather in his ball cap. Like I said, the most hipster thing I've been to this year. Did walk away with a nice Rose and a canned riesling. read more

The ABSOLUTE BEST wine bar in Oakland. I moved away from the Bay a few months ago, and I'm still missing this place. They do tastings on Thursdays and Sundays, and we were part of their monthly wine club. If you're a member, you get a free tasting on the first Sunday of the month when you pick up your bottles. There's an amazing selection for all palates and wallets. They also have a few snack options (cheeses, prosciutto, crackers) to purchase with your drinks as well as a few types of canned beer available. You can also bring in outside food, so grab some Homeroom To-Go right across the street if you get hungry and come back and eat there! They also host craft fairs in the back parking lot area every few months with food vendors, and they've been having more food trucks outside on the weekends. I wish they were open later during the weekdays, but that's just because it was the go-to spot for my friends and I to have after work drinks. This place and the people who own and work there are some of the nicest humans I've ever encountered. I wish this place nothing but the best, and I hope it becomes a long-standing staple of the Oakland wine scene. read more

I am so darn impressed! We went in once before Covid19 and loved the space, the wine, the staff... And now they have this WONDERFUL option while coronavirus has them closed: you can send in your wine tastes and price point and they'll curate a selection for you for curbside pickup. We got six BEAUTIFUL bottles today (including our favorite from when we were traveling in Portugal-- never thought we would find that in the States). We couldn't be happier about the wine, their precautions (gloves, dropping off at a table, etc), supporting a local business. Very highly recommend! read more

Great wine shop with a diverse list of wines. The ambiance is a mix between New York and Oakland. Loved it! We were waiting to get seated at the homeroom up the street and started walking around. And then we found this shop. We had a Cava tasting, which was a delicious bubbly wine. It would go perfectly with orange juice. They have wine tasting from 2-6 and by the glass wine all other times. The flower arrangements were beautiful. They were wild and free and very forage like. I highly recommend stopping here if you are in the area. read more

Well Oakland Yard is offering a service where you can submit an order request online (they don't have an online shop, but you can tell them your preferences, likes/dislikes, how much you want to spend, etc., and they'll curate a selection for you), pay over the phone and pick up using the safest, no interaction method I've yet to experience during this pandemic. I don't know about you, but I'm kinda scared of the typical wine shop. Lucky for me, Oakland yard is not your normal wine shop. They have an under $15 table where you can snag an impressive bottle for a dinner without breaking the bank. They're happy to answer any question, without making you feel like an idiot. They're uncanny at listening to taste requests and picking out a great bottle that matches it, and expands on it. And they make you feel welcome. Never again will I suffer some turtlenecked, round bespectacled snob that acts like my beginner question is solving a theoretical multivariable differential equation. Never again will I go to a shop that works the hard sell, pulling out the $60 bottles I clearly do not care about. A wine shop that's really all about the wine with the most pleasant, kind owners and a really cute dog! So yes, dogs do seem to be allowed indoors. It's walking distance from Mac Arthur Bart or you could drive and try to find parking in one of the side streets off 40th. They have limited seats outdoors and you are literally sitting on the sidewalk with people wishfully looking at your glass of wine lol! But lots of space indoors, just wish two people wouldn't hog four person seats with their stuff. So they have tastings on Thursday, and weekends. We went on a Friday but the owner was kind enough to give us a taste of the by-glass offerings before we committed to a glass. Like I said really great friendly owners. They know their wine so ask questions and they pour generously. They have some cheese and charcuterie to purchase if you want to nibble on stuff.
