Walking in, the place is very appealing. That's all that positive that I have. We sat at the bar. I wanted to like this place when my friend invited me out for wine. However, I do not. They have 2 types of service options, if you decided to enjoy wine in their establishment. You can either order a $20 wine flight (Which comes with 3 glasses) or buy a bottle and they will uncork for you to enjoy there. They had about 1 to 2 options for 4 wine type of choices located on a card. We went with the flight. I had questions because I am a Cab and Malbec girl and in their Reds area, nothing adds even close to it. When the male employee spoke to me, he had a bit of sarcasm coming off. I didn't understand why because my questions were valid. He was short with his answers as if he did not want to talk to me. After this, he poured our drinks. I questioned the amount because it was very very very little bit. When I spoke with that same guy, he stated "What you expect..a whole glass of wine at $20 for 3?" I told him that I expected a little more love half a glass. He was like "It says on the card that it is 2.5 oz". I looked at the card because I knew that was nowhere on there. So I informed him that the size was not in the card and that is something that they should put because what we received was not worth $20 and that we could have purchased a bottle. That's how they get people. That flight is a total rip off!! Also, he put the drinks all on front of us, but did not tell us which was which, who's was for who nor personally give it to us. There were no little signs to inform us of what we were drinking. We had to ask him because he had walked off. He came over and was confused as you which was which as well. We received no water and we weren't even asked. Both employees were consumed with another person who was there (Business) and wine tasting and talking that we just weren't that relevant to ensure that our needs were fully met. Wine tasting: All 3 of the wines I had was disgusting. The one of the Reds that I had, stated it was bold. It was not. I had a Bubble (Orange) and it was horrible. Like all of them were cheap wines with no real packed flavor. The female employee or owner (I'm unsure) asked ONLY my friend what she thought of the wine. She never bothered to ask me which was really unprofessional. Neither of them ever introduced themselves or gave their names although we indicated that this was our 1st visit. Not very personable. Such a cute wine bar next to MAMA that offers a bunch of different options. The service was great and took the time to explain the wines to us so that we could decide on the best fit. I tried the Thanksgiving flight ($26) and enjoyed all of them. This was my first time having a Beaujolais wine, which is similar to a Pinot noir, and it was probably my favorite one! Now that I've been to Bay Grape several dozen times, it's kind of a home away from home. They specialize in natural wines although I'll be the first to say that what I demand in wine is that it tastes good in my mouth. If you're going to tell me that natural wine is going to have even an trace impact on my health, you'd be wasting your breath as there are about a thousand other things I could change in my life that would be more beneficial. That said, Bay Grape always puts wine that tastes good in my mouth. Secondly, everyone who works here seems to be a solid human being dedicated to helping me get what I want out of the shop be it great wine in my mouth, wine education, good vibes or whatever. I've had so many great experiences here and met so many wonderful people that I can't count them all. It's a wine shop (although they have a killer craft beer selection too), a wine bar (although weirdly, no BTG list or flights...you buy a bottle and for a miniscule corkage fee you can drink it there), and wine education center (ask about their education events and series). Bay Grape is the kind of business that makes Oakland the special place it is. Their heart is solidly in the right place. You owe it to yourself to check it out. Came here for a blind wine tasting class that a friend treated me to. I know nothing about describing wines, so this was a great introductory! The class itself is $35 and you have to call in to sign up really quickly on the day-of starting at 5pm. You receive 6 samplings of wine - 3 whites and 3 reds. I don't remember the instructor's name, but it was the guy with glasses. He was great in not making you feel bad about your opinions because he was glad if you even had any. Any involvement of response made him feel better about your interest in the matter. To say the least, I learned a few things I was able to take away any think about for my next wine tasting. For instance, now I'll think about what climate the wine more closely relates to, or how acidic it is compared to the alcohol content, along with different words of describing the taste of the wines. I also enjoyed the cheese and meat spread that they recommended with a warm baguette. It was a good way to end the blind wine tasting for my friends and I, especially because I love meats and cheese on top of bread. So the service here is the best. The nicest people. So knowledgeable about wine. My cousin and I just wanted to go and sip and talk and our experience here made a really good memory for us. We had the wine flight and tried wines we would have never considered. We got some salami and cheese and crackers and did a little pairing. It was fun. Then we got a bottle to share from Lebanon. Our wine-tender told us about the uniqueness of Lebanese wines. It was good. Really good. There are lots of wines for sale and they have beer too. You know you're having a great time when you forget to take photos. So I'm just gonna have to go back. And I can't wait! A real neighborhood gem. Every single person I have ever interacted with here has been so warm, welcoming, and personable: from the person pouring a glass to the manager who somehow knows exactly which Cabernet Franc he just got in. Some of the bottles are outrageously good deals for imported, quality wine - and if you want to ball out, there are certainly higher end or rare picks. If you are not in the mood for wine, they have a great selection of beer in the fridges toward the back, usually heavy on the sours and funky. The space inside is nice for a date or even just sitting to read and write as I do sometimes, and the parklet is great for a group of friends on a sunny afternoon (no heaters, unfortunately). Bonus: they are super dog-friendly! My dog always lunges through the door because a) she's truly my child and loves the scent of wine and b) staff are generous with pets and attention. read more

We found a bottle of wine and enjoyed it on the communal table. I will save you the play-by-play of microaggressions by the male employee, but this guy just had the most awkward energy ever! It made us feel so uncomfortable like we were unwanted in the establishment and we were a huge pain just by being there. It was our first time there, and even a brief explanation of how things work would've been nice. It is definitely more of a wine shop that one can drink in than a wine bar. Stumbled upon this little gem on a Saturday evening as we were waiting for our table to get ready next door at Mama Oakland (we later found out that both Bay Grape and Mama are owned by the same folks!). Bay Grape, to me was a wine-cafe :) Laid back with a super chill vibe. They have a bar/ communal seating/ and a few tables. You can do flights of wines but you can also buy a bottle (to-go) or just pop it open there. They had a good selection of wines (ranging from cheap to special occasion). You can also get some cheese/ meats to pair up with the wine of your choice. The hostess/ server/ cashier who helped us was real sweet. ***300th Review*** I've been thinking about what amazing business should I save for my 300th review and Bay Grape steps in and sweeps the rest under the rug. Being that it's Valentine's Day and I love wine and have had this place bookmarked for a while thanks to Nique F's review, I asked my honey if we could stop by here to pick up a bottle for our trip tomorrow and here we are. Walking in, I was immediately amazed by the organic feel of this space. Tons of fresh flowers, natural wood and spilled sunlight from large bright windows give this wine shop a relaxed and happy vibe. BONUS: they are pet friendly (resident doggie Napoleon is adorable and goofy) and have bike parking in store! We were greeted by Josiah and Stevie, both wonderful, warm and you can feel the love they put into their business. Also, they look like they are having fun! I asked for recommendations for a chardonnay and Josiah pointed me towards a few and then poured my honey and I some riesling while we perused. That won me over right there! I felt like I was at a friend's house instead of at a business, even though it's my first visit! We decided to stay for a wine tasting (shared, since I can't drink too much red due to headache triggers). Most places will give you a glass and pour you the shared tasting, not here! Stevie cheerfully set out 2 glasses and poured our shared tasting into individual glasses and each glass contained as much if not more as your typical individual tasting elsewhere. Both her and Josiah happily explained the story behind each wine, all 3 from Santa Barbara (where they met and fell in love and why they are pouring wines from SB on Valentine's Day, awww). We had a ton of fun sitting at the bar, sharing our wine and playing card games. Thank you Stevie and Josiah for creating a space full of love, zero pretension, and tons of awesome! We had a lovely wine date here to close out our Valentine's Day outing and were so glad to end up here. We left happily with one of the wines Josiah recommended. I love this shop so much. I've lived in Oakland for 7 years and somehow only made my way over for the first time a few weeks ago. Super cute with a wonderful wine selection at a variety of different price points, knowledgeable and helpful people working there, and great options for indoor and limited outdoor seating. Located right on Grand Ave as you start to get near the lake, it's truly the perfect stop for a pre-dinner drink in the area, or a lovely HH in the sun. The first time I went was before my partner and I were going to Mama (which is apparently the same owners!). We just wanted a quick glass and were happy to hear they had a few options available. I believe for glasses there are maybe 1-3 options, but the people there were super helpful and we really ended up enjoying the fruity, bubbly red we tried. The second time I went my sister and I got a full bottle to split -- they let you open the bottle and take it home if you don't finish! We also grabbed some cheese and meats from the cooler in front, as well as some crackers and jam. They brought everything out with some plastic silverware on a little board so we could enjoy a nice cheese plate. We sat in the loungy beach chairs out front and had a blast. The person who helped me originally checked in several times and was super nice. Not sure what more you can want than great wine, awesome assistance, and cheese. 3.5 stars Very cute wine shop! Came for a weekend afternoon conversation and it was a lovely atmosphere-definitely the kind of place you can take your time and not have to rush out. Quiet and warm-great light and air. We ordered a bottle of red wine recommended by the staff present that day. You purchase a bottle and they serve you at one of the communal tables or at the bar. When we went, they weren't doing tastings which was a bummer (we were offered a glass of cava to try but that's it). Really wish they did tastings or at least had a few bottles of red and white a day that you could purchase by the glass. It's hard choosing just one bottle for a group with varying tastes. We wanted something to nosh on as we sat and you also purchase the components of your cheese plate separately and they bring you a board and baguette. There's sadly no presentation to speak of (the items area are just placed in their packaging on a cutting board). Bay Grape is a great neighborhood wine shop. Pre-COVID it felt like more of a "third place" (ie home-work-Bay Grape) for us. We miss being able to go inside on a random evening, enjoy a bottle of wine along with some cheese & bread, play cards or a board game with friends. COVID time sucks. That being said, Bay Grape has really stepped up to continue to provide an excellent wine selection with safe and great service during this weird time. Check out the website, order, and pick up. Or stop by, explain what you are looking for, and the knowledgable staff will bring out several options for you. Or check out one of the Sunday dinners. Better yet, sign up for the wine club and get to know some wines you might not otherwise try. We have never been disappointed. I read a review from someone who thought it was too "Portlandia" which is unfortunate because that's been the exact opposite of our experiences at Bay Grape. Not your average wine bar. Actually this place is like no other. It's rich with community and welcoming. You'll taste wines wines you never intended and love them. We got a really great white wine which I've of course I had forgotten the name of (looked it up on receipt: Hatzidakis Santorini 2015) to complement our sushi that night with Molly's help. I'm sure this place is aight, BUT... Came here about a year ago and purchased these golden tickets that would admit 2 people into one of the classes/tastings that the shop offers. Figured it would be a nice Christmas gift for my Dad, a wino who grew up in Oakland without all of the vino options that are now available in the town. Cut to about 1 year later: we haven't used the tickets and the expiration date is approaching. I call, speak to a nice guy named Josiah (thanks for being friendly, dude), who then transfers me to a woman named Sarah (maybe?) to discuss any option that I might have to extend the coupon, get store credit back, etc. She tells me the only class available is tonight, and that if I can't make it, the value is forfeited. Bummer, cause there's no way my Dad could make it on such short notice. I call back, thinking maybe I can go alone, and at least use the value of one of the tickets. A rude sales associate (whose name I wish I could remember, so I could drag her ass properly) answers the phone sounding inconvenienced AF when I briefly explain the issue. She begrudgingly says they can make room in the class for me, I'm like cool, and then I ask how it works, since my Dad--who lives an hour drive away--has the tickets. I figure he can take a picture and I can show them. Nope! Apparently "the whole point" of the ticket is handing it to them in person. Tha fuck?! Like, sure, okay, I guess that's a thing, but y'all really can't make any type of exception when I've paid you damn near (if not exactly) $60 for this shit? Y'all already did the least when I tried to find any type of solution that would allow my Dad and I to go together, and now you're continuing to enforce some bullshit, arbitrary company policies, for the sake of I-have-no-god-damn-clue-what! Even when explaining the expiration policy, Sarah--or whoever the fuck--likened it to any gift certificate policy, but I don't think so, honey! Most gift certificates do not expire within a year, and even with Groupon type shit like this, at least you get your cash value back if you fail to use it within the given time frame. I feel straight up robbed by these people. Granted, I should've known when they mentioned the 1 year policy to begin with, so I will take ownership over my mistake in purchasing it in the first place. Shit, they probably only created these bougie ass tickets in an attempt to bypass any gift card and gift certificate statutes, which are definitely a thing that I now know of because of this experience. It can get a little busy on the weekends, but there always seems to be s pace at the long bronze bar anchoring the establishment. Pro-tip: go to the sunday blind tasting classes and learn from professional sommeliers how to sound like you know what you are talking about. What does Bay Grape intend to be? A neighborhood wine shop where you can pick up an interesting bottle for dinner, or stay and sip it with friends (for an extra $5). I think Ordinaire intended to be the same, but they really just turned into a hella hipster wine bar, so I dig Bay Grape's legit casualness. They have bottles chilled and ready to go, they also have cheese, meats, and some snacks sold at RETAIL prices (an amazing deal) meant for noshing with your bottle if you stay. There's bike parking inside. There's funky music on the stereo. They offer "Sunday School" wine tasting sessions with guest winemakers. The owners will chat with you, and make you feel like a friend even if it's your first visit. You can sense a genuine lack of pretense, unlike most other wine shops 'round here. Lots to love! I wish I lived nearby, as Bay Grape would be the perfect extension of a living room. This is how a wine bar should be--welcoming, unpretentious, and of course have lots of wine that range from affordable to special occasion only. Thanks to Sierra, who had a UYE here, we finally got to visit Bay Grape! This place has been on my Bookmark list for a while. Should have tried it sooner! It's a great place to hang out with your significant other or a group of friends. Get a recommendation from the staff and you can take your bottle home or you can drink it right then and there for a $5 corkage fee. They also have blind tastings and classes led by sommeliers who can improve your knowledge of wine. Sierra had a couple of bottles of wine (one red and one white) on the table when we got there and both were very drinkable. We enjoyed sipping them while we did introductions and waited for people. Later as we were playing Cards for Humanity, people bought bottles of other reds and shared them with everyone. I decided to get a Rosé and the staff helped me choose one that wasn't too dry. We chose one from the Côtes de Toul, from the Lorraine wine region of France, and I really liked it. It was a really nice Rosé and all who tasted it in our group really enjoyed it as well. I'll have to go back and get a bottle of it. At $15 for the bottle, it's a great value. Next time, the hubby and I will have to pair our wine with a cheese or two and some charcuterie.
