Al always amazes! I bought a brown leather Santa belt (4" wide) online. It was just a teeny-tiny bit too wide for my buckle, by about 1/8". I tried a nearby shoe repair shop and they couldn't help; it was going to take a long time till they could get to it and fee, they admitted, would be higher than what they were comfortable charging. I called Al and he told me to bring it by and he'd fix it while I waited. Al is amazing! My grandfather recently passed away and I wanted him to be buried in the things he loved most, His cowboy boots and leather vest. Both were very badly damaged with the boots being very faded and creased, the soles were completely worn down and the buttons on the vest were hanging on by a thread. My wife is a minister and the strap on her dress pump snapped and she needed it right away and I took both shoes in so they could compare so the matching pair would align. The staff that greeted me at the door were extremely courteous and professional. I mentioned I Needed i ASAP and the replied "No problem sir". They took my number and advised me to watch my text they would inform me when the shoe was ready. Street parking is ample right out front. I got in my car and had to finish some important correspondence and I had planned to leave and grab a bite to eat. I was only there about 20 minutes when I got a txt telling me they were ready. Man not only did they fix the shoe that was broken they touched up both shoes with leather dye and polished them. They look BRAND NEW! Sent in a pair of vintage used Tony Lama Ostrich boots and they did a fantastic job! I asked for a resole but to reuse the heel blocks. They replaced the sole with a nice thick leather sole that was stained black to match the originals and the original heel blocks were reused with new Goodyear heel caps added. The boots were then polished and shined. When I got em back, they looked magnificent! Al even sent me progress pics along the way. All in, they do great work and definitely know cowboy boots! I've been using Al's Handmade Boots for more than 10 years. I collect vintage Lucchese boots (made prior to 1987) and Al is the ONLY person I trust to care for my boots. I go to Al for the simple things like a new heel cap or outsole, and the more complex repairs. For example, I have a pair of Lucchese boots that are made with Teju lizard. In fact, the lizard isn't only on the vamp (i.e., lower part of the boot), but also on the shaft. The skin on the shaft split open while I was putting them on one day. I thought repair was hopeless. I was wrong! Al was able to acquire a perfectly matching strip of Teju and created a seam cover to run up the back of the boot over the tear. And even though only one of my boots was damaged, he mimicked the repair on the other boot too. They look fantastic. I own almost 30 pair of Luccheses and Al is my go-to man. Not only is his work outstanding he is also pretty darn quick. Now, if I could just save enough money to get him to make me a custom pair. read more

Instead of returning them I thought I would give them a try, very nice ostrich leather but with big clunky. ugly one piece rubber sole and heel, UGLY! Several boot shops said they couldn't replace them with a leather sole and heel they were just throw away boots. Brought in a pair of Justin work boots where the sole had come loose. Al got my boots on Saturday and they were ready by Monday. Also, asked for a custom leather tally book case (oilfield stuff) which he made in a day! After about a week of using them the sole started to come loose at the stress points of the ball of the foot. Took them back and they reglued the area, as well as adding some stitches to ensure durability. Wasn't charged anything extra to make the boots right, I appreciated that as some places might try to overcharge over something like this. I have a "shoe guy", do you? I found Al because of his Yelp reviews and when I stopped in to drop of my shoes to be resoled I knew immediately I had found a great place. Al's shop oozes boots, shoes, and leather repair! I really wish I had taken "before" pictures to reflect the atrocious condition of the shoes, especially after two previous 1/2 sole and heal repairs and a build up of polish. That said, they were still really comfortable and I felt they had a little life left. Al confirmed it was worth it and what he returned to me two days later is nothing short of amazing; the pictures do not do justice to the "restoration" Al performed. I am amazed at the work they do! I brought in a pair of suede loafers that I had taken elsewhere to have the rubber sole re-glued. I really thought the previous place had ruined the sole instead of fixing them, so I asked Mr. Rivera to have them completely re-soled. After looking them over, Mr. Rivera said be could fix the existing sole, and explained the work he planned to do. When I picked up my shoes -- much faster than expected -- they looked like they were new from the box. In addition to fixing the sole, he had brushed and water-proofed the uppers.
