How this place is still in business is beyond everyone we know in the business. As a Master mechanic, If I didn't warn folks about this predatory shop I wouldn't be able to sleep at nite... shop around please...this place is notorious for ripping off customers..charging g three times the cost for parts or more and padding the bill in anyway they can. .. so many fake reviews and they still have only a 3 star rating. Don't be fooled by this place , I have had too many folks and other shops tell of the trickery and games this place will play to get more money out of the customer. They will smile at you while they overcharge you for anything they can. I truly can't recommend Al's Auto Repair highly enough. I live in Portland but I commute to Augusta for work. One morning, I arrived in Augusta and realized that my car was in need of emergency repairs. The staff at Al's went out of their way to squeeze me in so that I wouldn't be stuck in Augusta overnight. They charged me a fair price and took extra time to explain everything they were doing, even showing me photos. They also drove me to my office while they did the work on my car and picked me up at the end of the day when they were finished. And getting to meet Radar (the adorable Corgi/watchdog) was just the cherry on top of the whole experience. I'm so grateful for the excellent service! read more

Our 2005 Prius was dead. Told by Toyota dealership that the diagnostic scanner codes indicated that the Inverter/Converter was bad and would cost $6000 to fix. Brought the car to Al's. A thorough diagnostic by a thoroughly certified hybrid technician, revealed the fault was in the transaxle and would cost $3000 to fix. And it did! Thanks, Al's, for saving me $3000!!! read more

The front of my driveshaft fell off in Augusta, Maine last week. Luckily I just came off the highway and was pulling out of a side street when it dropped. AAA suggested I use Al's Certified Auto Repair which was AAA approved. After waiting two hours for the tow truck it was the only thing I was happy that AAA did. Mike, John and the mechanic were great. Very professional and honest guys. Fixed my car in one day so my wife and I could finish our vacation in Maine and get back home to Ct safely, at a reasonable cost. The inspection report was an added bonus, wish we had this auto repair shop in our area. If I lived near Augusta I would use them all the time. read more

Work is good, prices are high!! I asked for a quote on a new timing belt which would include a new water pump and all belts. I was told around $940. Called the dealer and made sure their price included all of the same parts and service, about $800. I called a place in South China, $700. So my business goes to South China, good reviews and 2 friends go there. AL ' s does not seem to do a repair all at once, the 3 times I have been there, all 3 my car was kept overnight. I had my car worked on twice by Al's and both times they kept it all day. From 7 in the morning till 4 at night. Not sure why it took them over 8 hours to fix my car that I booked an appointment for. Very slow service and very rude when calling to see how much longer it would be. Also, this place tried saying we needed over $200 worth of work done for wheel bearings to get an inspection sticker. Brought it to another garage and got a sticker no problem. Oh, and NEVER get an oil change there, they take FOREVER with it. Took them an hour to change my oil. Ridiculous. EDIT: Owner trying to discredit me. I had work done at the end of last year(2015). Not recently as he seems to think. My review is valid. This guy is trying to save face. read more

I'm surprised to read some of the negative reviews about Al's. I moved to the area a few years ago and asked people where I could find a mechanic I could trust. They told me to go to Al's, and I have not been disappointed. Al himself takes obvious pride in his shop and the work that his mechanics perform, and he is very conscientious about making sure that customers leave satisfied. I have found that if I have a particular issue or question about the service, all it takes is a phone call to Al to get it all figured out. When my wife's aging car started having serious problems, we took it to Al's to figure out what was wrong. The mechanics diagnosed all kinds of problems that would ultimately cost several thousand dollars to fix. I talked to Al about what to do. Many mechanics, eyeing a major repair job that would bring in lots of money, would recommend the repairs. Al didn't. He said point blank that we should get a new car and made suggestions about makes, models, and dealers to research. We followed his advice, got a newer used vehicle, and have been very happy with our decision. I appreciated Al's honesty and willingness to be honest even though it meant letting lucrative business go out the door. read more

I have dealt with many auto repair businesses over many years/cars, and Al's was the pleasantest surprise I can ever recall. I was stranded in Augusta with a nonfunctional vehicle and a large bag of perishable groceries, in 90-degree heat. After stowing my groceries in his refrigerator, Al figured out an ASAP game plan for fitting my car into the repair schedule AND getting me home. Then he and his wife DELIVERED my repaired car the next evening after they closed the shop, as I had no way to get back to Augusta to pick it up. His prices were in line with other garages, but the service/attention was unlike anything I have ever experienced. From now on, Al's is my go-to for auto repair. Prices are absurdly high in comparison to nearby competitors. I went to Al's to get an estimate on brake line repairs (because I happened to get a gift card), and received a quote for $1,000. After asking a friend I knew that couldn't possibly be accurate/fair, so I went to a place in Waterville that provided the same exact services for $460! I was both relieved and outraged that Al's was blatantly trying to overcharge me by a considerable amount. I would actively recommend others find another establishment for auto repairs. read more

Prices grossly inflated. Facility claims repairs covered by 2 year "nationwide warranty through confidence plus which are not actually covered. I called confidence plus and spoke with representative who indicated service which was stated to be covered by facility is not actually covered by the nationwide confidence plus warranty. Facility quoted 2 times the cost for part ordered from dealership located 4 mile away. I recently visited Al's Certified Auto Repair. My reason for going to this facility was for an oil change. It was indicated while I waited for my car that I needed to have a brake system flush performed for the price of $140.84 minus the 10% AAA discount. I acknowledge their was miscommunication in regards to authorizing the repair as I thought I would need to sign off on the repair before my vehicle was worked on and I only signed off for the oil change to be performed. I was presented with an estimate apparently "after" work had began which I later learned. I thought the estimate would proceed work commencing on my vehicle instead of following it since this was a separate issue from the oil change. It was further stated that the " brake system flush and service" indicated on the invoice was covered under the confidence plus nationwide warranty if you are 25 miles outside of the service area, this is of particular concern to me because I plan on moving outside the state of Maine. I contacted the Confidence Plus warranty administrator by the phone number listed on the brochure attached in this email and they made it very clear that this service was not included under the warranty. I brought this up to the service manager whose name was Todd Jackson. I indicated this to Mr. Jackson and asked where I could find documentation about the 2 year nationwide warranty he claimed was included, I presented him with the brochure he gave me and said that he would speak to the owner Al Sutherland. Upon returning from speaking with the shop owner Al Sutherland, he insisted that I would be able to call the number listed on the brochure from anywhere in the United States and that any service related issues regarding this brake system flush would be covered through Confidence Plus warranty. I contacted confidence plus again upon leaving this shop and spoke with the manager who indicated to me that confidence plus warranty would in no way cover service for any complication stemming from the brake system flush listed on this invoice. I am unaware how brake fluid can cost $57.11 but I also realize that a service facility weather it is AAA approved facility or not has the right to charge whatever they like for service or repairs weather they choose to charge $140.84 or $500. I inquired with Mr. Jackson how it was possible for the cost of a brake fluid flush to be $140.84 compared to they surrounding service shops which quoted me $74 including tax. Mr. Jackson acknowledged their prices are higher and stated this is "because we do quality work and offer a 3 three nationwide warranty the first 2 years which are covered through confidence plus. I can accept that their prices are higher as they have a right to charge whatever they want but I cannot the accept the reason which was offered for this which is that they have a three year warranty for the brake system flush and service, as I mentioned before I called confidence plus and Al's Certified Auto repair is fraudulently misrepresenting their warranty claim. Furthermore no where on the invoice from Al's does it mention anything about their warranty. If there truly is a warranty and they I need proof of this in writing and not just a verbal claim. As I stated before I understand this facility has a right to charge whatever they like but this is not an isolated incident, a few months ago I "wind shield wiper switch" part from Al's thankfully it was the wrong part so I did not have to pay for it. I later learned by visiting they local Chrysler dealer ship in Augusta Maine "Darling Chrysler" that Al's had ordered the part from them and Al's had marked up the price by $100. I have also included the brochure for the type of brake fluid used by Al's certified auto repair which was given to my while I was at the service facility, Mr. Jackson pointed out as indicated on the brochure that there is a $4,000 BG protection plan. Mr. Jackson stated he did not have the details of this agreement. On the brochure you can see that it states " ask your service advisor for details I'm assuming my service advisor is Al's Certified Auto Repair because this is where I had the work done. I went on the BG products website and was unable to find out any information regarding this so I would like to find out more information about this from the service advisor which in this case I believe would be Al's since it doesn't look like its covered through the confidence plus warranty which they claimed it was. read more

I looked up reviews of this place before I brought my vehicle here- it had many positive reviews- too good to be true. I dropped off my vehicle with a list of problems- I was very specific- it took them over 4 hours to "diagnose" the vehicle running diagnostics or whatever- it is an older pickup (1998) not one of the very hi tech ones today- I have travelled all over the country and mechanics I have gone to always diagnose the problem quickly - and this place charged me $240 to diagnose the problems- and charge an ridiculously high price to fix it- it did not sit well with me so I did not want any repairs done there..........and I was stuck with a bill of $240 that they charged to run diagnostics. Ridiculous. It should not have taken over 4 hours to diagnose the problem- unless they have speed limit IQ's. Needless to say, I will never go there again and would never recommend them to anyone read more
