I love Al's. I had been getting my haircut at a couple other shops in Boulder & had been disappointing results when stylists kept leaving and new ones just didn't seem up to the task. I decided to give Al's a try and have twice now had Kiyomi cut my hair. She listens and then makes suggestions based on her experience. She's also super personable as are the the scheduling staff. Cut and service were 5-star and at a fair and reasonable price for quality. The old adage, "you get what you pay for" holds, and I gladly am happy to pay their price. And men...don't be cheap, a dollar tip is an insult...like any service, a 20-25% tip is fair for such high quality service. Kudo's to Al for creating a great, local business. read more

This is a hip, yet classic shop my two boys and husband go to. The stylists are all friendly, professional and listen to their clients. I was so tired of bringing my boys to Supercuts, etc and being horrified at their haircuts. Spending a few dollars more is certainly worth it! We all especially adore Al, the owner. Great place for a cut that will last a long time. The staff is all-around competent & better then average, so I would definitely say that you can get your money's worth. Some might argue that its silly to spend over 20 dollars for a men's haircut.. I would tell them that cost cutters might give them an okay cut 3 out of 5 times and the other two they walk around looking like total tools for a month, so paying an extra 10 or so dollars to avoid that risk is worth it for me. read more

My 5 year old son has been getting his haircut at Floyds. The point of Floyds is walk-in service. However, the last two times, it seemed everyone had called to put their name on the list prior to getting there. So this is like a poor man's version of appointments. Either don't take appointments or just give in! Start taking appointments! I was tired of this charade so I made an appointment at Al's. We got in, son sat down, got a cut (by a friendly stylist), we paid, and left! Happy! I also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Floyds insists on playing music very loudly which can be difficult for a young child. I got a little time to relax and it was a win win for all! read more

It's very hard to get a decent haircut for men in Boulder. Al's is what you have been looking for. Floyds has gotten terrible over the last few years and I found myself bouncing around. For $33 you can get a great haircut with someone who really pays attention to your questions and what you want during their consultation part, you get two shampoos, neck shave and I added a beard trim which was great. The decor and space are really comfortable and relaxing. Yes I could pay as little as $18 somewhere else but it's worth it for this pampered treatment and better haircut. Steamed towels etc. and not too pushy about product. I will be going back. Lots of attention to detail and my requests. read more

Great experience at Al's Barber Shop. I was in Boulder for business and needed a haircut. Really interesting place, traditional in feel, but fun and funky. Entire spectrum of clients inside - young professionals, hipsters, students, mom with 2 young kids (~4 or ~5), and business people. I walked in just before closing but they were booked solid. Holly at the desk was super friendly and personable. Even with all the activity swirling about, she took the time to explain all the options and scheduled me for the following morning. Next day I was again greeted by Holly and she introduced me to Alex. Alex was also cheerful, professional, and engaging. She listened intently and asked a number of questions. Expectations understood, results set. The haircut was in a word, relaxing. It was very smooth and entertaining. The entire experience was spot-on and worth every penny (actually worth a bit more). I continue coming back to get my haircut from Al because of the great work that he does as well as charging a reasonable price, especially for the quality of service that the entire shop provides. Scheduling is easy and fairly flexible, and I have found all of my appointments to be on time and have never felt that my haircuts have been rushed. read more

Great barber shop! I stopped in here after having been tranq'ed by a Wildlife Ranger having mistaken me for a bear, at which point I decided a haircut was in order. Easy street parking, and they were able to get me in immediately as a walk-in. The shop itself is spacious, well lit, and feels comfortable. It's defiantly a manly barbershop, but is also clean, comfortable, and stylish. It's a nice compromise between a haughty salon and a barebones barber shop. I got a hair wash, great cut, and a beard trim. Great service, great results. I will definitely be going back! read more

I don't understand why this place has the rep that it does. Everyone there gives a good haircut but it is overpriced for what you get. That being said I haven't had a bad experience here in the few times I got my hair cut from them. read more

This is a crappy operation... I made an appointment for a haircut, drove quite a distance to get there only to be told that they could only "clean-up" the sides and back "because we only have 30 minutes until the next customer". If you're going to put such a time limit on your service, tell your customers that before you take an appointment. I went over to Floyds where I walked in, got an excellent haircut for about $10 less than Al's was going to charge. You people need to learn how to treat customers, this isn't it. Will never go back and have warned people to stay away already. read more

I have had Al cut my hair three times now and he was late every time. The last time I was I was 10 minutes early. Al took just started the guy before me when I walked in. He cut into my time slot by 15 minutes and at that point I just walked out. If tis shop takes appointments, why are they always running late? The first time I was there, my parking meter ran out because he was running so late and got a parking ticket. The $35 for the haircut and the $20 parking ticket are not worth the trip. I've had my hair cut (and beard trimmed) by Shannon at Al's since I first discovered it, 5 years ago. Shannon is a master of her craft and always up to date with new styles and techniques; I always know I'll come out with a good trim. The atmosphere is sufficiently masculine, but not so overflowing with man-porn (READ: Floyds) as to make me uncomfortable. I recommend it highly. read more

The haircut i just received from Al was so good that it prompted me to create a yelp account. I highly recommend scheduling an appointment with Al himself. He is an expert in his trade. He actually went into detail about how he travels around the country to speak in haircutting seminars, so the guy knows how to cut hair. He really goes all out. Never before have i had my hair shampooed and conditioned at a barbershop, which was a nice touch. He also uses a straight razor to shave your neck. Not only is he an awesome haircutter, but he's also a very personable individual. After just meeting him, i was able to sustain a conversation for the duration of the haircut, avoiding the awkward silences that often come with a new barber. If you are turned off by the $35 price tag, i urge you to cough up the extra $15. Its worth it. Plus first time visits are 20% off. try him... you will not be disappointed. read more
