I called to ask how much they charged to get my smog service and oil change and they were kind on the phone , giving me a price that was reasonable. As soon as I get there I over herd them speaking in Spanish which I speak fluently on how they were going to charge me more and chuckled . I brought it up then and there because as a business owner I would lose my clientele for speaking in such manner in front of costumers. They claimed that they recently bought "new machines" which is why they were charging me more. I then said I had called before hand to ask for pricing and availability, when I got there (5min after call) they said they could only service my smog check which they doubled charged me for. I have taken my car to Al's for at least the past 10 years for a variety of services and repairs. Recently the catalytic converter was stolen off of my Prius. Santana was able to order and get the part in within a week. Because of the high thievery of catalytic converters the part is very difficult to get. Santana replaced the catalytic converter within a couple of hours. He also, on his own, took pictures of the car. These were necessary to satisfy the insurance company. He's so accommodating and does not hesitate to stay beyond business hours to get the job done. This is the place that my vehicles will be coming to for service and maintenance. The prices he charges are very fair and reasonable...for example I needed a new A/C compressor in My Super Beetle and Al charged me less than $900, just the part alone they got from Sunnyvale Volkswagen was $460 and Sunnyvale Volkswagen would have charged me $1500 for the service. Stay Way from this place, very unprofessional, they did an alignment on my car and I had two sets of ties worn out in a little over 17,000 miles, when I asked them to check again they checked and said its fine, I had to go to Toyota after they wore out again and Toyota said the alignment was extremely off and that is obvious their machine is not calibrated, the owner agreed to refund the alignment only but after me to sign a waiver I have much more damage and he wouldn't listen or offer any resolution while it's obvious that they have a problem with customer service. I'll file a claim and we'll see how to resolve this. read more

Car needed a smog check at a Star Certified location so I stopped by Al's. Santana helped me and I was charged a fair affordable price. The registry failed at first and he offered to run the scan on my car again complimentary (ended up not passing yet again for some reason) and he gave me tips on what to do to pass the registry issue (drive more, run the scan at a lower gas level, etc) and finally it passed. He noticed an issue with my ventilation as well and called to explain everything in great detail and told me he was not trying to pressure me into anything but simply wanted to inform me and that if I had any questions he would be happy to assist. Was visiting in Los Altos for the Thanksgiving weekend, when had a a/c compressor failure on my 98 Chrysler Town & Country minivan. None of the preferred Yelp shops in the area were open on Friday or Saturday, but Al's 76 in Sunnyvale was. They were very busy, but took me in on Friday and promised to take a look and give me an estimate that day. Later that day, they gave me an estimate that I thought was a little high but not a ripoff. They said they could have it done by the end of the day Saturday, which was good because I had to go back over Donner Pass on Sunday. About a 1/2 hour after they gave me the estimate they called back and asked if I could leave it until Monday (probably because they were very busy). I said I couldn't, that I had to leave on Sunday. They said, "No problem, we'll get it done by the end of the day on Saturday. About 4:30 Saturday, I called and Jack told me he was leaving for the day, but the mechanic was going to stay until it was done - 6:30 or 7:00. He would call when it was done. Getting nervous, I got a ride to the station about 6:45. The mechanic was done, just washing his hands. True to their word, he stayed overtime to get it done. So far, the work seems professional, no problems. The only problem I had with Al's is that I had to initiate almost every call to check status - estimate, done, parts in, job status, etc. Normally, I wait for the shop to call but since I absolutely had to have it done, I couldn't afford to get surprised. My Dad has been taking our cars to Al's for over 5 years. We have had everything from oil changes to major car repairs done and Al's is the best! Since I know very little about cars, the mechanic always calls ahead of time to explain what they are going to do/ the problem. They usually have our cars fixed with in 24-48 hours. They are genuine and honest, which is rare in the Auto Mechanics industry these days! Last week the alternator in my car died and my car had to be toed. Around 6:20 my dad called Al's to let them know my car was on its way over there. Even though they close at 6 they waited until my car got there so I could do the paperwork and make sure my car was taken care of in the morning! Me and hubby were on our way to work during rush hour when the front right tire blew out. After putting the spare on he took us here as it was very close and we live nearby. We were greeted by Al and after explaining what happened they examined the tires and recommended we replace the front left tire as well because the sidewall was very worn. Hubby agreed and they had two new tires on the car within 30 minutes. The prices were about the same as any place else in the area so we had no complaints with the cost. I got an oil change and rear brakes replaced. Pros - Open early (7.30 AM) and closes late. The shop itself closes early but they have a cashier who you can transact with quite late (till 7.30 PM on Weekdays). - The work estimates are super reasonable - not cheaper nor more expensive than other places - Takes the time to explain the work they did - Quality of work is pretty good - followed a few special instructions for my car that none of the previous guys who worked on my car had taken care of. I read up about it after I came home and learnt that my previous oil change had used the incorrect oil for my car. Cons - They don't have a great parking spot. My father and stepmother were going to Al's for years and raved about their experiences, so I gave it a shot a few years back when I needed an engine replaced. Since then I have gone back several times (it's an old car) and I am incredibly impressed. Al's is usually very quick- at worst, they are timely. They are patient and thorough about explaining what's happening with the car, though you have to ask for the explanation since they won't always just offer it. When I was a student, I couldn't afford a costly repair once, and Al helped me out. Engine, radiator, etc- I have never had problems with any of the repairs. Most recently, my car couldn't pass smog and I was told that I would need computer repairs/replacement. I was prepared to spend hundreds, so I went back to Al's. Al knew to just unplug the aftermarket radio in the car (it interferes with signal communication or something) and problem solved. He even smogged the car and had it all ready to go before I arrived to pick it up. My mother was very loyal to her auto shop, but recently we started comparing prices. Decided to give a local business a try when I received a coupon in the mail. Called and made an appointment to have my oil changed. Asked if there was a place where I could wait for my car. The person said that they had a nice waiting area so I booked an appointment for noon today. I've taken my car here a few times for oil changes and not had problems. However, my mother just had a not-so-great experience at their shop. She took her car in for a test drive because it was making a strange noise on the highway. The guy said they would take it for a test drive and the charge would be a minimum of $25. When my mom picked the car up later, they said they did not hear/see any problem and they charged her $175. Santana repaired my 2001 Buick Regal. Had the ignition replaced including coded keys. Also repaired my steering supports and rear wheel bearings. I also needed a wheel alignment, which he did not do and he recommended a place I could get that done. He took the time to explain the issues. Never seem to get an appointment. And when i do, they cant get to seem to be able to find people to help. All i needed was to jump start a car and get is checked up (full service) and this is right behind their workshop. BEWARE!!! This is the worse repair shop I have ever been to!! I have been too nice and had given this place so many chances. I took my car numerous (four) times to this place for an oil leak and guess what!!??? It was never fixed!! None of them really showed me where the leak is coming from, why it's leaking etc etc. I was charged almost 2K for it and it's still leaking!! I brought this issue to their attention (including the owner) and was asked to take the car back to them so they can fix it....they held my car for almost a week (couple times) which means I have to rent a car while I get my car back!! (an extra expense!!) I got my car back and guess what it's still leaking!!!!! and when I talked to them they sounded mad!!!! Are you kidding me!!???? My car is in worse condition now than what is was when I first brought it in!!! It's leaking like crazy!!! I took my car many times for days and days but still, nothing happened!!!?? Why should I pay almost 2K for service that was never renedered!!!??? I also, took my car to other car shops and was told it's still leaking badly and the leak was never fixed to begin with!! I emailed Al (owner) twice but he never replied!! How unprofessional!! That shows me that they don't care and they are unprofessional!!
