She just wants to make your day a little easier and for you to leave happier than you came. Certainly this isn't hard when you're scooping Janes Ice cream and serving vegan homemade soft serve using Fruition chocolate and coconut milk. Even this is fairly common place in a world over run by NYC transplants expecting everything to be homemade and gluten free. Where Dianne is different, is her commitment to community. In 2005, Diane was the winner of the Microsoft/Bill Gates Start Something Amazing Award (a program honoring the unique and inspiring ways that people use Microsoft related technology to pursue their everyday passions) for her work bringing attention to food insecurity. Her passion for cooking and her desire to help others led her to find a nonprofit organization called The Queens Galley in Kingston. The work she did with the Kingston Farmers Market was instrumental in getting them to accept food stamps. Diane's mission to have people come together and break bread in dignity has now spread across the country. Her commitment even landed her a diner at the Whitehouse with President Obama. To add to her resume she graduated the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park while raising 3 kids and running the candy bar. But let's get to the point. You can tell Bobby pours love into his confectionery creations and is proud of what he does, handing out samples and answering any questions guests may have. There are various fudge flavors for sale that differ depending on the season. We were walked through the fudge making process and how he sources the highest quality ingredients for his product, something that you can't find in mass produced candy factories. After rounds of recipe testing he has fudge making down to a science, perfecting the amount of sweetness for each flavor. Unfortunately, that was not the experience we had. We were able to see the cows, but only Beauty was in a pen close to the opening. There was another cow nearby with no name or information posted. There was no one in the barn area to talk with us, answer questions, introduce us to the cows, or tell us anything about them. We went into the chocolate shop specifically to ask about the "Meet Our Girls" experience. The young woman working at the front was very nice and did her best to help, but she didn't know much about the cows. She was able to tell us that one of the cows provides the milk used for the caramels and that milk from a mixture of the cows is used to make the chocolate. That was disappointing because it was very different from the experience we believed was being promoted on the website and described in reviews. If you grew up in Connecticut around farms, simply seeing cows in a barn isn't really a "unique experience." What would have made Thorncrest unique was actually getting to meet the girls, learn their names and personalities, hear about the different cows and their milk, and have someone there who could answer questions. We did buy the chocolate, and it is DELICIOUS! I would absolutely recommend stopping for the chocolate. I just wish the "Meet Our Girls" experience had lived up to what was advertised. Based on our visit, I would go knowing that the unique experience is really the chocolate shop -- not necessarily meeting the girls.
