Admittedly I am weak. I allow dark chocolate to take advantage of me. No matter how hard I try I cannot safely walk past Krause's when I am in New Paltz. Absolutely the best dark chocolate on our planet. I am completely hooked on their dark chocolate covered cherries, dark chocolate covered marshmallow, dark chocolate covered mint. The chocolate shell is thicker than any competitor. The candy is always super fresh. They have so many different kinds of candy it is hard to choose - which is why I end up walking away with a box of mixed flavors. For those who my be less evolved on the evolutionary scale - who prefer milk chocolate- they have a bunch of flavors of that as well . These crafty chocolatiers make housemade cocoa goodies for the folks in town and beyond. Try not to get overwhelmed by the vast selection of truffles, chocolate dipped fruits and pretzels, and of course, the Star Wars-themed chocolate lollipops for the nerd in us all (my boyfriend was a huge fan of these!). If you think Krause's couldn't get any better, THINK AGAIN! Krause's chocolate has something for everyone! We stopped by here while waiting for brunch at a restaurant nearby. I really wish I lived closer, because I would come visit Krause all the time! Krause is a large chocolate shop with most confections available in both milk chocolate or dark chocolate form. Our favorites include - sea salt dark chocolate caramels, dark chocolate covered raisins (the raisins are huge!), dark chocolate covered oreos and the peanut butter ones (cups or meltaways). The price is on point - a 1/2 custom box will run you about $10. A great way to treat yourself or to get a gift for someone else. read more

Coming through New Paltz, our biggest mistake was going to Lagusta's before coming here. Don't get me wrong, Lagusta's puts out some excellent chocolates too, but they rotate their offerings and have maybe 10-12 options at any one time. Krause's completely dwarfs the competition when it comes to selection, but that's not even the reason alone to come in here... Our big draw to Krause's Chocolates is that everything they offer here they have in DARK CHOCOLATE too. Covered coconuts, caramels, raspberries, pretzels...you name it - all available in both milk and dark chocolate! From two dark-chocolate loving people, that is a total game changer for us! The texture of the cocoa was creamy and absolutely perfect (closer to what you'd get from milk chocolate). I'm not a big fan of brittle dark chocolates, and when you're making truffles and other confections out of very brittle dark chocolates, they're hard to bite into. For this reason, combined with the sheer selection they have here, I highly recommend Krause's! read more

I can't say enough about this chocolate store. I generally go to the Alps in Beacon or Commodore in Newburgh, but I would drive much further distances to go to here again. The chocolate is superior! I like both dark and milk chocolate and everything was on point. Also, the candy options are very fresh. Often times you get gummies that are hard. The gummies in the store are very fresh. They also had some cool gift baskets already prepared. Highly recommend this centralized location to New Paltz,, New York, and everything downtown. read more

Amazing chocolates! I like their wide selection. Great looking chocolates that would make perfect gifts. They have nice looking gift boxes ready for gifting. Nice Christmas and Hanukkah themed chocolates. Love the chocolate covered orange peels, which is my usual go-to. Definitely better tasting than generic factory-made Godiva or Lindt. You can tell they were made with love. Service was efficient and friendly. Definitely will come back on my next trip to New Paltz! read more

Let me begin by saying that Krause's chocolates have ruined me for every other chocolate. I can't do vending machine chocolates. Krause's chocolates make Lindt and Ghiradelli taste like Snickers and Milky Ways. Now, for you Westerners, you're probably asking, "how does it compare to See's Candies? For many years, See's held the top spot for me. But I recent came back from a trip out west where I bought myself some See's. It failed to live up to what I had remembered that I actually took a bite and threw the rest away. So, what makes Krause's so amazing? The chocolate is rich, smooth, creamy, and just plain "out of this world." My favorites are dark chocolate butter cream - which I love because every piece is unique. The chocolates are hand made and you can tell because the amount of cream inside and the chocolate that surrounds it is slightly different in each piece. I also love the sea salt dark chocolate truffles. Simply luxurious. The dark chocolate non pareils are fantastic- but be careful because you will never be satisfied with any other non pareil. The chocolate caramels are perfect. Not too chewy and not to mushy. Just perfect. If you're ever in the Hudson Valley, you need to come by and try some of this chocolate. But be forewarned: you will be ruined for all other chocolate! Oh, and one more thing- the staff at Krause's?? Kind, friendly, polite, and professional. Check it out!! read more

Why 4.5? Yes, this chocolate is better than hershey (maybe) but there is nothing special about it. Ok, there is alot of variety. I tried rum balls, chocolate w orange, and chocalate w marzipan. I would not buy any of it again. Too sweet. No subtlety at all. Dissapointing. read more

This Krause's is more like the store in Rhinebeck than the stores in Saugerties and Colonie in that it is a bit more bare-bones. But it's still Krause quality, and that is never a bad thing. There can be a bit of a wait for help if there's a lot of people in the store, because it's usually managed by 1 or 2 people, and the cash register is on the other side of the store from the truffle counter. read more

Disclaimer: I am a bit of a snob about chocolate and candy in general. I was raised on Irish chocolate, and so a Milky Way just doesn't do it for me. I won't eat just anything out of the vending machine. These chocolates were good. First of all: is it expensive? Well I really didn't think so. These are not Vosges or Godiva prices. Beyond that, I enjoyed everything I ate, which to me = value. You get to pick what you want out of the case on a chocolate by chocolate basis. So if you hate walnuts, you can avoid them. If you want a box of 20 with raspberry cream centers, you got em. Makes me happier than picking through a box of randoms. I bought a box of chocolates for my MIL, myself, and some "orange cordials" and some white chocolate break up for my mom. Everybody liked their chocolate, but the orange cordials especially were a big hit. Little chocolate balls with a tiny, crunchy orange flavored center. Like a Terry's orange but mini, and way better. They had STAR WARS chocolate shaped bars in here. A Darth Vader. Made of chocolate. One star off because the woman who rang us up was scowling. Really good chocolate! I love chocolate (esp dark) but as any chocolate lover knows not all are equal. The quality is excellent without paying Godiva style prices. Huge selection and so creative with there ideas. The truffles are not what I'm use too but they are good. Would be nice if the gave samples. Bought a box of truffles, a bag of dark chocolate with almonds and like 3/4 pieces - $18 & change, I didn't think that was to bad. read more

Variety, quality are the the keywords here. What I enjoyed most is that they had prepackaged and well priced all sort of dipped into chocolate things fruits along with chocolate so you can give them easily as presents. as well as keep them stashed at home for those movie nights at home. There are two foods of which I consider myself the world's foremost critic: Caramel and nougat. I am not sure if the people at Krause's have dabbled in nougat, but they have absolutely nailed caramel. They make a sea salt and caramel chocolate that actually gets me high. I guaranty that the individual who gave a bad review plowed down like fifteen chocolates and then went on yelp in a desperate effort to reclaim a few pieces of her shattered pride. The chocolates here are fantastic!! Not only are they delicious, but a great deal as well! A box of chocolates at Krause's costs about ONE-THIRD the price (by pound) of a box of Godiva chocolates -- but are of BETTER QUALITY. I've been buying my family Godiva chocolates for years and years. I recently took a trip to New Paltz and brought back a box of Krause's for them. They immediately told me they liked the Krause's better! To make sure I'm doing my math right, I just checked their prices. A one-pound (16 ounces) box of Krause's chocolates is $15.45. A 36-piece box of Godiva (at 14.6 ounces) is $50. So I wasn't kidding, Godiva costs more than three time more. Next time I'm in New Paltz, I'm going to bring back more boxes! Another reason my family liked the Krause's more is there are many more options for their chocolates. So I was able to put together a box of chocolates with all different types of nut fillings, which my family really enjoyed. And for each chocolate filling, you can get it in either dark or milk chocolate. Bottom line, if you're in New Paltz. Do yourself a favor and go to Krause's!! read more

Fairly new to the New Paltz town. It's a small little chocolate shop right off of main street. There is a really large variety of various types of chocolates there. White, milk, dark, etc. I've had the coconut candies which were delicious. Personally, it's a bit pricey for my taste. The quality of the products are excellent and carefully made that's for sure. The chocolate here is AMAZING! I stop in every so often to pick up a few pieces if I'm in town. The only complaint I have about this place is that it gets a little backed up when only one person is working there and they have to man the chocolate station and the cash register at the same time. 2 people should really always be working there.
