Husband and I are traveling on a motorcycle from Richmond Virginia to the Grand Canyon and back. We'd been on the bike for a while and stopped here cause it popped up on Google Maps. The restaurant is quite large and was quite empty, except for one table in the center. I noticed post cards for sale, on top of the jewlery case. Next to the lunch counter. Interesting. We sat down and the waiter, who was very young and bubbly, brought us water and took our order: Two Cheeseburger Deluxes. It took forever to get those burgers. We were enjoying each other's company so we didn't really mind, but the wait was noticeable. What was really annoying was the one other table in the restaurant... one guy just talked and talked and talked very LOUDLY about all his buddies in town. Incessantly talked for the entire time we were there. Not the restaurant's fault, but super distracting. When our burgers finally arrived, we ate them quickly. They were ok, nothing special. We just wanted to get out. The waiter, we suspect might have been the owner's son because he seemed quite young. He was really kind and personable. Very pleasant young man! I give this three stars because the food was adequate and the service was attentive. I don't think I'll go back though because the first thing I noticed when walking into this restaurant during the day when most restaurants are closed and this was the place that was open is the odor. It's not a pleasant cooking/food odor. Try not to trip over the carpet ripples since it's not really attached to the floor and full of stains. Also be wary in the bathroom because the linoleum is not attached to the floor either. This place needs a serious overhaul or to at least not stink if they want regular patronage. read more

We went to Walsenburg to eat at another restaurant but it was closed on Monday which is what brought us to Alpine Rose Cafe. It is your typical greasy spoon restaurant but the food is below par. The waitress was not friendly. The food was not good, over cooked, and old. The service was lacking (no refills) while the waitress sit at an empty table on the phone. Alright for what this cafe is and where it's at if you're looking for a good old fashioned breakfast you found your spot. Our waitress was a nice older woman who looked to be serving, answering phones and cooking all at once. We ordered the large group breakfast where you get two helpings of things like eggs, potatoes and pancakes and it was perfect. The only reason I am not giving the place 5 stars was for its availability of gluten and dairy free options, not that I was expecting anything with a hometown diner ran by one woman. The other thing I would tell anyone stopping is to expect to wait a little for your food, sometimes you need a nice break with broncos memorabilia to slow down the rush of the road. read more

The other with the heal of the loaf and broken chip crumbs. Server never came back to refill tea or water. We stopped here for lunch after we left Durango, CO, 3 hours previous. The place was simple diner in looks and fare. We opted for the Ground Beef & Green chili Enchiladas with rice and beans. Rice was ok, maybe a little old but ok! The enchiladas delicious, tasted homemade as did the beans ( I know they were made with lard) , Yum! Can't say that we'll ever return, so all I can say is if you're traveling east on Colorado highway 160 headed to I 25 north (Denver) or south (Albuquerque) stop in you won't be disappointed. read more

Stopped today Sat May 26. Two tables were seated so not very busy. I wish we would have read reviews before we decided to eat here. Ordered a patty melt and my wife ordered a BLT. Patty melt came out first with black burned Rye toast and soggy/greasy fries. BLT sandwich came out several minutes later, very small with the heal of the bread and potato chips. The chips were crumbs from the bottom of a bag apparently. Server was unfriendly and obviously didn't want to be bothered with actually making sure the food was satisfactory because she seemed put off anytime we tried to get her attention. All we ever got out of her was mumbling. I wouldn't eat here again if it was the last place on earth. read more

I like to try local restaurants when I'm traveling rather than franchises but sadly, I was hugely disappointed in the Alpine Rose. Firstly, there were only two tables to wait on including ours and the lady who served us seemed annoyed that we were there. I went to restroom and they were out of soap which I notified one of the servers of and he didn't really respond. I ordered a cheeseburger and French fries from the partially hand-written menu and my friend ordered the French dip and fries. After waiting awhile for waters our food came out with a small serving of limp, overly greasy fries. The burger was ok but not worth the $6 I paid. There was no ketchup on table and the waitress threw down some sticky ketchup packets. When we squirted the packets onto the plate the ketchup was spoiled and as brown as barbecue sauce. read more

Stopped for breakfast in Walsenburg, CO at the Alpine Rose Cafe. This is an old fashioned diner with a long counter, booths and tables. When I complimented our waitress on the coffee, she said she had been making it for 45 years. I had a blueberry muffin, which came warm with a side of butter. My husband had 2 eggs over easy and pancakes. Everything tasted great and our waitress refilled our coffee. Mostly locals inside and lots of Denver Broncos posters. They were very friendly when we walked in and it looked like this was a regular stop for them. I would give this a 3 1/2 star if I could. Restrooms were clean. As soon as we ordered, the coffee had something floating in it. The waitress was not enthusiastic until her shift was over, and the customers had to get the coffee themselves at some point because there was bad service. Other employees were kind there wasn't many people. The toast had hair in it, and the gravy tasted bad. We were just about to leave and go around the corner to a different shop when our food got here. I wouldn't recommend the biscuits and gravy, but the omelets, pancakes, and bacon is not too bad. The waitress also lied about the tea. When we asked for tea, she brought a few tea bags and said that was all that they had but there were clearly full tea boxes on the wall right across from the table. read more

This place is horrible. After about a half hour wait, my fries were cold and burnt, and the burger was dry.

So glad we stopped in here. It looks like any old cafe from the outside, and inside is a bit dated but totally cute and welcoming. The service was great and friendly. Family owned and super good food. We had juevos rancheros, pancakes, and the cheese omlete. They were all really good and very cheap. They have a basic menu and portions are big. The name on this restaurant is a little deceptive. It basically has a bar-feel with significant Denver Broncos decorating. The interior is functional. The food was fairly good with a traditional American / Southwestern / Mexican theme. At each table were restaurant copies of books by Ben Goode which was a nice touch. read more

We stopped here on our way to New Mexico. When we first walked in around 8am no one greeted us-it was empty and it was one older lady. Once we received our bad coffee we waited about 40 minutes for our food. The food was awful. Our table ordered omelette, hash brown, oatmeal, and egg and cheese muffin. It was overpriced for what we actually received. Do yourself a favor and go down to the nice coffee shop just around the corner. And they were dry and crusty. My sister ordered a steak and it was awful. Then they overcharged us. 1.75 for a can of soda.
