We had been driving hard for a good part of the day. We needed to fill up on gas before heading back to Valencia County and we didn't want to stop again, so we decided to eat before resuming our drive. My daughter was skeptical but I Yelped a review and decided to make this stop. As it turned out, friendly service and a decent meal for a fair price in today's inflated economy. Very good! I was craving an old style diner with swivel chairs at counter and landed here at Tony's. I ended up sitting out in the extended patio because it was a beautiful day and it looked more comfortable. It was. The staff here is all friendly and efficient. This is a little off the beaten path, a block. We stopped in on our way back to Denver. We got the Cheese Burger and fries. Fries were a little crispy but delicious. My parents live just north of Trinidad, and dad had recommended this place several times. Sadly, it took us a few years to finally make the stop to eat. Food was amazing, and the capicola is a must try, if you're having breakfast. The saltisa was also great, but the capicola is my personal favorite. Portions were large, prices were great, wait staff was in the ball. Tony even stopped by to check on us, which is when we learned he makes and cures the meats himself. Stopped in first thing on a Sunday morning for breakfast while passing through Trinidad. I was one of only two parties there that early. The owner told me to sit anywhere I'd like. Service was prompt and warm. The food was excellent. The place was very clean, as well. By the time I left the place was getting packed. There is plenty of parking. I will not return! The place was pretty run down. The very dirty and fly-filled bathroom (and I'm talking about those little disgusting flies that stick to you) was outside the restaurant like those older gas stations. Reentering the building from the back near broken and fallen glass shards from their window (covered with an unfolded flimsy recycled box) proved to be a dangerous hazard. I've eaten here before on my stop going to Denver, so I just attributed this to a fluke. The young waitress (from Kansas) was very friendly and took good care of us. I don't attribute my low rating to her. I left her 20% tip on the pre-subtotal. The food arrived nice and piping hot. It was presented well. I ate my French dip sandwich first before I worked on my fries, delicately savored with ketchup one by one. As I dug through the fries with my fork I saw the glistening of a single long hair embedded throughout the mix of yet to be eaten fried homemade fries. YUCK! It was disgusting. Can I just vomit now please? My contently filled stomach (mi panza llena) began to turn like a merry-go-round at a cheap carnival. My appetite was lost and I felt totally grossed out. ! I pointed this out to our waitress. She apologized and discounted my bill by $7.05. The French dip sandwich plate however cost $8.95. I did not ask for a discount of any kind because price does not matter to me. I'd rather pay $12.95 with a guarantee of quality and cleanliness. Tony's Diner needs a complete make over. Sausage,sausage,Sausage! Home made Italian sausage, Tony makes his own Sausage here! (In screaming Carnival barker tone) Was cruising town with no peculiar directions and saw just how many cars were out side and decided this must be the local diner spot. I was not surprised it was full when walking in. Ok, I'm outing myself here,it's been extremely hard for me to stay 100 percent vegetarian during this whole Covid debacle. I've back slid in many of my prior healthier habits, that being said I'm really not much of a meat eater, it's a rare thing for me, I actively seek out vegetarian and vegan items 95 percent of the time,my weakness for meat is entirely centered around grass fed steaks and Italian sausage. Today I saw Italian sausage offered as a meat choice in a breakfast burrito here, asked the smiling waitress if it was spicy? She offers me a bite to try, sure it's been a long while, I'm due, I'll indulge today. She tells me it is made by the owner of the restaurant and points him out as he converses with a table. Here's where 5 of the stars come in, she brings me a half of a large patty of the BEST TASTING Italian sausage in all the land, and that was on the first bite!! My thought with the second bite was "I sure hope the recipe is written down as it would be a major loss if this recipe died with the owner." I've eaten Italian sausage in many a place,(insert Johnny Cash's I've been everywhere man) how does itty bitty Trinidad have what I assume to be is the sausage they serve in heaven. On the third bite I asked the waitress if and how I could get some to take home, she sent over Tony the owner, he was very kind and gladly regaled me with other patrons "This is the best sausage!!" stories. I now go on a Italian sausage sandwich rant here, ready? I had the God Father sandwich and it was beyond good, I did prefer just the straight patty of sausage because the cheese and spaghetti sauce as well as hatch chili on the sandwich cloaked the delectable taste of just the naked patty. I had a side of spaghetti with home made sauce instead of the normal fries, it was yummy , the pasta I have a sneaking hunch was made in house as well. Fun fact: Tony said his wife and him used to frequent Patsy's in Pueblo, he often ate the Italian sausage sandwich there ,he enjoyed it so much he copied it. Now another restaurant in Pueblo is Passkeys and they have a homemade Italian sausage too, (they have a very similar sandwich) it has been a long standing number one, now it's been put out to pasture, who even knew it was lame to begin with? That is such a shame that I have say that, as my family have deep roots at the original passkeys. Ended up taking gone 10 pounds of sausage (links as well as patties) to share with only the best of friends and family, at $6.50 a pound for hand made in house sausage I think it's entirely reasonable. Now on to some other aspects of the visit. The service was beyond, 3 different servers all asking if we needed anything and refilling coffees and waters constantly, granted it is a smaller cafe. If you enjoy people watching then this is a cool place, you will be around some vestiges of the old west. Maybe the Italian sausage some how through my taste buds brought me back to my youth, I became entirely too nostalgic and melancholy sitting here in Tonys small town cafe with the locals, with earnestly friendly service ,with a sense of relaxedness among all present. Tony's is it's OWN place in time and space, they aren't trying to put on any airs, this is as home grown as you get, I don't think they are trying to impress anybody with anything BUT the food and service. There are issues, that being said put some blinders on if you must and just come try the Homemade Italian sausage, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I would like to add another star for Tony's Conversation and attentiveness. The 7th star will be added for the service. All I can say is wow! I can't believe this little gem is hidden away in the quaint little town of Trinidad, Colorado. Just off Main Street. This is definitely the place to stop for a delicious diner style meal. You'll think it's 1955 as you sit down and place your order. It's definitely worth the short detour from the interstate (exit 13B). I ordered the open faced hot turkey sandwich. It was everything I hoped it would be. A generous pile of sliced turkey with an even more generous portion of delicious gravy on top. The mashed potatoes were delightful as well. So I'll start off with they were very short handed but not busy. Our server was all over the place but I completely understand. It can be stressful but sometimes we create the chaos ourselves including the " Quality of the food". I had a simple eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. I could not eat the eggs and hash browns because all you could taste was oil and grim from the grill. The server never returned to the table for anything including drinks and condiments. She took our order and that was it. You had three lady's runny like crazy and one trying it to do it all herself. Just my opinion I would spilt the floor. Have two up front one on each side and one in the back by the grill line. I give two stars because of the service and food quality at the time of my visit. My boyfriend and I stopped at Tony's for lunch. When the waitress came out with my boyfriend's plate and told us they have a new cook and she had made the wrong thing for me so my plate would be out in a few minutes. My boyfriend had finished his lunch before I even got mine because it was at least 20 minutes later. When the waitress came out with my lunch she pretty much threw the plate on the table mumbled "Sorry" and walked away. She came back a few minutes later with the check. My boyfriend told her it wasn't really right to charge us for my meal because I waited so long (it was at least 45 minutes from order to table). She copped an attitude (normal for this waitress) so my friend said he wasn't paying for anything. Her comment was "sure thing" and she walked into the kitchen thing. Tony came out and told us he wasn't going to charge me for the MISTAKE. How very nice of him to not make me pay for something I didn't even order! He said we had to pay for what I was eating despite the wait because he has had people "wait 45 minutes to over an hour for their food". He told us he would cover the bill and told us "just don't come back". Why would you bring out plates at least 20 minutes apart for the same party? We have been loyal customers at Tony's for over two years and have overlooked the mediocre service and mediocre food because we would rather support a local business than a national company. We have placed takeout orders at Tony's while restaurants were closed for dine in because we knew he was probably losing business. I hope covering a check that was less than $25 is worth the hundreds of dollars we would have spent in in your restaurant in the future. We would have had no problem paying the bill if we wouldn't have had the waitress and Tony cop attitudes when we complained. YOUR EMPLOYEE SCREWED UP AND I WAITED OVER 20 MINUTES AFTER MY BOYFRIEND'S LUNCH WAS BROUGHT TO THE TABLE FOR MINE. We were supporting a local business despite mediocre food and now I ask myself why we continued to frequent Tony's. Go to Club 14 (Walters Beer Garden), Trinidad Smokehouse or Las Animas Grill.
