We went to dinner at the Alpine Outpost. It is a quaint lodge building featuring a bakery store ice cream and a restaurant. We had the most amazing meal, best prime rib I've ever had all of us had it cooked differently and it was perfect there was homemade tzatziki to have on the bread the salads were garnished with nastertium blossoms and homemade dressing. Veggies were beautiful small tender vegetables that were sauteed perfectly and wonderful baked good for dessert. The service was casual and attentive we ate a slow and relaxed meal the restaurant was full everyone was eating something different and at all look good we vowed to come back for breakfast or lunch sometime. Wow! What a gem. I am shocked but all the previous negative reviews because they don't match the experience we had today. The place is cozy and inviting. I didn't get any pics of the bakery case but oh my word. Fudge, pies, tarts, ice cream and so much more. We were there for breakfast and it was fantastic!! We love swinging by the Alpine Outpost to pick up baked goods after a day of skiing or biking. They sell awesome pies, cookies, and sourdough bread. If I could rate the baked goods alone, definitely 4-5 stars! The service has always been very slow but that hasn't been a deal breaker because we recognize that the Outpost is off the beaten path and there are generally only a few employees around. However, our last trip was very disappointing because not only did we have to go find someone to help us in the back of the store, she was also incredibly rude. We will still swing by the Outpost in the future, but we really hope the quality of service improves. read more

Wow. What a colossal waste of time. We decided to take a small day trip up to the Alpine Outpost for a snack or lunch or whatever they offered on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm. I had read some time back that new ownership was coming in to breathe life back into the place and offer their fresh new take. I had never been to the old location, but we had always saved the idea of heading up to Tollgate during a decent winter day as a lazy Sunday drive/excursion. My expectations were quite low (as they often are for local "mom 'n pop" spots around here), but the complete lack of any restaurant know-how was stunning and a disaster to watch. Our greet was prompt and cordial and for a brief second, I thought we were in good shape. As meager and minimal as the decor was, it was still sort of cozy, with some wold game furs, a wood-burning stove and a decent size tv with the Pro Bowl on. Two more couples came in right after us, with maybe four other tables in the place occupied. One 6-top table was eating, with the other tables all waiting. After almost 30 years in the industry, it didn't take long for me to assess how bad the situation was. I watched the older gentleman with the grey hair (who greeted us-maybe the owner?) slink behind the espresso counter with the younger barista away from the action and STAY there nursing his coffee. Amazingly enough, he seated my wife and I, and two other tables WITHOUT menus, and just stood there watching us wait for someone to greet us and drop some menus. My wife approximated 5-6 minutes had gone by while we patiently waited; that's when I started the timer. Grey-beard now was making himself an espresso, but strangely enough continued to assess the room without helping, all while chatting up the young barista who also found it acceptable to just stand behind the coffee counter and do nothing. My phone says we are 10 minutes in now. Grey-beard and young barista are now chatting away, oblivious to the fact that no one has greeted 3 new tables with menus and there hasn't been a noticeable server on the floor since we walked in. Finally, one of the couples that came in shortly after us gets up and demands some menus. This commotion draws the attention of a young male server away from view, who appears to come out from a kitchen and seems shocked. I too chime in and ask for a menu. Young dude is clearly flustered and shuffles a stack of menus and quickly passes them out to all the tables. 14 minutes since we walked through the door. At this point, a solo customer across from us is clearly agitated with her wait for food and is in a heated conversation with a new girl I haven't yet seen, but clearly an employee that seems to be the 'veteran server' of the bunch. This draws the attention of 'young barista' who finally comes out to the floor to involve herself in the dispute. There are plenty of apologies and 'veteran server' is trying to explain that the 'ticket just disappeared in the kitchen'. The woman waiting is clearly beside herself, upset and is getting her stuff together to leave. Grey-beard continues to sip his coffee leisurely behind the espresso bar, watching everything without a care in the world. "We're out" I tell my wife. "I've seen enough. This is going to be a mess". We slowly begin to pack up, watching the two other couples who came in after us search for anyone to give them some sort of sign that they will eventually be able to get service. As we left, Grey-beard seemed to flinch and seemed surprised. Almost as if he's not use to seeing people actually NOT accept this kind of nonsensical service standard. All while he casually stood aside and watched his 3 staff members struggle with 7 tables (only 2 had 4+ people at them and only 4 had given an order) This is the kind of crap that kills these small town, cozy "mom 'n pops". Lack of basic know-how. Lack of professionalism. Lack of decency. Lack of teamwork. It was certainly a waste of OUR time and I am actually embarassed that I thought it would be anything different then what it was. read more

So's it's a hot and sweaty day. Kind of like a dark and lonely night only different. My ankle n' yours truly are crossing the hill over to P-town the "back way" for the zillionth time. We didn't have anything to chew and hadn't stopped in this joint in years. It changes names and changes hands ever so often. Now yer behind the eight ball if yer cross'in the hill this direction and want a bite, it's the only game in town. So's here's the skinny. It's expensive, damn expensive. And when a joint has offerings and they're expensive, yas expects em ta be at least good, and positively not pathetic don't cha? The first thing to do would be to get a simple order "right". They can't. My doll asked for napkins, the bim serving up the grub said they're in with the order, they weren't. Grease soaked reheated frozen Frenchie Fries while pushing the ol' boiler over the hill require napkns or a very slippery steering wheel. The "homemade sandwich bread" fell apart before you could get it to yer mug. It ain't like mama used to make for damn sure. The turkey which was supposedly roasted turkey was that discount pressed and processed crapola you get from Wally World. You know, the stuff you don't even feed your mutts. Yah, that! Least it doesn't taste much, all the salt in it keeps it from having any flavor. Oh, Swiss cheese has never been and never will be provolone. My Italian relatives are turn'in over in their graves at the thought of that. So's if yer pass'in by this joint, and yer hungry, keep the hammer down, it's too much cabbage for pathetic food. Reasonably priced made from scratch food. Stop in for the fresh baked breads, pastries and pies...stay for dinner. It's great to see the store turn around and become a destination again, not just for cabin folk, but for locals around the area to head up from the heat of the desert and enjoy a mild mountain afternoon with a huckleberry milkshake or iced coffee. read more

Some friends and I read articles in the local newspaper over a year ago (2018) and saw a couple had reopened the Alpine Outpost and were determined to feed people good meals. One of my friends got up there last summer and said it was good. This July (2019) four of us ladies drove up expecting some decent food to celebrate the birthdays of two of us. It wasn't. My friend who had eaten there last year ordered biscuits and gravy. The choices were plain white gravy or gravy with some turkey in it. It came with no turkey and a very small biscuit. And it was cold. The rest of the meals we ordered were OK, but not good. Later I heard the couple who reopened it last year had sold it to someone else. Dang! Very disappointing. read more

Another fantastic experience at the Alpine Outpost. Took the family for dinner Friday Night. BBQ Ribs were seasoned and cooked just right! Food was "OK", the service was pretty bad. Our server never came back to the table after we ordered our food. There were two servers working out front that should have been able to handle a 7 top, which was almost finished when we got there, and a couple of other tables easily. I drank my glass of water and then never got a refill or chance to order anything else to drink. Scored some napkins from behind the bar after the cook brought our meals out. I had to find some ketchup and silverware myself, from another table. My burger was good (even though it wasn't the one I ordered). The fries that came with our meals were lukewarm and soggy like they were fired for someone else prior to our meal being cooked. I will not be back. read more

This is the first time eating here. My wife and I ordered a small bowl of split pea soup and the French dip sandwich made with prime rib and cheddar cheese/jalapeño bread. The soup had corned beef instead of ham which gave an unusual flavor. The sandwich had little actual meat and a bunch of fat and Geisel. I gave a 2 star because the staff was attentive and the bread was outstanding. I will have try this restaurant again in the future and perhaps ordering something else. read more

We tried a few times, we really did! We wanted it to work. I think this last time was it though. Every time we have ate there it has been a mixed up mess. They can't get our order right. This last time hubby ordered a chicken fried steak and I had a cup of soup. Hubby ordered a salad with his dinner and he got soup and no salad. We kind of joked that she did not get it right by not hearing him as when she leaned in to take his order she kind of crowded his personal space. I joked to him to put his arms up and say " this is my space" We did not get a ticket so went to the counter when we were done eating. Hubby paid and I was browsing at the pastries not paying too much attention. On the way home I asked him how much the bill was. He told me $39.00! I called there when I got home to ask about the bill. She told me we had 2 drinks(we did not)and a loaded potatoe which was $3.00 extra but then said "no, that is only with the prime rib" so how about I take off $5.00? I said that was still too much since you said the chicken fried steak was $22..00 and my soup was $5.00. She said ok, how about I take off $10.00? WOW! How about I pay what I owe? On my way home from a camping trip I saw their sign that said "coffee bar." I hit the brakes and stumbled in to be amazed at fresh hot high quality coffee and onlocation made fresh loaves of bread and other pastries. Next time in the area I will plan on a meal there. Was driving home from a long trip stopped off there to eat dinner. Waitress was rude, was using foul language and to top it off there was hair in our food. No one seemed to care about the customers in the restaurant. No one asked if we wanted refills or anything. Didn't get a ticket to take to the counter to pay our bill and had to tell the cashier what we had ordered. Will never go back there again read more
