Don't!!! 3 months wait $50 up front (non-refundable) prices fluctuate If you decide not to have them do the repairs, they won't say what parts need to be replaced So I brought my amplifier in around mid November 23, and they didn't get around to "looking" at it until march 24. When they finally contacted me about the cost of replacement parts, the cost (including their labor) came out to well above what some are selling working models for. When I asked specifically "what parts need to be replaced?" I was yelled at and told "I don't know. I've already opened it once, I'm not looking at it again". I was then told that I'd "already waisted $150 of his time" and stormed away... cursing me under his breath. I'm now (6 months later) still without my amp, $50 in the hole, and still don't know what parts I need to fix my equipment. I was given an old family piece: a record player console from the late 1950s. It wasn't working, so I started calling local places. Alpha Tech works on turntables, not consoles. They wouldn't let me bring the (small) console in. They had me detach the turntable from it. That took a few minutes, as I had to tear some wires away from the plastic pieces that were glued to the console, and I also had to figure out where the wires were plugged in--no easy fear for this av-clueless one. But I got it done. When I took the turntable in, I was told it would be a $50 deposit for diagnostics and that could go towards repair if it is indeed reparable. That's fair. I got a call a day or two later and was told it was reparable and I was given an estimate. The amount wasn't for the faint of heart, but if I were faint of heart I'd not have accepted the item from the relative. My main concern was that there could be something wrong with the console and I'd have sunk a few hundred dollars to repair a turntable and for naught. They used to send such business over to someone in Belleville, but he's retiring. Ed told me that they would help me if that happened. So I felt fine moving forward. A few days later, I got the call and the total due. I came and picked it up. Has a conversation with Kevin, who was able to explain how to use the turntable, like how to switch the needle over for the different speeds and that I could stack multiple records at a time. I had no idea! What a revolutionary thing for when I listen to my 78s!! Then I got home and had a problem: I couldn't find where to connect one of the two wires I'd had to unhook. And I looked hard. Took pics and sent to my familial tech support person. No go. It was the wire for the speakers. I could tell because the turntable worked but the sound was so very quiet. So I called Alpha Tech and for Ed. He seemed surprised/amused that I couldn't find where the wire went. Sounded regretful that I hadn't taken a picture. Tried to troubleshoot by suggesting I look near the tubes. Laughed at one point. That irritated me a little: you are the expert, you have me take the thing apart, you say you're going to be there if I need you, I give you nearly $300, and I've got an admittedly stupid-sounding problem... Throw me a bone here and don't laugh. Well, I was thrown a bone. I was told I could bring the thing in and he would look. I was glad of that. For the record, the place was not near the tubes. I had to flip the thing upside down, scratching the top, and then I saw that in the front of one metal box-thing, where I could not see when it was right side up, was the port for that wire. I'm relieved the console is fine. As I write this, I'm realizing it how upset I'd be now if it had not been fine. Waste money or more money owed. Yikes. I took a risk. Anyway, it works. Sounds good! I got what I came for. I would absolutely go to Alpha Tech again. My tip for improvement for Alpha Tech is allow people to bring in their consoles. If their consoles are end table-sized rather than buffet-sized, it won't take up much space. If the consoles are bigger, create a wait list. read more

I've collected vintage Marantz gear for years now. When I got them, Alpha Tech was my first stop. Expect a backlog. Good things come to those who wait. Understand, the guys are up there in years. There are hardly any young techs out there to replace them when they retire. They brought back a 2230 that was for all intents trash. It's now my prized piece. Over the course of a year I researched updating my Marantz 6100 turntable including sending a plinth to Serbia to have Ash veneer put on it, had a new dust cover made, new connections cables, a new cork mat and the shop sold me a lightly used Ortofon Blue cartridge. 7/20/2022 I brought an Onkyo TA-2700 tape deck in for service. I'm not an electronic DIY'r so I relied on AlphaTech to repair this unit. Belts, capstans, internal cleaning...I had no idea what was wrong. Deck powers up, display lights up but only tape movement that worked was 'rewind', no other tape movements functioned. Was told a 2-3month backlog, which I was ok with. Got a call 8/22/2022 stating, "Deck is done and ready for pick up", I told repair tech I would pick up on 8/26/2022. Courtesy call day of pick up to inform AlphaTech of my arrival time, and was informed then, "bad news, your deck is dead, microprocessor died its 'no longer available' your deck is junk". Repair ticket stated, "Cleaned out melted rubber and replaced belts". Plugged it in at their shop, deck powers up, display lights up, but no tape movement at all. How could deck be ready for pick up on 8/22/2022 and be landfill fodder on 8/26/2022? My first thought, AlphaTech blew up my deck! Got home, did an internet search for tech help and found a contact. Talked to him at length and agreed to a deck drop off for verification, inspection and determination of deck's condition. One week later, tech advised me my deck is done, ready for pick up. While at this tech's shop he put my deck thru various functions he uses to determine a tape decks performance and operating quality. "Your deck uses Nakamichi tape transports, which at the time your deck was built were some of the industry's best. Your decks electronics are complicated but I know them inside and out. Your deck shows very little wear on any components, it's in great condition. The previous repair tech didn't know what was wrong with your deck. He installed wrong sized belts, wrong routing of new belts and broke a switch in a location of deck he didn't need to be near. He told you microprocessor is dead as a cover for his lack of experience and knowledge with Onkyo decks hoping you'd buy his explanation. Your deck is one of the best Onkyo put out at that time. It's fixed and operates as new". Had I believed in AplhaTech's assessment, this deck would be in an electronic recycling pile. Why not tell me the truth, "We don't know what's wrong, we can't fix your deck". Instead, I was told a lie to cover their incompetence and charged a fee as well....1 star is too good! read more

AT has saved equipment for me three times. The first was a good twenty years ago with my decrepit EAR 509 monoblock tube amps. They were returned to me in perfect condition after Zaw studied the schematics and replaced multiple components. Now they are so old that one of the PCBs has cracked (RIP). More recently, I brought them a powered Dynaudio studio monitor with no highs. This just required cleaning of all the contacts. But in the process they tested the tweeter to make sure that it wasn't burned out. Success! These are nice people who seem to really like what they do. I would trust them with expensive audiophile equipment. In fact, they are probably the only people I would go to. The upfront diagnostic fee is reasonable and the turnaround is quick. I have no idea why this place does not have any (steller) reviews. I am new to the vintage audio scene and I was a little intimidated by the place. (Everyone I asked about hi fi audio equipment told me to go here and said they are the most knowledgeable. My age also accounted for some of the intimidation) I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly and helpful the staff was. I talked with the staff about servicing my Marantz receiver and also about upgrading cartridges. They took the time to explain everything and answered all of my questions without being condescending or patronizing. There was another customer in at the time and he also told me how great the staff is. (He was a 30+ year regular customer.) I cannot say enough good things about Alpha Tech. I won't be taking my audio equipment anywhere else for servicing while living in STL. read more

This is some genuine old-time service, folks. Come here if you want a quality receiver, speaker, turntable and want to buy a used one manufactured back when they were actually good (instead of the cheap plastic ones they sell these days). It's not a sales shop by any means, as compared to Best Buy, you cant just browse around yourself really. The main floor is where they do repairs and upstairs is where they have all the antique equipment. In fact, with the towers of old equipment stacked up everywhere (and I mean as soon as you walk in) I was a bit worried about the element of care in this place. That went away quickly when the owner Zaw showed us around. In fact, the stacks mean you have tens maybe hundreds of options rather than the 3-6 you'd find in a regular store. A bit out of our league, we told him what we were looking for. To him, it's a organized mess, he knows where to look and remembered what he had replaced on each model and the type of technology used in that model. I'm not that knowledgable about old time equipment but I'm sure some more knowledgeable people would be quite amazed at the stuff he had up there. Eventually, he set me up with a whole sound system for less than the original price he quoted that it would cost us. (You can spend anywhere from $200 to $1,000s of dollars). He hooked them all together and tested the sound. He also included every possible cable I would need and an antenna and an FM adapter AND packaged them all safely in boxes. He was trying to get a sticker off one of the units and I said don't worry about it I can do that at home, and he said no no I wouldn't sell anything without cleaning it up. All in all, extremely happy with this unexpected wonder of a shop. Another customer came in during this process and he was told it would be just a minute, although it was probably more like 15 minutes until he was done helping us. So don't expect to be treated like you're the only thing that matters; that just means he takes his time to do quality work and if it had been me having to wait, I would have understood. Plus, I noticed it was already past the 5pm closing time and he still stayed to help that other customer. read more

If you are looking for incompetent repairmen then this is the place for you. I dropped my home receiver off here to be serviced because my unit was turning off whenever I played music through it. The repairman called and told me he ran it for three days straight and the unit never turned off. After I picked up the unit and took it home and set it up the receiver turned off within five minutes time. I called and told the owner the problem and he told me to bring it back to the store. I told him I would not be bringing it back up there since his technician had already ran the unit for three days and could not get it to turn off. Obviously they are not testing the unit properly or they would have encountered the same problem I have at my house. Do not use Alpha Tech Electronics for any repairs. They also tried to sell me a used receiver and showed me their inventory which consisted of well over 50 other receivers. The sales clerk told me many people will not pick up their units if they are not fixed. I asked the owner this question and he vehemently told me that none of the units they have for sale are from past clients. I'm calling nans on this one. read more

I was having trouble mounting a cartridge on a headshell for my turntable and not only did Ed mount the cartridge, he mounted the spare one i had as well. Now i have two mounted cartridges that i can swap out, which is great. He also went through the trouble of walking me through the basics of balancing the tonearm to ensure i'm not damaging the needle or my records. The best. Big time honest. I bought a rebuilt receiver. Sounded great, then the power button started acting up within the warranty period. I took it in to get repaired. The owner Zao called me to tell me that he'll have to either give me a refund or replace it because it's heating up abnormally and will eventually go out. HE COULD HAVE SIMPLY FIXED THE POWER BUTTON, AND ALLOWED THE RECEIVER TO GO OUT EVENTUALLY, I would not have known the difference I'm sure. He allowed me to pick one out that was a little more expensive and it sounds great. they encouraged me to bring it back if anything seems wrong. Luckily, they are very good and very fair. Not everyone is aware of the used equipment that they sell upstairs. There are a lot of great bargains up there. I experienced the worse service and repair ever. Zaw Win has absolutely no customer contact skills as he does not seem to care. Rude and likes to yell. The Tech Alan who worked on it replaced a fuse, a couple of bulbs and basically cleaned the controls, Sounded ok for a few days then the same problems began happening again. These people at best can do simple repair on maybe a turntable, but for a complex vintage quad system like my Sansui QRX 9001 they have no clue what they are doing. I asked for a refund and was told to bring it back in. Absolutely no way! They have demonstrated their full incompetence!! The other Filipino tech Ed is just is similar to Zaw. Avoid doing business with this company. I was yelled at almost immediately upon entering the store. They lured me in by badmouthing a (former) competitor and claiming to know more about my issue than he. I offered to provide them with detailed information about my problem, so that they could let me know if they could help. They declined and told me to come in. When I did, they said that they could not help me. When I asked why they didn't take the information that I offered on the phone so as to avoid me wasting time, the proprietor raised his voice at me. I told him to stop and he did. They did not even say goodbye as I left. So rude! I like St. Louis because of the courtesy and sense of community here... Beware! I took a receiver in for repair. Was told there is a standard $50 deposit needed for diagnostic evaluation and that it would be put forward to total cost of repair. Received call a couple days later. Technician stated he found the manufacturer's manual on line and took receiver apart. He kept asking me to clarify what sort of problem I was having with unit. It was obvious he had not figured out (1) what was wrong and (2) how to fix it. He said he found one internal battery at 35 percent (note battery was not dead) but he replaced the battery with a new one and unit was still not working. He said he spent more than 35 minutes working on unit and he thinks (does not know for sure) that he can figure it out and eventually get it working. He estimated eventual cost to be less than 200. Later I saw on ticket he wrote that "possible problem with several capacitors". Either way it was obvious they were unable to clearly identify the problem with the unit. I told him that I did not want him to attempt to fix at this time. He asked me if I would like to donate unit to them to use for spare parts. (how ridiculous is that?). I received call about 1 week later by female from company reminding me to pick up my unit. I asked about a refund since they had failed to identify problem and offer a definitive solution. She started to read me what the tech had written on ticket. Indeed isn't it common sense that replacing a battery that is not dead is not likely to fix the problem? Then being non specific about how you might fix the problem gives the consumer no confidence in your abilities. I picked up the unit at which time the woman who I spoke with on the phone asked me if I wanted to look at their used units they had for sale upstairs? Sounds like a possible racket. Give false info to owner then get them to donate their item so that you can turn around and sell it? I don't know for sure I'm just thinking out loud. Enough to make me stay away forever! read more

I had a turntable motor die on me a few years back, and they fixed it for a reasonable cost. And when I needed to replace the 4 'legs' of my other turntable as it became increasingly imbalanced, they not only helped me solve that dilemma, they also reviewed how to properly calibrate my tonearm (something I didn't know how to do until now) which solved other sound problems for me as well. And they sell record cleaning fluid for $3, which comes in handy too. And let's face it, who else anywhere around knows exactly how to fix these vintage electronics and turntables? Three high fidelity stereo items were left for sale on consignment with a 25 % consignment fee / commission going to Alpha Tech for handling the sale. I moved during the sale process (informing Alpha Tech of my whereabouts and contact numbers, and I visited the business after 1.5 to 2 years and discovered 2 of 3 consignment items had sold many months earlier, and I had never been contacted about the sale, and proceeds were never forwarded to me. Zaw Win, the owner of the business, had no comment about the delay in paying me and advised there had been repairs necessary to complete the sale of the items and offered to pay me 26 % of the sale proceeds with Alpha tech keeping 74 % to cover the companies expenses in the sale. I did not accept that payment at the time wanting more information about Alpha Tech's costs in the sale process before finalizing the transaction. At this time, Zaw Win has not returned any of my communications attempting to finalize this business dealing, including 2 certified letters, and he is still holding all the monies from the sale of my consignment equipment. I am contacting the St. Louis Better Business Bureau to lodge a complaint and might have to proceed to court litigation (and the costs, there of) to obtain any part of the proceeds from the consignment sale of my equipment. I visited alpha tech with a DJ visiting from out of town. We were immediately met with open hostility from the staff. Seeing as my friend is very knowledgeable in this field I was embarrassed that the staff treated us so poorly. Like Jacob, they said they would not be able to help us. Inquiries about repairs of receivers and turntables were both met with a definitive no. I needed a new cartridge and the staff member said he was ordering some in. I requested he hold one for me and he accepted. I called to ask if it was in, he said yes, I gave him the time I would be there to pick it up and when I arrived he said he had sold it to someone else an hour earlier.
