Took my 5 yr old gaming computer to J&B because it was getting laggy and slow. J&B determined it was a jenkey hard drive (old "spinny" type, and almost full). They replaced it with a larger SSD and it's back performing the way it did when I bought it. However, I do what I can and try to solve any problems that come my way. But let's be clear...I ain't an IT guy. Just a normal human. If you're looking for an IT guy, then get your motherboard down to J & B Technologies. These guys will fix you up. I have used them over the years for installations, repairs, and just general questions. I have even had them on site to prove to my coworkers that I'm just an idiot with mere photo-cropping skills. Their turnaround time is good, and the price is fair. Although I have never purchased equipment from their store, I have noticed that what they have on display is souped-up and ready to get you moving. My laptop is 8 years old. Slow as molasses. Went in, was told I would be called later that day, and I got a call later that day with diagnosis and estimate. Gave the go (Friday) and was told the new SSD 1 terabyte drive would run 25 times faster than my old fashioned spinning hard drive. Fixed and called by Monday as promised and crap It is fast now!!!! All of the positive reviews must be from people who don't know enough about computers to realize they're getting scammed. The short story is that they lied to me multiple times. Straight up lied and said they fixed my software issue which upon arriving home, I saw that they had not. (My PC shuts down instead of going to sleep so I've had to disable sleep permanently.) They also made up a completely fake problem- they said one of my fans was backwards and they'd have to 'rebuild' my PC to fix it & charge me extra to do so. None of my fans are backwards and even if they were it takes two seconds to unscrew a fan and turn it around. Does not require a full rebuild. Needless to say I declined their generous offer to 'rebuild' my PC. Also, the main reason I brought it in besides the software issue was because my PC was making a mechanical buzzing noise and I was afraid that if it was the PSU it would damage my other parts. I specifically asked them and wrote in big red letters on my notes not to boot the PC up as it was and to test each part separately to avoid damaging other components. During a later phone call it became apparent to me that they had done just the opposite of my instructions- turned it on as is. But the guy said the noise it was making didn't sound like it was coming from the PSU. When I came in to pick it up a different guy told me they hadn't been able to replicate the noise at all. Then a third came in and said they had replicated it and it was from a loose clip on the fan. (I know for a fact it wasn't that, I have a glass side to my case and when the noise started I made sure to check if anything was off with the fans. No wires were touching, no CPU fan clips had come loose. I tried messing with the CPU clips after I had brought it back home just to see if he was right & I had simply gone crazy and no, there was no configuration in which a loose clip made a buzzing sound, or any sound at all.) Long story short, if you're going to grift people guys, try telling the same unified lie! Instead of three different versions. And maybe don't sell bullshit to the person who spent forever writing you detailed notes & info on parts to make your job easier? The person who obviously built her PC and isn't an idiot? Waste of time, waste of money, and unnecessary stress getting the thing there and back after I had just had surgery. read more

Unsatisfactory. I suspect that five to eight years ago this business was on point, but the current business is a dim reflection of a better time. I should have taken my PC elsewhere the moment they explained to me it would be three to five days before their single technician was available due to vacation. I received this news after they had charged my credit card for the inspection fee, so I stuck it out and told myself I was supporting a local business. Monday I received a voice mail explaining the tech needed further information. I quickly returned the call and was Immediately placed on hold, oops disconnected. I placed another call and played the "please hold...how can I help you game" for four or five minutes. Later, after classes had finished, I reached the tech, and he explained to me he could not find anything out of sorts with rig. I listened and offered further details explaining the problem resulting in a mysterious "crowbar" diagnosis ( had to google that one for an actual explanation). Today I picked up my PC. I returned home and put my computer back together...nothing. The exact same reason I sought assistance in the first place. I am back to square one and will be taking my PC to a chain store. Avoid old men in cigarette smoke filled offices and avoid this business. read more

Fantastic! Two-and-a-half years ago, my wife and I decided to build a home PC rather than buy a computer from a big-box retailer with all that junk pre-loaded onto it. J&B did a wonderful job helping us decide what would fit our computing needs, and built us a much faster/stronger/more reliable computer than what we would have been able to afford elsewhere. Just talked to John, the owner, and had a clear, excellent conversation setting up an appointment to have a technician come out to my apartment to try to fix my third computer with the same X*!*@*X problem I've been having for three years. I worked with John to get a few upgrades on my pc. He was helpful and I got what I wanted at a fair price.

Took my laptop because my screen was discoloring and flashing. they diagnosed it with a bad display that would require a total of $180 to repair and the diagnostic was included. I decided I wanted to take it home and use an external monitor for a while and buying new laptop instead. When I got it back they had broken the frame by the power button. I called around and found a place that had over 400 reviews in the 4-5 star range in St. Charles off of Zumbel. I called him and he told me based on the description of symptoms it couldn't be a bad display but maybe a cable had come loose. He also said that no one that knows anything about computer repair would crack the case opening it up. that even people tinkering at home know how to take screws out and open a case without breaking it. I took it in and they opened it right in front of me re-seated the cable and closed it back up. The issue went away. He didn't charge me anything because this place has taken me for close to $50. He even ran a diagnostic on the LCD display and the rest of the computer and there was nothing wrong with it. These guys are scammers. Save your device and take it somewhere else!! read more
