I am very unhappy with my service from Alpha Floor Sanding and have major concerns as it has been 3 weeks and there are still some real problems with my floors. Unfortunately, I am not getting any response to my calls. There are 2 major issues: 1) In the middle of the kitchen floor there is an obvious long string of hair that can be seen under the polyeurothene. 2) Additionally their machine broke the top stair of my stairs in the corner where no one walks. Anyone looking for their floors to be done I'd like to share a personal (long, sorry) story regarding Alpha flooring (617-323-0408; http://alphafloorsandinginc.com). I also have pictures if needed. I used them after reading several recommendations on various FB sites (Quirky Roslindale message board for instance), most remarking on their competitive price & good quality. Some reviews noted cleanup was to be desired but given that I expected dust and did not want to pay for dustless I didn't care. I used them locally in Roslindale and was satisfied. I had two rooms sanded and polyed with no stain, kept natural. Given my level of satisfaction I recommended them to my friend, who saw my floors in person also, when he was ready to have his floors done outside Roslindale and I now feel horrible about it! He asked to have two upstairs rooms and his staircase done, sanded, stained and polyed. He had the stain himself since his downstairs rooms had been done previously. He went with Alpha and work was supposed to be done this week. I personally helped him tape up the door to his living room, which had just been renovated and decorated. He left the stain to be used on the stairs and went to work expecting all to be well. He came home to find out that they did NOT use the stain he provided. Fortunately he also has a wonderful surveillance system and we can see the workers move the cans of stain and never use them. Why else would you think cans of stains would be there? He explicitly told the owner he had his own stain, what color it was, and the expectation that obviously the stairs and upstairs rooms would match the downstairs. First the owner tried arguing that the stairs would be always look lighter than the regular floors. Then he argued that the upstairs and stairs must be a different kind of wood. Neither is true. The stairs and upstairs both are several shades lighter and slightly red-looking than downstairs. My friend also took a piece of wood flooring from upstairs, sanded and stained with HIS stain to show that had if they used what he provided to stain the floors they would've been done satisfactorily. Our assumption is that they used a stain/poly combo, which was not agreed upon and clearly does not match in color. They agreed to come back to fix the problem which we expected would be done promptly, as a good business should. They were supposed to come two days later, today 4/12/18, but after further discoveries and conversations decided they were not going to be allowed to finish the job. Next he had discovered most of the corners and some other parts of the stairs were not stained at all. Then he also realized the plastic seal around his living room had been broken and reviewed the cameras to confirm the workers had ripped it down and entered the living room. We still have no idea why. They had no reason to enter that room, the job was only for the staircase and upstairs rooms. The downstairs had clearly already been refinished and the door was clearly taped off and secured. After doing that they replaced the plastic in a shoddy fashion not sealing it off, leaving a gap. This allowed dust to get under the door and into the room. His living room, which was just furnished and new very expensive fragile shades installed, is now covered in a fine layer of dust. He texted the owner this morning to confirm when he would be there so they could speak and he seemed confused and expressed how he had no plans to be at the house to remedy this, that he had other jobs and customers, but his workers would be coming. That's very poor practice. If a customer has a problem, has raised those concerns to you, that customer should be your priority. At least make a more reasonable effort. After some debate and his unwillingness to come down he was told to forget it altogether. He, not his workers, needed to address this. We are now looking for another flooring company to fix that and how best to clean the affected living room and furnishings. I feel awful about recommending this company. I don't know how you can do a decent job for one customer and absolutely fail at another's. I can only hope to give you all the facts to best inform your flooring decision. Amy Roslindale read more

We hired Alpha flooring recently to refinish the floors in a home we recently purchased in North Deering. They were very easy to work with, very professional and timely. We simply left the key out for them. The floors came out amazing, at a reasonable price. This project upgraded the total look of our home, as most of the flooring is wood; they are truly beautiful. They also did an excellent job blending a patch job into the rest of the flooring, even using some 'aged' wood to help it blend in with the older wood floor. I was so excited after reading the reviews for Alpha sanding that I hired them to sand a flight of stairs a bedroom and a hallway. All original floors to an 1890 house. I needed two small areas repaired. When Quinn came to take a look and leave an estimate he said the repairs could be done but they wouldn't match exactly, he stated it was old fir and he had some but it may not be exact. I was fine with that I wasn't expecting an exact match. His crew showed up and sure they did the repairs,didn't even bother to attempt to stain and blend the new wood at all (didn't even use the "old fir" Quinn mentioned he could try to match with) they used brand new red oak, I saw the remmants in my trash barrel. They also filled a couple of spaces with wood filler and that doesn't match at all....my floors are a honey color....the filler is an off white....they just didn't try at all. They were very sloppy with the polyurethane getting it on the baseboards and on the risers, very disappointing. Lastly you can see the burn marks on my steps where they should have changed the piece of sand paper but instead kept going with gummed up sand paper! I will not let them sand any other floors in my house and I do not recommend them at all. I'm very sorry I hired them. read more

If I could give Quinn and his team a 10 I would. We recently moved to the Dorchester area and the floors in our condo were badly water stained and had paint all over them. We really loved the idea of having wood floors vs carpet so we called Quinn at the recommendation of a family friend who had used him twice and he said he could start in two days. He called us in minutes and we had set up a consult. The job included not only refinishing the floors, but replacing a placeholder (plywood) that had been put in place when two rooms were joined. When we walked into the unit after they completed the work, our jaws literally dropped. They did such an amazing job and only took two days and far less money than we expected. The crew were on time and worked tirelessly and methodically with great care and work ethics to sand down our deck. They also cleaned up afterwards, leaving no traces of the dust. A person came to our place today to do the flooring. He was alone and was supposed to remove the bed and a few stuff from the room. He had NO IDEA what should he do first and had no help at all! He did not understand what I meant when I asked him if he can do things alone and by himself​​ or he needs to bring help?​ So he called his boss and his boss asked him to leave the job right away since apparently,​ I should have not expressed my concern​ at all before the job is done! These guys are great. Quinn (the owner, I think) always answers his phone when I call. They were available literally the next day to start the job. Prices were very reasonable. And best of all, the quality of work is great. They even lifted up our hearth in our family room to ensure smooth finish. And they took the drawer out of the bottom of the stove to get under the stove to ensure a nice full finish. Floor sanding and 2 coats of poly took 3 days. Just one note: They did leave the heat on and opened all the windows to help the poly dry and did not give us a heads up. We almost ran out of oil. So be prepared and make sure you ask what their plan is. :) But overall, these guys take pride in their work, and deliver great results at a great price. read more

CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION I recently had a bad experience with a flooring another flooring contractor they gouged up my first floor, caused a lot of ripples and valleys in the wood. So, I had them re-do the sanding and refinish the floor. Any how I chose to go with this contractor to complete my second floor because he had been recommended through a friend. The owner came in and quoted me 2.50 per square foot plus 300 for the stairs. Not a bad price I admit, for 2 rooms, a small hallway, and 13 stair treads. I told the owner that I had leftover stain from the first floor and that's what they'd be using because I wanted to match the upstairs to the downstairs. I said specifically dark walnut and that's exactly what he wrote on the estimate. I knew there would be a fair amount of dust; so, before contractor came in, I closed the French doors in my living room entryway and completely sealed it off with poly and tape around the entire perimeter. I also removed the balusters and hand rail, and I left the 3 cans of dark walnut stain on the stairs. The day the contractors workers came in while I was at work, I witnessed from my nest cam one of the workers tearing the poly from the living door, stepping in and exiting before barely hanging the poly back up. When I came home I noticed that the stair treads were 5 shades lighter and of a reddish brown hue when I specifically stated dark walnut. (which looks more like coffee brown on red oak) Also the 3 cans of stain had been pile in the corner unopened and un-used. I alerted the company owner (TONY) to this and he tells that the stairs are always lighter because they have to hand sand and the stain doesn't absorb in the wood as well and that the stair are white and not red oak. I wait until the poly has dried and I go upstairs to check the color which is exactly the same as the stairs. I called the Company owner the next morning and explained the situation and he basically says I don't know what I'm talking about and that the stain is dark walnut. By the way, the owner had not been there since the day of the estimate. So, I tell him after much argument, over the phone that they need to come back and re-sand the floor and apply what I had originally asked for. I then take a spare plank left over from the original floor and sand and stain it to show the owner the obvious difference. I had just so happened to walk in the living for the first time that same night and I witnessed a heavy amount of sawdust all over the floors, fireplace, end tables coffee tables, furniture and Levelor blinds. The dust was so thick on some surfaces that when I wiped my hand over them I had a thick film of sawdust on my entire hand. But I still wait till morning to contact the owner due to the hour. I texted the owner the next morning "Morning I hope you're coming back with your guys there are some things I need to show you and talk about before they come back in here. He responds, My guy coming back today to resand. Leave the color there they will use that today. Call me if any question. I'm bz this morning." At this point, I'm absolutely furious that he had no intention of coming back after I had already told him that his guys finished my floors with a completely different color. I send pics of all the damage to the living room, the stair treads that haven't even been completely finished, and of the contrast ,which absolutely night and day, of the plank I finished next to the floors that they finished. He then says that he'll come later in the day after they finish. My response is NO!! absolutely not and I tell him that before his guys set foot in my house he needs to come down and talk with me. So, he agrees to the following day. Then I tell him there is absolutely no way that I'm paying him the full 1,155 for a damaged $8,000 living room set, a entire upstairs that is the wrong color, stairs treads which had been completely unfinished with stain that have already been polyed(which tells me that they intended to leave them that way even If they had used the right color) and furthermore, I now have to pay someone to clean all the dust everywhere. Dust so thick upstairs, in the hallway, in my living room and even in my dining(which I had not previously mentioned) that they had taped my nest smoke detector and taken down ALL my upstairs smoke detectors and tossed them in the bathroom. Mind you I now have to take time off work to Babysit workers whom he calls professionals. ON top of all this, When say I will not pay full price, he tells me that he will not send his guys or come back if I do not pay full price because they had already done the floors. (The wrong color which looks more honey stain) SO I have completely washed my hands of this company and I hope that anyone interested in getting there floors refinished LOOKS ELSWHERE or USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!! The work is nothing short of horrendous and the company owners personal skill are severely lacking. read more

Great job. They installed a new white oak floor in my sunroom. Restored 3 bedroom hardwood floors, and stairs to their original glory. Very reasonable prices. I had to move out for 2 days. However, I did not realize they would leave the ripped up old carpet, plus 2 bags of very heavy sawdust outside at the trash area. Since I am a senior, there was no way I could lift them. Suggest you inquire about this as I was surprised when I arrived home. read more

I rarely ever write bad reviews. This company is terrible and unresponsive, do NOT use. I spent 7k with Alpha Floor working with Quinn. The work was to sand the floors of my new house after asbestos was removed. I had two set of stairs rebuilt by Alpha Floor as part of this. The stairs are poorly built and they all squeak after just 2 months - not little squeeks - big loud squeeks on all of them. I reached out to Quinn several weeks ago who ensured me they would be fixed. He subcontracted out the work but took my money. 4 texts, calls and a month has gone by and he is consistently ignoring me. If you want quality work done and a company that stands by what they do - do not be lured in by the low price. Find someone who will guarantee what you live with and not IGNORE you after taking your money. read more

They failed to inform me that the amount would be different from previously, who gets those types of increasements. They advised me well on timing and scheduling and how to coordinate with the other projects I was doing with the house. (I was gut rehabbing a rental property and acting as general contractor myself for the first time). Their men showed up exactly as scheduled and did their work quickly and efficiently. Leo was extremely responsive when I called with questions. He came regularly while the work was being done to check on it. His prices were very reasonable and you select what you want or what you don't want (we ended up opting out only on the stairs, which looked like they had been recently done). You can also select the finish: e.g., matte, gloss, semi-gloss, etc. Then his team came to do the job (floor sanding) and made sure to remove the dust / sawdust / wood dust and then 2 coats of polyurethane (and made sure to air the place out). We called Quinn for an estimate to refinish two rooms in our house. He arrived promptly and furnished what I think is a very reasonable price for the job. We arranged for the work to be done, and his two colleagues arrived as promised on the appointed day, staged their equipment, and used plastic sheeting to thoroughly seal off cabinets and counters as needed. They then set to work and, within the space of about three hours, had sanded the two floors, cleaned both spaces, and applied the first coat of polyurethane. They arrived the next morning - again as promised - buffed both floors to remove any roughness in the initial coat, thoroughly removed the residue, and applied the second and final coat of varnish. The workmen were polite, professional, and informative. The floors are beautiful. I would not hesitate to recommend Quinn and his intrepid staff to anyone. read more

I called Quinn, left a message, he called me back the same day and came out to give me an estimate two days later. During the estimate he took a quick walk around, made a suggestion for patching some old heat registers, pointed out a piece of wood that had come loose on our stairs and placed it on a window sill to make sure he remembered to repair it and then gave us an itemized estimate with pricing for every single thing that would be done. He did not try to pressure us into having anything done, simply explained what each item would cost IF we chose to do it. For a large living room, large dining room, foyer, stairway, hallway and a good sized bedroom with sanding, stain, two coats of poly and the patching of the two old heat register holes he quoted only $1300.00!!! He gave us his card and the estimate sheet and told us to call if we decided to go with him, didn't try to pressure us into making an immediate decision. We called him back the next day (Friday) and he said he would be able to start on Monday. Monday morning two men arrived on time to our home, looked around and went over with us exactly what they were going to do, answering all my husband's questions about what kind of stain they used and how many coats of poly they would apply (2) and one of the men even helped me choose a stain color when I asked him for his opinion. We handed over our keys and they told us they would be finished in 3 days as Quinn had said during the estimate. It was seriously THAT easy; we didn't have to worry about it again and on the fourth day we met Quinn at our home and walked around with him to make sure we were happy with everything. He allowed us to take as much time as we needed looking over everything and when we told him we were extremely happy he commented on how well the stain matched our existing front door (the stain that his worker helped me to choose!). We gave him a check, he gave us back our keys and we had our gorgeous floors! Absolutely EVERYONE comments on how great the hardwood floors look and every single person who has come over has commented on how much they love the stain color. As new homeowners who had a ton of projects going it was SO nice to have hired a company who got things done promptly, within the timeline they originally gave us and for a reasonable price. They tried, and were nice enough, but the work was incredibly sloppy and greatly disappointing. If you want cheap and fast, these might be the guys for you. If you want a modicum of quality, then DO NOT USE these guys. We had a lot of floors completely redone. Basically, there are polyurethane drips all over the place, including on walls. There's a spot where they clearly set the can right on the floor and poly pooled all around the rim, leaving an interesting pattern. They used an off color putty to fill in gaps and edges that looks pretty awful (putty comes in multiple colors and very little effort could have matched the color better so it didn't look so awful). On top of that, they smeared the putty everywhere (not just where it actually has a function), and instead of cleaning it up, they just applied poly right over it, locking in the ugly forever. I actually had them come out and fix some of that up, and they did somewhat (sanded it off, reapplied poly, what they should have done in the first place), but they were clearly trying to get out of here as fast as possible so it wasn't a great fix either. They had also marked on the floor in pencil and applied poly over that. Poly was dripping from boards onto various parts of the stairs, and they did it so fast and sloppy that we're continuously finding "nodules" of poly that we're picking off of the floor. They also marked up some of the kitchen cabinetry when sanding the floor. Altogether this was an abysmal job and cost us a lot of time and money. read more
