Our dog was busy doing many bad behaviors such as constantly stealing and chewing on our stuff, putting his teeth on us ( not biting but puppy play), and jumping on people. All this despite us walking him several times a day and buying him many chew toys. He is about 9 months old and a big dog. This was unacceptable with our small children in the home. I'm an experienced "dog person". In my four decades + on this earth I have rarely gone a stretch of time without one or more pooches in my life. I have had purebreds, mutts, designer mutts, adult rescues and puppies. They've all had different personalities and different "issues". I have also worked with five trainers over the past couple of decades with different approaches. "Sam" from Alpha Dog Training has been, by far, the most effective approach and philosophy. I feel so fortunate to have stumbled across his website when I was searching for some foundational help with my one year old doodle. Though I am at a point in my life where I feel I can afford some of the "extra" nonessential items-- my mom's frugal brain, that is so deeply ingrained in my psyche, DID hesitate when I saw the cost of the training program (which consists of a first visit...a sort of "as long as it takes" to get down the fundamentals deal...and then a second follow-up visit occurs a couple of weeks later). Now that I have experienced both visits, I must say that the cost was worth every penny. And furthermore, it really was "essential". I mean, who wants to have an unruly dog? And no one is happy when your day to day is out of control. Having Sam in your home is a lot like having the Dog Whisperer there with one glaring exception: there is no mystical "energy" to contend with or just the repeating of a phrase that feels impossible to even fake (IE: "calm, assertive leader"). Sam actually gives you PRACTICAL methods of accomplishing this and gives plenty of relatable analogies so that you can apply them immediately. I'm a very pragmatic gal; this is important to me. In defense of Cesar Milan's show, the audience obviously does not see all the "details" of the training in a 30 minute spot with commercials. I just stopped watching the show even though I enjoy it and him because I was always left feeling like I would never accomplish what he does. Sam gave me the "tools" to have this kind of success with my dog. His approach is straight forward and his phrasing both understandable and easy to implement. I got an 8 week old golden doodle puppy and felt pulled in a million directions with potty and other training. I was ready to pull my hair out, and knew I'd need some help to get me centered on one kind of training that will help me stay focused and help me feel like I knew what I was doing. While Im still working on my nerves a bit with the overwhelming responsibility of a pup, it felt like night and day with the way my puppy and I started communicating after Sam worked with us (he showed up when she was 9ish weeks old). He taught me that structure is what she needs more than affection and all-day focus/coddling/attention, and how to effectively communicate with her without being mean. Ranger was pretty skittish and fearful (especially when it came to the leash) he didn't want to walk for anything and it was starting to become a burden. Sam called me back and emailed me. Our pommix rescue had become very protective of us and basically ruled our house so whenever we'd all go for a walk would bark at everything and if family came by for a visit she would just bark nonstop, needless to say it was embarrassing. We have a 4 month old Weimaraner who had a lot of puppy energy and bad puppy behaviors. We struggled with him not listening to commands like sit, stay, down, etc., jumping excessively, and trying to walk him on a leash was HORRIBLE. We have had puppies before, but this sweet pup was testing our patience so we got in touch with Sam. After one training our pup actually listens! It has been one week and he is great with commands and can even hold sit and down for periods of time and the jumping has become less and less. Also, walking him now is a dream and my husband and I can enjoy walking our pup with little correction needed. However, keep in mind you do have to make sure you are willing to keep up the lessons yourself that Sam teaches you during the training. We make sure to practice with our pup constantly everything that Sam taught us, as Sam will provide you the tools but it's up to you to really instill them in your dog. One more thing to note that I loved was that Sam makes it a point to explain we don't want to lose the puppy's personality and we are not trying to create a stepford dog. That was huge to me and very important as we love our dogs personality and wanted to make sure that didn't change, which it definitely has not. :) I can't say enough great things about Sam's training and the techniques he uses. Our bulldoxer Sofie was a good dog but we had some thing we wanted to work on: walking on a leash, helping her anxiety, jumping and listening every time.
